I own the CX-50 Select model with the naturally aspirated engine and I love it. As for the infotainment system, it took me about a 1/2 hour to figure it out and I use it without having to look at what I'm doing, you naturally memorize the positions and steps needed to operate a function. Mazda has a philosophy that I agree with, touch screens do not belong in cars; they force the driver to take their eyes off the road which is very dangerous. Give me old-fashioned buttons and knobs any day. So while you can turn the screen into a touch screen through Android or Apple, it's not advised. I love the car. As for reliability, that's what warranties are for. I have several neighbors who own Mazdas from several different models and years and they all love their cars and state they've had no problems with them.

They'll take an arm and a leg for literally the smallest features though. That's the only reason I don't want to give them business. It's just silly that you have to pay like $5000 or more for heated seats, and you still don't get a heated steering wheel. Also, despite having to pay for nearly every color, you still can't even get all the ones you want without upgrading the engine. They're cheap and stingy in a lot of ways and I feel like that makes it hard to take them seriously even if I like the look and the drive

Have been a Toyota/Mazda fan for years. Have had three MX5s and two CX5s over the years and loved them all. The one thing Mazda leads with in their vehicles is an incredible driving experience for those who enjoy the the feel of the road and the ride. I have had ten Toyotas which I also loved but none of them gave me the enjoyment that Mazda puts into their vehicles. I just purchased a new 2023 CX50 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. We love it. Did a 200 mile run this week on two and four lane roads and averaged 27.7 mpg. The handling was outstanding. On the curves it just sticks as I knew it would. Like riding on rails. The Turbo is so responsive when you need it. I would love to have had it in the MX5s. I for one have no problems with the infotainment system because it is second nature to me plus I am not big on touchscreens and all the nasty fingerprints all over them all the time. The interior is top notch for our taste. Clean and simple with easy to use real control buttons. The safety package on our CX50 has the whole package including the 360 camera system which rocks. The ventilated leather seats are a great addition. If you really want to compare quality go drive the others and then go drive the Mazda. You won't be disappointed.

Just bought a premium plus today. I had been researching and looking at them since they were announced. Last year my mazda dealer didn't have an inventory. I finally stopped and drove one Friday on my way home from work. It sold itself. I was gonna get a preffered plus but I decided that the couple thousand extra for more car was worth it to me. 4x Mazda owner and probably won't buy too many other brands in the future.

After 7 consecutive Hondas, I bought a CX50 last month, and have been nothing but pleased. I drove about 1000 miles in the first two weeks- both highway, and winding mountain roads in the Lake Placid, Saranac Lake region. It is FUN to drive. I didn't get the turbo because it was more than I budgeted for, but the regular 2.5 l engine is no slouch. My previous car was an Accord with the 3.5 l V6... and I do miss that acceleration, but the CX50 has so much going for it, I'm not disappointed. The negatives mentioned in the video are real, but trivial for my situation, and certainly not deal breakers. The only negative that came close to being significant was the lack of a hybrid option. The CRV hybrid and RAV4 hybrid were definitely among my potential buys, but they are remarkably hard to get at this time. Since my Accord only got 16 mpg city (it did manage 26 on the highway) the Mazda is still a big step in the right direction. I actually like the interior 90's vibe that was described in the video. It may be because I too am "vintage" but the look is simple and clean, but still feels very upscale. The infotainment took a little getting used to, but I still found it intuitive to use. Certainly better than Honda's. I've defaulted to using Android Auto exclusively, so the lack of touch screen is irrelevant. And I have gotten to like the dial control, which is fairly reminiscent to a joy stick. All in all, after a month of ownership, I can say I have absolutely no regrets about buying my CX50.

I agreed w everything you said up until the interior. That is one of things I love. I hate the huge screens and excessive amount of buttons on the new cars these days. The interior in the CX50 is timeless to me. Sleek and clean looking. Not dated at all. All the other newer vehicles look cheesy and cheap inside like the Rav4 imo. And the display was easy for me to connect w and operate. I actually prefer the dial bc it's right where my hand rests and there's no fingerprints on the screen. To each their own I guess but everything that makes the Mazda models different than their competitors is everything that I love!

