Mayim Bialik makes another ‘Jeopardy!’ snafu: ‘That was ridiculous’ | New York Post

Mayim Bialik is in hot water again following her recent hosting gig on “Jeopardy!”
The game show producers were forced to intervene during a show earlier this week when Bialik, 46, mistakenly said that a contestant didn’t win her points, when, in fact, the player did.
The clue read: “From a Latin word for ‘to clock,’ it’s the type of care given to seriously ill patients to provide comfort without curing.”
Contestant Andie Huskie then answered, “What is palliative care?” pronouncing it differently.
However, he then corrected his solution to “palliative care” pronounced correctly before time ran out.

    Not much of a mistake at all by Bialik, if any, but she made a really big gaff very recently in mutilating the pronunciation of Cannes, as did the contestants. The 'a' is short, so it's pronounced like the English 'can'. They refuse to pronounce it properly even tho they easily could bcz it's a sound that's common in English, too, except it's even shorter in French. The gross misrepresentation of French vowels in phonetic transcription by orthodoxy, which is usu. wrong anyways, is so bizarre it's surreal, but even more so, if that's possible, is most people going along with it, n knowing full well the actual pronunciation, they are truly cognitively disfunctional at best.

    This is related to my other comment. But I don’t think she did anything wrong. The judges gave him the points because he corrected himself, NOT because they thought his first pronunciation was close enough to be acceptable. That would suggest that Bialik was correct in the way she handled it. “Pa-ll-uh-tive” is not an acceptable answer, but “pall-ee-uh-tive” is.

    @@ChristmasEve777 I didn’t see anything about five seconds. But I saw was that the player can correct their mistake as long as they do it before any other judges, including the host, intervenes. This is from Jeopardy’s own website. So, I feel like this exchange is kind of in no man’s land. She didn’t exactly rule, and he also did not give the correct pronunciation. He interpreted her pause to mean that something was incorrect. He started to pronounce the word again, but we have no idea what he was going to actually say. So I think the correct out come would’ve been no points given and no points deducted.

    I’ve seen the show but I’m far from any sort of an expert. My question is this: is a person allowed to give two answers? Because according to the ruling, the reason he was able to get his score changed because the judges determined that he corrected his answer before Bialik’s response. Thus, it was not a question of whether or not the mispronunciation was close enough to be considered the correct answer; it was accepted that he changed his answer without any prompting from the house. That suggests that contestants are allowed to give two answers.

  • @Galamoth06

    @Galamoth06

    You can absolutely correct yourself if you mispronounce a response, as long as the host doesn't rule against you first. I'd say there's a clear distinction between that and outright giving more than one different answer. Although there have been several times where, due to how long it sometimes takes for Mayim to verify responses with the judges, contestants will interpret the awkward pause as her expecting a more specific answer, so they'll add unnecessary information that results in a wrong response they otherwise would have gotten right.
