Learn to write hieratic like an ancient Egyptian
Hieratic is an ancient Egyptian script used for writing many kinds of texts. But learning it is not always easy, for ancient and modern people alike. So can we use the ancient way to train ourselves to learn hieratic? I did some experiments on myself and let's see what happened.
And thank you all for viewing! This is my VERY FIRST video on KZread and the second video I ever created in my life. Your comments will mean a lot to me and I am looking forward to make more fun video in future.
For those viewer who knows hieratic very well and just want to know what I did, you can skip to 4:43

My uncontrollable bedtime thought today led me to think of hieratic, I turned up my ipad, youtube, just to look it up with little expectation. Thank you for having covered this up man, a girl can sleep today thanks to you. Great quality video btw.

At 0:32 Translation: Some people like the dancing dude, and are clapping for him, but one is unsure. Perhaps he should go to Thunder Dome where the sitting lady who is judging and her bodyguard with a "thumpin'" club await the performance of a lifetime. Egyptian is easy!

Haha! Pure gold! Reminds me the Teddy in Night At the Museum 2 reading hieroglyphic tablet: A man with spear, puts a bird and a sideways fish into a vase....and there's also a beetle.

Your writing is just beautiful. I've been trying to learn to read hieratic on my own and to say it's a challenge is an understatement, but I just wanted to let you know that I laughed out loud when I read your hieratic rendition of "dummies" on the book cover. That was great. You are my kind of person! Loving this video and have subscribed to make sure I don't miss anything you put out there : )

Awww Glad you like it, especially the dummy part--it took me 20 minutes to paste the hieratic onto the cover!
Thanks, I've searched so long for something informative about Hieratic, and now I've found this PDF. FINALLY

Oh dear! I hope your wrist is alright now. We all pay a price for learning a writing system. For me is the neck. For a couple of weeks I cannot nod and my arms feel numbs. Wait, you need to drill your mind in Latin too? So what do students repeat in their learning? verb forms?

Wonderful!! Well done! I copied Poe’s amazing publication on a 6.5 meter Papyrus. Thanks for your video.

Thanks Peter! I can see you are very enthusiastic about Egyptian writing, as you commented many similar video! It is great to know that you like my work!
This may be crazy, but I'd like to learn this for miniature painting; especially for thousand sons or any Egyptian themed models!
Can you give resources to study if possible. I do enjoy the topic and hope you will make more.

Hi! Thanks for watching and great to see you are interested in it. I am not professional in terms of hieratic (I am more "archaeological" than "Egyptological" in my research life). So I am also a beginner in this matter. You can start with Poe's book featured in this video. You can download it for free from sonoma-dspace.calstate.edu/handle/10211.3/144864

Could you please help me? I have been trying for months to discover how the names of goddesses Hathor, Naunet, Sekhmet and Apophis would be written in hieratic writing; to tattoo them. I would be infinitely grateful if you could tell me and help me.
@Hoisin Poison and to anyone else, Could somebody recommend a complete (meaning every hieroglyph rendered into) hieratic dictionary?

Hello, I am very impressed by your work, it looks pretty amazing! I may come up late, but do you have a reference for the pen you use in the video ?
@hoisinpoison4126
Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment. The pen I use for this video is a kind of Lamy fountain pen, call JOY. But any calligraphy fountain pen will do. Also, the best way to write is not with fountain pen, as the similar reed pen was not known to Egyptian until very late. So, if you are looking for a more authentic way to write hieratic, try small brushes.
Hieratic looks so familiar False déjà vu So Bizarre
Oh, this is wonderful. I am trying to create a character who is an expert in hieratic (which I definitely am not). You make it look so beautiful! Can you advise me? If she got her Ph.D. in the US, where would she have studied? And would she be an Egyptologist or an archeologist? I need her to be working in Egypt, but not on the dig, when a new cache is discovered. Can this work? Thank you so much for this incredible video!

Thanks and wow, what an amazing character you are shaping! However, I finished my PhD of Egyptian archaeology in England and have very limited knowledge of US unis. Well, university of Pennsylvania, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Brown and Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago are all possible schools for her. But personally I prefer Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago because as you mentioned, she needs to work in Egypt, but not a dig, so I suppose, she could be an Egyptologist who can read both hieroglyph and hieratic, and now participating the epigraphic expedition of the Oriental Institute which started from 1924. If you imagined her as an Egyptian archaeologist, she can also works on some site survey, which requires no dig, but need to check the ground.

Happy to help, even though I am not an expert on hieratic at all. What do you want to write for your mother's birthday? Have you written something already? What are the confusions?
Can you please tell me what my name would be in Hieratic?! And the pronunciation? My names Jason. Thank you if you can!

Hi! I am not an expert in hieratic as you can see I am still learning it by myself. But I am happy to have a look of the "hieratic abnormal" text (by abnormal are you referring to abnormal hieratic which was replaced by demotic later?) you mentioned. Would you like to send it to me?

"Hieratic" is a Greek term, right? What is the actual name that the Egyptians called it? Thank you!
wait, but if you spell fish in egypt you spell it litterly like F I S H but in hieratic, but what is the egyptian word for it if you would translate it into english? I mean like, if you had an hieratic text and you translate it with the english letters you will get something weird not an english word right? how do we translate that because thats another translation you need to do?
@idrisa7909

I think you mean transliterate. Hieratic is a logographic script that only uses consonants. This is similar to Arabic and Hebrew, which are sometimes written without some of their vowel characters at all (the dots and dashes you see around larger characters). However those both have a sign related to a phenome- hieratic has a sigh related to a phenome or to multiple phenomes, as well as a few signs that represent entire words or concepts. So when transliterating hieratic in English script you get a bunch of consonants and maybe a word, and the vowels that create a whole picture of the word are kind of informed guess work- though Coptic can give us some more idea of vowels because Coptic transitioned from the old, logographic and often not including vowels scripts, to one derived from the Greek and Demotic scripts that has a letter linked to a single phenome and has vowels as major characters.
I need a hieratic for dummies... or the writing equivalent of duolingo xD
i wonder if arabic and greek never took over egyptian would evolve something similar to japanese
How on earth do you have less subscribers than me.
Honestly, I can't see where the mistake is. Aren't they exactly the same?
