The Maya invented a system of writing unlike anything before or since.

ChinOliva, this is a very concise --and unusually accurate-- introduction/explanation of the way Maya hieroglyphs work. It's hard to keep any such lesson so short! Congratulations! Best to you, Mark Van Stone, (author of "Reading the Maya Glyphs" and "2012: Science and Prophecy of the Ancient Maya")

The stacking reminds me of Hangul, the Korean writing system, which is quite clever to say the least..........

Hopefully when more cities are discovered and excavated then scholars can find the most concise way the signs were written so modern maya speakers can use it again. I've heard the signs found are closer to extreme calligraphy.

@Matsutom I've suspected that myself. The Catholic church claiming that the writings were burned could have also served to keep any future historians or archaeologists from searching for for any of the writings.

@FediTheJoker Many languages the use syllabaries, like Japanese, have words with "echo vowels". This comes from the mechanics of the writing system. E.g., every syllable is written, but not necessarily spoken.

Hey I am very curious about Mayan language..I am learning Pipil Nahuatl and the Aztec dialects look very similar to me (if not, the same)..I want to know if with Totsil, you can understand Yucatec, Tseltal, huastec as well because i saw the scrips and translations but I don't see any similarities.

Hi , NeCacaluXuxultic! I've also learned some Nahuatl in Mexico City. I've been told that Pipil is somehow not a different language but a Nahuatl dialect. Otherwise Tzotzil and Tzeltal are two different languages. There is not mutual intelligibility but they have many similarities like Italian and Portuguese or Italian. Yucatec and Tenek are more distant. They all belong to the same linguistical family though. The degree of proximity is not the same like French and Spanish, for example.
