likely they were born too far apart not to forget; can the parents provide prey for two? I know she is behaving as she would with any young but rivalry on these nests is serious.

Jane, In this case it doesn't matter how much feed is brought. The chicks' genes are programmed to kill their siblings. We were lucky not to see a fight. This is called cainism. It also happens to golden eagles, black eagles and greater spotted eagles. In only 5% the second chick survive.

liznm wow! I didn’t realize really all of them...! but then I’ve seen it before. on the WTSE nest. also at GS Bluff the GH owl got both offspring this year. just nature though.

That is on purpose. The 2nd egg is smaller. all power is given to the first egg and the first chick. A second chick is only if the first egg is not fertilized.
