i am in love with the miata. the entire "i can have fun driving without burning fuel, spending as much as a small house and looking pretentious". it seems like the perfect car for someone like me.

+ImElkay its not. There is no steering feel. Peddles are placed too far to the right and that touchscreen is low-res. The seats are nothing special but not bad. Would question their longevity.

+LiveToRide it would then probably be $45-50k and the MIATA isn't really about power. To each his own but I feel like a lot of people would be pissed if they did give it that much....

what i was thinking is why didn't they just throw a turbo model out there similiar to the speed 3. I love the look of miatas but hate the small amount of horse power. my motorcycle has 155 horse power where the miata has only 167. I guess it's just i am so accustomed to the speed and acceleration of a super-sport motorcycles

As a daily driver: MX5s have steering problems when approaching the owner's work place. The wheels repeatedly avoid those parking lot aprons, causing many drivers to have to circle the city (to confuse the car) and then try again. Also, what you discovered with the washer fluid's delayed entry into your face was a result of the water tension factor, also known as WTF.

+Engineering Explained No, Thank you. Your reviews are great. And that is coming from a performance engineer who works for one of the 3 big OEMs in the US. It is very refreshing to watch a review from someone who fundamentally knows that they are talking about - instead of overwhelming you with metaphors and fluff. Thanks.

  • @EngineeringExplained

+MrZz108 I appreciate hearing that! I worked in a metaphor this time - appealed to the masses, got the hook, then force fed engineering insight. If the performance cars of your OEM aren't on my channel, shoot a good word in for me. ;) Chances are I've spoken with the PR folks there, and often based on my location it's not always feasible, but it could always help. And congrats to you on your position! I applied to Ford when I graduated from college, but they never replied in any fashion. It's a tough world to get involved in, well done!

I'm an an engineer and I am really amazed with Mazda cars: they are not the best cars in absolute terms maybe, but of you look at these cars from an engineering point of view you will notice how the come up with many trade offs giving you a reliable, fun to drive, efficient (!) well thought and practical end even well made car ( specially speaking about new mazda 2 ,3 6 and so on). Well done Mazda!

It's crazy. Both you and 2theredline do such an amazing job at reviewing cars compared to official sites like Edmunds or KBB. Like, I don't click on a car review to hear a voiceover of some guy reading stupid facts off a window sticker with some exterior car shots spliced in the background. When I watch a car review, I want to see somebody IN the driver's seat, taking it out on the road and discussing their thoughts and impressions on the vehicle. I want to hear about the steering feel/responsiveness, the feedback from the road, the responsiveness from the pedals, and just overall how the car performs and responds in everyday driving situations, not to hear about things I could find out from a quick Google search. I look forward to watching your reviews as I always feel like an expert on the car after I've finished watching it. Keep up the great work.

    1. Where I live it rains consistently nine months out of the year. 2. It'd be a daily but I have no significant other, kids or the like. 3. The most this thing would need to haul would be the occasional Costco load; but I only buy for myself so it's fairly light. 4. I live in a secluded, hilly area, twisty roads and undulating road surfaces (kinda like they just paved right over mother nature). I'm torn between this and the BRZ. I've dealt with Subaru before; amazing customer service, attentive staff at the dealership without being pushy, and they display a willingness to WANT to work with you. I don't know about Mazda; I've heard good things but have no first hand experience. What should I do guys?

+Garrett Bradley Dat body roll d'o. I like them both. I'm gonna have to quit dicking around a take some test drives. The Miata isn't faster overall; it's got acceleration in spades (Ironic because this is a club). The BRZ has more top end. Wheelbase, weight, and transference of mass (pitch/roll) have more to do with handling than most V8-tards would like to admit; outside of highway travel I don't have anywhere in my immediate vicinity I can go like a bat outta hell in a straight line. Thus my quandary. The biggest issue I have with the new MX-5 is current lack of aftermarket goodies (outside of lowering options and wheels); I'm sure SEMA will rectify that though.

