Drive them back to back. Road/wind/engine noise in RAV4 is horrible. I owned 3 previous RAV4’s and was loyal Toyota owner for over 40 years. Test drove a CX5 and CX50 back to back after driving new RAV4. CX5 is soooo much better and much quieter than other 2. Interior finish and style in CX5 much better as well. Also CX5 made in Japan. That is why I bought a CX5 non turbo. Yes the commander function sucks but connect to apple car play and forget about it. Test drive and you will pick the CX5. I am now a loyal CX5 owner.

I own a 2022 rav4 hybrid and a 2022 gas AWD. Hybrid is better. Smoother. Quieter. And of course mpg. The gas AWD engine does whine. However I’d buy another dav4 hybrid before I ever by any other brand except maybe Lexus.

No comparison at all. I test drove both and Mazda CX5 felt way more solid, quieter, fun to drive, comfortable seats, luxurious feel inside. RAV4 engine was very loud on take off, it sounded as if I was in a large truck. RAV4 also looks like an appliance and interior feel is too utilitarian for my taste. Big plus for CX5 is that it’s built in Japan.

I'm on my first Mazda (2024 CX-5 Signature Turbo, top trim in the US). My last two vehicles were a 2022 BMW X3 xDrive and a 2020 Rav4 Limited. I can say this for certain...the CX-5 punches a level or two above it's class in performance and fit and finish, comparable to or better than my X3. Since Mazda doesn't have a "premium" brand like Toyota, Honda, Nissan they strive to produce driver-centric vehicles that utilize premium interior materials and dynamic capability on the road...and they do it extremely well! While the passenger and cargo room leave something to be desired for some people, it's inconsequential for me. The CX-5 leaves the Rav4 in the dust, in my opinion.

Last summer/fall I looked at both the CX-5 and the RAV4. Trim level for Trim Level you get a nicer car with the CX-5 for less money. If you spec a CX-5 and RAV4 with leather seats, AWD, and Blind Spot Monitoring the MSRP for the CX-5 is 2-3 grand less expensive. When you add the markups the Toyota dealer added (got the Mazda below asking price) the price difference was around $5,000. The Toyota has better back seat space and cargo space and gets better gas mileage. However, I don't have children at home and I can buy a lot of gas for $5,000. Plus, the CX-5 drives way better and has less wind/road noise. So I got the CX-5. It took me about a week to master the dial/buttons for the infotainment and now I wish my other vehicle(with a touchscreen) had the dial/buttons. It is so much easier to flip screens from Google Maps to the Radio/spotify and back with the hot buttons where your hand natural sits than reaching up and touching the screen. My wife primarily drives the CX-5 and the other day I asked her if she still likes it. She said no, she LOVES it.

Exactly! Totally agree. Same conclusion I came to. I picked up a 2024 CX-5 Turbo Premium a few weeks ago. The Mazda was nicer overall inside and out, quicker, more fun to drive, less money for more features. Bose stereo is better. Less money for the same or more features and better price. Plus the 0% 60 month financing Mazda was offering in December and January and it was an easy decision. The thousands I saved can buy a lot of gas. So far I love the CX-5. Looks awesome, feels special, fun to drive. The CR-V and Rav4 are good cars and have more passenger and cargo space if you need it but the CX-5 takes it otherwise.

Loyal Toyota Lexus owner since 1999, however, i went Mazda fornthe first time. Reason is, here in Los Angeles county is pretty much impossible to get your hands on a hybrid model. Waited over 3 months for a Lexus NX 350h, gave us the runaround at Lexus Cerritos and requested 5k over msrp. Took my hard earned money to Mazda Puente Hills where they actually appreciated me as a customer and honored the Costco Auto Program rate (3k off msrp). Until Toyota catches up with availability and begins giving some sort of incentive, 0% financing or money off msrp, I'll be a Mazda owner.

I bought a lipstick and makeup enhanced RAX 4 in a 2023 Lexus NX350 in November 2022. First car I ever bought totally on impulse. I was so excited there was a car without an extra markup! 🙄. It looked pretty good, dark gray, nice black wheels etc. F Sport model. The pluses included very nice (although someone complicated) software technology. The negatives were as follows: Slowwww off the line, noisy (that was a shock), average handling, cramped seating, etc. The minute I took it home I was not happy and it took me a year to realize my mistake and dump the thing. It is too bad that Mazda did not make a new CX-7; they simply took a 9 and pulled the third row seats. I would easily take a loaded up CX-5 over the Toyota. I hope to put off ever getting a four cylinder engine car again. I would not want a PHEV but would consider any car with a regular hybrid (more reliable).

Very important review: Two heavy-hitters in the segment. I own both vehicles, albeit in previous generations and i really appreciate the simplistic quality of the Rav4. I can see why it is such high volume seller because it lives up to its identity of just being a practical and comfortable crossover. The drawback from my perspective of the CX5 is that it looks sporty and is an absolute beauty to look at whether parked or in motion but the driving dynamics just dont match up. Another deal-breaker for me with Mazdas is that replacement parts are a pain to source while Toyotas are a breeze. Once again, i disclaim that i am speaking from the standpoint of owning the previous generations.

