Maytag Maxima Steam XL

********************************************************
* UPDATE: D O N O T U S E T H E M E T H O D *
* S H O W N I N T H IS V I D E O *
* An easier method is possible !!! *
********************************************************
I had to clean the catch again. Following suggestion of one commenter
I tilted the machine back over center. Put a large brick under the machine so it
does not fall and crush your head like a watermelon.
The coin catch housing is
attached to the inside floor with 3 rubber mounts 2 black
and one red. There is a 1' x 2' panel with 2 hex screws and 2 white plastic
nubs. Remove the two screws and slide the panel from under the white plastic
nubs. There are two electric harness clips you want to release from the panel.
You will now have a full view to the coin catcher assembly. With pliers unclamp the black
flex hose to the catcher. Then using pliers, screw driver, and gristle, pop the rubber shock
mount feet from their slots in the machine floor board.
The entire catcher assembly will swing fully into view allowing you to unscrew the large
nylon coin catcher and clean its contents.
This video still offers a good view of what you are trying to access.
** THIS IS FOR MODEL MHW6000AWO **
** Please read public comments below to see if your model has an easier access method **
When your Maytag washer stops, won't drain, displays E01 or F09 errors, has water in the tub... Clean out the coin trap.
Unfortunately, the one thing that should be easily accessible requires removing several panels.

    If anyone is wondering, this guide works on the Maxima X Steam as well. Also, Sam Fusioncell made a point that you can just remove the 4 bottom screws, making the front loose enough (about 3-4” of room) to unscrew the filter, clean it out with a shop vac, and put it all back, using a lot less time. It took me about 20 minutes with the above method, and about 2 hours with the video’s method. The video is the proper way, but only doing the first step is much easier, while accomplishing the same thing. Hope this helped somebody!

    Thanks for presenting the proper way with an organized video... however, here is another way I found much easier to clean the drain. I just took the bottom 4 screws out... the bottom became loose enough to open 3 inches without any force... just enough to get my hand inside to unscrew the drain. Also with enough space to put the shop vac in the opening. No lifting/tilting required. I took the drain filter to the kitchen sink and cleaned it thoroughly with the rubber O'ring. Done in 10 minutes. Thanks.

    +100 - I tilted it back and then took off the bottom 4 screws. It’s a tight fit, but hey, it’s all metal. Used a shop vac to suck out the muck left in the drain, and there was a quite a bit! Found 15 cents along the way! I think tilting it back keeps the drips down. Also, I wouldn’t want to EVER have to reinstall the rubber gasket. I did it once, but never again.

    I have the stackable model with dryer attached to top of washer in a cramped utility room. I will need to uninstall dryer and all connections, all washer connections, move dryer and washer to my garage, and disassemble washing machine just to access a drain clean-out. Many other models have a simple access panel for cleaning out the drain. This is like rebuilding a freaking Italian race car engine.

    Don’t follow these directions. Tip the washer up and remove the rectangle access cover from the bottom. Disconnect the black corrugated hose from the pump with a pliers. Have a bucket underneath to catch the water. Mine had about a quart of water in it. The pump is then held in place by a red rubber piece towards the front of the machine and two black rubber pieces towards the access panel opening. The pump slides out of the red rubber piece so pull the pump back and use the finger grip on the red rubber piece to hold it steady. Do not remove the red rubber piece from the bottoms of the machine. With that removed you can now push the black rubber pieces up through the hole in the metal bottom and drop the whole pump mechanism down to access the filter. The black rubber pieces remain installed to the pump. After cleaning the filter Put the black rubber pieces in place before connecting the red rubber piece. Took me 15 minutes.

    Many models, mine included do not have the rectangle access cover. It is just one solid piece until right below the controls. Obviously much more difficult to gain access. This video was helpful.

    This is the simplest method for my model MHW4200BW1, which perhaps has the same construction as yours. This is also the only access method to replace the pump/filter assembly. I detached the input and ouput hoses to thoroughly clean the filter housing as well.

    I would get out my hole saw, get hinge and a spring. Put black rubber edging on cut out and away you go. 11-2018. We just upgraded washers. Some of the new ones have a door now to access the pump sump. But the ones we bought didn’t! So if mine plugs I will have to disassemble it to get at it. I will likely add a door at that time.

    I cleaned out the trap as instructed but the error codes came back after several more loads. I then found the real problem-the internal hose exiting the trap (going to an external drain) had a lot of built up residue. I detached the hose and for fifteen minutes I ran a blunt plastic covered wire back and forth through the hose and I ran a lot of high pressure hot water through it. Tons of garbage/mold came out. Runs fine now. Note, the trap end of the hose has a one-way plastic flow control flap so flush from that end; the flap prevents you from pushing water through from the other end. I also cleaned the external hose which had five years of residue coating the walls just like plaque in arteries.

    You don’t really need to detach all those things. All I did was: Unplug the washer Made sure no water Tilt the washer using a brick or whatever you can find in the house Unscrew the bottom Remove the brick Place Towels down for water spilling out the filter Clean the filter with dish soap or rinse it (I used dish soap cause it was VERY BAD) Place filter back in and put everything back together. What I found was ALOT of animal hair a dollar bill and A lot of nickels, dimes, and quarters lol.

    For the record, and for anyone else who is looking for info on this - I have what I think must be a newer and/or cheaper version of this Maxima washer, no steam (MHW5100D) and the pump is right under the center of the drum, with the coin catch facing toward the left side. I just took apart the whole front and realized that I could probably have just taken off the back panel and had the same access to the clean-out.

    Thanks for your candid review. The manual for the model that is shown has zero information on how to clean the trap leaving us hapless mortals to fend for ourselves. If you had read the header comments you might see that you are correct. Through the process of networking, friendly dialogue, and the scientific process it was discovered that one can unscrew the bottom, wrangle a bunch of supports, and access the trap, hopefully not crushing one's head under the machine. You are right and so smart. I will take this video down. We anxisouly await your video Don.

    Way easier method. Remove the rubber and spring with key and fingers. Just hook spring and gently remove. Then reach down with hand and remove the drain . Water will spill bit who cares its a laundry room and water spills in there all the time. Clean filer remove junk and hair. Put filter back in same way and replace the ring spring and your good. 5 min tops.

    Hi Steven. Thanks for the input. I am completely bumfuzzled by this machine. The washer in this video is the model MHW6000AW0 Maxima Steam XL. I am curious which model you have - maybe I have missed something. For the life of me I cannot find cleaning of the coin trap in the MHW6000 user manual and I can't find a bottom access panel. Also, on my model, the coin trap plug faces the front panel and is almost face to face with the front panel basically boxed in until the front panel is removed. I'm adding a comment in the video description to check out public comments before tearing their particular machine apart.

    Correct Steven Chance. As pointed out in another reply, simply remove the bottom access panel and pluck the black rubber mounts of the filter housing/drainage pump upwards to release pump. The pump can be pulled backwards releasing front mount from the red rubber fastener. It then drops down with easy access to filter and can be detached from its connections to input and output hoses plus electrical connections. This is how to replace the pump/filter assembly should the motor burn out. Installation is reversed. There is no need to remove the top, front, or back of the cabinet. Now mine is the Maxima X Steam model MHW 4200BW1 with pump filter facing back of front panel. Other models may be different.