The CX5 has been close to the top on many top reliability lists for years now, mainly the 2.5 normally aspirated engine being refined over the years, and the Mazda 6speed transmission still being used over other manufacturers 8,9,10 speed autos and also no CVT transmission issues by Mazda.

I own a CX-50. I selected it over RAV4, CR-V, and European option. My wife has an Audi Q5. I prefer the handling of my CX-50, slightly, but that should help calibrate the standard. My vehicle is gun metal metallic with black wheels, and is beautiful. (My friends can't believe I am driving something this elegant.) Fit and finish are flawless inside and out. I have used it off road, and it is very competent. The turbo was not available, but my experience with the 189 hp naturally aspirated engine is more than satisfactory. (The Q5 now seems a bit over-powered.) The Sport setting gives me all the boost I need on demand. My mileage experience is to spec: 24 in town, 30+ on the highway. My Android phone works well with info center. The safety features and intelligent cruise control work well. So far, I love this car. I will probably drive it into the ground.

Great comments! When you say you've had it off road, what does that mean? I'm seriously considering the CX-50 but am used to Tundras and 4Runners where I can cruise down pothole and washboard ridden gravel roads without having to slow down and baby the vehicle, and can do the odd rough trail down to a good fishing spot on a creek. Would you say the CX-50 would be a competent choice?

The rear diff on the CX-50 is really not a hard core off road diff compared to 4 run or tundra. I have a 2003 4.7 tundra and an audi A5 prem plus audi. This vehicle is set up a lot like my audi and has similar driving character...audi being a bit more refined with a more cushy ride. I drove the CX-50 prem plus turbo. Turbos are long distance vehicles. They do not like short drives...they need to warm up!!! Take it from a 62-year old female that drives a lot. The Car Care Nut You Tube will take you underneath the CX-50.

I just got a 2024 CX-50 Select and absolutely love it. I have a Toyota Highlander, Subaru Outback and Forester so I feel like I can give a good comparison. The Highlander drives the best but it cost more and is bigger than the other cars so it probably should. The Outback and the Forester are really solid cars and in my opinion drive the best in the snow. The CX-50, again in my opinion, looks the best and drives very smooth.

As someone who absolutely loves cars, this review is spot on. I love my 12-year-old Mazda and am looking to purchase the Turbo Premium CX-50. I've owned a Porsche Cayman and agree that Mazda is the Japanese equivalent of Porsche (for engineering and driving). Toyota and Honda are toaster cars; they do the job they're designed for and do it well every time, but lack soul (in my opinion). Mazda not only has a soul but fire and ice underneath its sheet metal. I wish it'd bring back some of the fun cars of the 90s, such as the MX-3 and MX-6, the latter a truly beautiful car.

7th "negative" point is simply not correct. Post 2013, the skyactive era mazdas, have superior reliability and ratings. Most of the cars made & assembled in Japan with a robust 2.5l engine and proven 6speed tranny. CX5 and CX9 havr better reliability ratings than Rav4 and Highlander. Now, the Alabama-built generation is different. I'd expect a drop in quality compared to the Japan's built, but not a huge one considering both Mazda and Toyota are invested