+Edster The Man I think the biggest reason I'm dragging my feet it; I live in northern Oregon. In winter, it's wet, nasty, windy, biting and balls friggin cold. I need to be convinced that a convertible (pervertable) would work out okay, lol. there's no denying they styling (of the ND anyways) is gorgeous. There's another thing. I'm 5'8" a little over two hundred lbs (closer to 210). I've a 30" inseam, 42" waist and 40" chest (I'm flat and wide, lol). The nearest Mazda dealer is a 40 minute drive away. I can't just go see if I fit; as much as I'd like to, lol

+REALSLOWWW Because the 400HP semi has 1500ft/lbs of torque or more, vs a 400HP V8 has around 400ft/lbs of torque. Unless you like slipping the clutch all the time, you need the torque to get the load moving.

  • @dustrider9306

    @dustrider9306

    8 жыл бұрын

That's the thing with peak power output numbers... See, a 200HP Engine could move 50 tons, the problem is gearing. But it would be nowhere near as convienient like with the semi. The gearbox basically divides power in Torque and logitudinal speed. Within a constant power output, the more torque you have, the less speed you get. It's only a matter of the gearing ratio. And finally, when you compare the power curves of those engines, youll probably see less power in the high-rpm-engine than in a semi - power which could deliver the acceleration force you need, even in low rpm...

Eh. 2-3 years ago people said the same thing about how game-changing the BRZ/FRS was. While it certainly lived up to that, today they're a dime a dozen on craigslist and everybody has moved on. And now a new miata with even less utility? If you're watching this and seriously consider one, wait 2 years for hype to die and buy a used one from somebody who already ate the massive depreciation (it will also be low mileage because s/he couldn't even drive it to the grocery store).

You can certainly drive it to the grocery store, I did multiple times. It has enough space for two people and a low packed weekend, but that's about it. Buying a used car is certainly a way to save money.

I think it's amazing that 25 years later Mazda has not lost the spirit of the original Miata and made it a bloated "sports car". I love the styling of this car, and though I haven't been able to drive one yet, this seems to be a phenomenal car. I would really love to pick one up as a second "fun" weekend car when the time comes that I can afford it. Mazda in general has been putting out some fantastic cars lately. Also Jason, I'm liking the new structure/editing you're doing with the videos, it makes it more interesting and looks more polished/professional. Nice work!

Your analogy about the cheap wine and chemical reaction is exactly right. I had a S2000 and a Corvette. The S2000 was less than half the price and for me was more fun to drive. The corvette was all powerful and sounded great but it was overkill. My next weekend car will be the 2017 MX5-RF.

+es3502012 Fiesta is a European car brought to America. Not American... though the brand may be. FWD is like go-kart responsive steering which can be just as fun. What I mean by that is you turn the wheel and you are going that direction instantly. On very tight roads with many turns you can easily have just as much if not more fun in a FWD. It doesn't have to drift to be fun. I don't know who/what put that in peoples heads. It's why hot-hatchbacks are so popular.

Tiny Turbo bro plz, the car was brought into America in the 70s, sure. But are you trying to tell me that a bunch of Europeans developed the current gen car? Americans puts no engineering into the car's suspension, chassis or whatever. There is just no way the Fiesta could match the Miata interms of engineering/fun. The Miata's 50/50 weight distribution provides the balance that could kill the Fiesta

Your personal style of tech info and real-world commentary is helping me to decide between a Fiesta ST3 and - perhaps surprisingly - the 1:5Lt, Sport, MX5. Not only does it weigh in at a mere 970ish Kg but here in the UK petrol is rippoffingly expensive, 60+% tax and the ST3 can be a bit thirsty if driven with some gusto, "35 mpg" imperial. Also, it's seat's can feel "over bolstered" to some. What a happy purchasing predicament.

Engineering Explained The standard Jag type F is a beautiful solid car, but I'm going for the lighter and less expensive Mazda RF. Hopefully I won't regret this new vs used Boxster. At 6'2+, I hope my experience in the soft top will bear out. The Miata has an Italian driver position, so long legs are not so much penalized as a long spine that will bring up your head height. Otherwise, sliding the seat back drops you lower. The styling comparisons here to the old Vettes, Opal Manta and Triumph Spitfire are correct. Do you think different grades of premium gas +/- 10% ethanol would have much effect on your speed trials?