I purchased the CX5 turbo carbon and took it back and swapped for the signature. The seats were just too firm in the carbon. I was torn between the the Rav4 hybrid and the CX5, comfort and financial concerns the Rav 4 wins easily. But I enjoy the driving experience which costs much more. Maybe that is being a bit greedy and not too environmentally conscious. The feel of quality that the Mazda offers I can appreciate. For me driving dynamics won me over. One feels like a thoroughbred while the other a nag...but in the long run I'm thinking the Rav 4 is the better tool and more comfortable to sit in. I actually preferred the carbon but couldn't deal with the seats and really would have preferred a new Mazda 6 which I traded my 2018 signature, it was almost perfection and I miss it, the only reason I traded was I needed a AWD.

In December 2023 we test drove both these cars, and the Hyundai Tucson. It was for my wife. She loved the interior of the Mazda luxury, the Toyota was not as nice but it was okay, and she disliked the Hyundai. The technology the Toyota was marginally better than the Mazda but the controller did not bother us very much, and the Tucson was the best but we know from reliability data its technology breaks frequently. Last was price. Toyota wanted $1000 over MSRP, Mazda was at MSRP, and so was Hyundai. In January we looked at remaining 2023s and then Mazda was under MSRP, Toyota was still $1000 over MSRP, and Hyundai we did not check (it was out). So we bought the Mazda for $10,000 under MSRP as we found one with 3000 miles which is like new.

A pillar - yes but I'd say not more than other modern cars. Confined - front seats feel very roomy, back row is worse and can feel confined. Gunk - yes. It will need cleaning eventually, redline the engine regularly to slow the buildup down. Some say gasoline additives may help too, not sure. Cylinder deactivation AFAIK is not a problem, unlike with many other manufacturers. Haven't found complains about using oil (I researched the NA engine, not sure about turbo). Yes, it handles so much better than most other CUVs that I can't tolerate other brands now and I never realized I even cared about stuff like "fun to drive".

Looked into CX-5, Tucson, RAV4 and finally bought the RAV4. My main concern is reliability. CX-5 uses GDI and GDI is known for carbon buildup, especially with turbo, a big no no for long term reliability. Tucson's 2.5L NA engine has multi port injection but just on paper it is infer to RAV4's engine. Plus Hyundai's track record is quite scary. People complained about RAV4 being noise. What noise? To me it is already a night and day difference over my old 2006 Saturn Vue V6. My new RAV4 has the 10.5" infotainment upgrade. I just love the RAV4's bigger screen over CX-5's narrowed screen format.

  • @mikerabkin6395

    @mikerabkin6395

    3 ай бұрын

Do you have any hard evidence to back up that GDI is unreliable, at least in the Mazda CX-5? I ask because Mazda as a brand, but the CX-5 as well, get high marks for reliability in consumer reports magazine, which is based on surveying actual owners. The CX-5 is in its 8th model year, so they've had time to get all the bugs out and improve on it over time. So I think we'd know if it was a problem by now, as this is probably the safest time to buy it given the facts above. And saying that your new RAV4 is quieter than your 2006 Saturn Vue isn't saying anything, as that's an ancient vehicle, so anything modern is going to be quieter than anything that old no matter what brands were talking about. You need to compare a new RAV4 to a new Mazda CX-5 or similar vehicle for it to be relevant. That's what the reviewer was doing here, and he's even an owner of 2 RAV4s and still said the Mazda CX-5 was quieter.

The CX-5 drives like a BMW, has an interior like an Audi, has a wonderful and smartly engineered engine and especially in the Select trim is an absolute steal at less than 30k USD. Unless you´re into hybrid tech, there´s not even a competition here.

It really depends on what you need. For instance in Europe you have to take into account that because of the dynamic regulations it will be harder and harder to resale it and also the fear of the taxes on a "non green" alternative is high.I love Mazda as Iove Toyota and Honda because they are the only companies that are trustable as they always have been.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. The CX-5 you could probably get a little under msrp. Not so sure about the RAV 4. You'd probably be lucky to get at msrp. Both engines and transmissions are bulletproof. The CX-5 is funner to daily drive. Even funner with a turbo, but then you could be sacrificing reliability.

Missing the icons as the car keeps moving and so does your outflung arm pointing to tiny symbols, your eyes off the road for half a minute. Touchscreens in cars suck. The infotainment system in the CX-5 is a no go for me. It already feels dated. I keep my cars for at least 10 years and in 2034 the non-touch screen is going to feel ancient. I would hav rather just had no screen at all and just plugged my phone into the USB as I do now in my 2011 RAV4. The current RAV4 is just boring and dated as well. I’m going to wait a year or two and see if either of these get updates. You can’t beat Japanese build quality so this is very frustrating for me.