My 2023 Honda HR-V Sport was much to slow and I hated the CVT. Traded for a 2021 Toyota Venza XLE hybrid. eliminated the CVT, but gained electric motors. It was Quiet, & very efficient, & great build quality, but driving was dull, not at all inspiring. Not great for cold climates & very dark interior & strange noise of the hybrid system. Traded for a new 2024 Subaru AWD Crosstrek Limited. Nice, fairly economical and the best AWD on the planet. 3 things I hated. The linear-tronic CVT transmission was strange. Worse is the huge CENTER touch screen, that is full of finger prints and requires finding the proper screen to turn on the A/C and turn off the auto engine stop start feature . I get it, younger gen Z want everything to wok like a smart phone. Annoying as heck having to use a touch screen to turn on the A/C after hunting for it. I then visited my daughter in Northern California. I rented a 2023 CX-50 preferred. Wow!, simple knobs to control heat and A/C . No auto start stop.& an amazing 6 speed automatic. No CVT ! Even naturally aspirated 2.5 had enough power and torque to easily drive up to Lake Tahoe. Coming back down from Lake Tahoe it proved this is a drivers car and much quieter than my new Subaru Crosstrek. On May 14th I traded my new Subaru Crosstrek Limited for a CX-50 preferred. I too was confused with Mazdas CX-models & honestly, Mazda was not even on my potential list. I drove 500 miles one way to purchase this Mazda CX-50. Build quality is better than the Venza, Quietness is unsurpassed. The a/c and environmental controls are simple knobs that work. And wow.... does it handle like a sports car! A real drivers suv, that proved much superior than the 2023 Honda HR-V, the 2021 Toyota Venza hybrid or my new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. I found a keeper, a real gem hiding right in front of me in a car company I never considered. And NO, I did not take a beating on my trade in. I really had to call numerous dealerships until I found one that did not BS me. Don't change Mazda, because all manufacturers have given into touch screen marketing, you don't have to.

Great review on this CX50, and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have been driving an Alfa Romeo Giulia for the past 5 years and it's my favourite sedan to date, so I was thinking of trading it in on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio for its convenience. One day I drove by our local Mazda dealer and happen to come across a CX50 on the lot and it peaked my interest. I then went online and saw your review. As an engineer and knowing your vehicles, do you believe I would be just as happy opting for the CX50 Premium Plus Turbo ? I kind of like the looks of the CX50 over the Stelvio and the CX50 turbo can run on regular fuel as well.

David, Thank you so much for releasing this very informative video about the Mazda CX-50. I have an interesting question directed specifically towards the design and engineering of the Mazda 2.5 L Turbo engine. As you are aware, the Toyota 2.4 L Turbo engine (sorry, it’s the closest engine that I could think of in a comparison) is designed around their “D-4S” technology whereas in addition to the DPI, it’s supplemented with a PFI system to address a condition where the Intake valves would eventually build up a carbon-like residue, over time, possibly creating drivability issues. What steps has the Mazda engineers taken to address this issue which is so prevalent on Direct Injected Engines. Thank you.

drove cx-50 for 1 week as rental car and absolutely fell in love with it. feels amazing to drive. i actually love the interior as well as the size & placement of the screen. i hate having a big tablet in my face! mazda made it elegant. currently looking to buy one. i just wish fuel economy was better, and i didn't like the awkward door handle (lack thereof) when trying to close the door. other than that i love it and can't wait to buy!

I've test driven it, by far less oversteer than the 22 Rav 4 Trd off road. Ride is hard though, and the seats are also very hard. Difficult to see it as a compact, it's both wider and longer than the Rav 4 which has increased in size with its current gen. The Mazda center console infotainment dial is something you greatly miss when driving other brands that don't have it. A larger screen a bit closer to the driver would be appreciated although the ability to touch it is a bit redundant given the dial accessibility. Exterior rear tail light display only illuminates with one of the two light bezels per side when head lights are on.......unless you buy the top of the line turbo.....then all four two on each side will illuminate. All lighting is LED and bright interior lighting. The Rav 4 finally has LED interior lighting but appears to be less bright than CX50. It's a bit give and take for both.

The infotainment is perfect. Not everything needs to be a touch screen. In fact if you look at the design philosophy, it really is anti tablet style. Only reason it supports a touch screen is because Apple car play and android auto require it. Once you get that through your head, everything is intuitive. I love the separate volume knob. In fact the tactile nature of all the controls is great. Is there a learning curve? Sure, but there is with all cars if you are new to the brand.

Just bought the 2.5 turbo premium version. For the money nothing else comes close in overall value. Driving characteristics are exactly what i would expect from Mazda. Luxury surpasses my expectation of a manufactures first foray into that market. Technology delivery falls short among seasoned luxury brands but is a great beginning. I believe that consumer and dealer feedback will elevate this brand well past the mediocre offerings presented by the large box brands. Mazda has delivered yet another vehicle that stretches beyond their small market reach. I look forward to seeing what's next!!! High horsepower sports car maybe..................

David, Wouldn't the "delightful driving character" be aided by an independent rear suspension as seen on the CX-5 and Miata? Like the Mazda 3 and CX-30, this designed-for-North America CX-50 uses a rather retrograde and cheap torsion beam . 🤨In regard to a hybrid offering, Toyota is coming to the rescue by supplying Hybrid powertrains soon. Of course, some might ask how Toyota can supply Hybrid components to Mazda when they have a huge backlog of orders for their own Hybrids. 🤔🤔🤔 Finally, if you are visiting Mazda's plant in Hiroshima, please say hello to the folks who built my 1988 Mercury Tracer. It was the 'Antique Gold' 2 door with no power steering or brakes, a 4 on the floor transmission and IRS!! I am sure they still fondly remember the day they made it 😉😉😉😉

Hi David, although I like your interesting points. I agree with the hybrid models will come with Toyota borrowed designs. As for the Entertainment system. I love the dial because I don't use Android auto nor I like using the computer functionality of my cellphone. I also have 900 mp3 songs to scroll through. I won't give up the scroll wheel. Also driving on very bumpy roads in my city it's dangerous to fiddle with the touch screen. Hope Mazda listen to fans like me and keep up with the designs. My only real complain is the 2017 to 2022 CX 5 seats are too hard. If they could make it supportive like more bucket style and a bit softer. Thicker steering wheel also much appreciated. And lastly a bigger and faster screen , that would make it perfect.

We're a Mazda family and have been since the 80's. I agree with everything you since especially the Infotainment; I actually like the buttons but the Infotainment is too cumbersome and not intuitive. The warning icons need to be integrated with the display so that you don't have to open your manual to find out what it is. The warning should tell you what the problem is. As for the hybrid, EV, etc. yeah I'd like to see them step it up because our next car will either be a hybrid or PHEV. We're not looking at the EV for another 10 years. I'm waiting to see their hybrid solution, because right now the mileage is amazingly poor. I agree that their model names are confusing. I would call the CX-5 the "Carbon" and the CX-50 the "Meridian." To me, it's better branding to use names that correspond to the car identities, like "Miata." I know the Miata is the little two-seater. I know the Meridian is the Mazda version of an outdoors vehicle, though that identity is not strongly reflected in the model yet. The Carbon seems to roughly fill the role of a combination of Toyota's Cross and Venza, in that it's a slightly smaller SUV for urban and highway use (at least compared to other Mazda models). I like Mazda's stitching on the interior, and I hope thay can continue to improve their hard and soft surfaces in the cabin. To me, the CX-5 has too much chrome and piano black, where I would prefer to see minimal chrome, maybe some more muted silvery metal, and possibly some cleverly textured black plastic where needed (like a faux carbon fiber). Also, I hear Mazda needs to pick up their accent lighting game. I hope they are able to hit solid home runs with the hybrids for the CX-5 and CX-50, with some new features like electrical outlets and accent lighting, in addition to vastly better mileage.

I would like a package that would add the bright trim, remove all the lower/wheel well cladding and replace it with body color, and some other interior color besides all black. The infotainment has some issues, but it would be better to be able to not have the touch part simply because of all the finger prints that occur. I would also like to see an option to delete the moonroof. It's expensive and I have no use for it. The one thing about some physical gauges is that they add some visual interest whether the vehicle be running or not. Screens are flat visually.
