The reason people are upset is because a lot of us had a very strong emotional reaction to this episode, i think a lot of people can relate to Max's struggle with her mental health after an already pretty rough life and a very traumatic event. And Spartan and Pudgey barely seemed to register any of that because all they cared about was Billy, who is one of the sources of Max's trauma but they (and especially Spartan) don't care about that because they just hero worship Billy. One good act at the end of your life does not erase all the bad things you've done, and it doesn't invalidate the pain you've caused in others. Billy is a character to sympathize with to understand how people's environments shape them, but he's not to be hero worshipped.

  • @chrisbrooker7260
    @chrisbrooker726025 күн бұрын

No rational person expects everyone to have exactly the same views on something, but there are occasions when a reaction is so far off the mark that it’s really jarring. This episode is about Max, about depression/mental health and confronting it, about fighting your demons, about Sadie Sink’s acting, about Kate Bush, about the Duffer Brothers brilliant juxtaposing of Running Up That Hill with Max’s (literal and metaphorical) struggle to escape. (It’s also a little bit about Robert Englund) And, you completely missed all of that and focused on Billy. Now don’t get me wrong he was a really well-acted and quite engaging bad guy with a pretty good partial redemption. But he was meant to be a bad guy, and is not the focus of the show - aside from his role in Max’s struggle. This episode meant a lot to a lot of people because of its main themes and I think you’ve really missed the mark and disappointed many here. It also makes me feel less inclined to watch future reactions given what’s going to happen…. Also, to underplay the threat of Vecna, a brilliant villain, is really odd. And Spartan needs to get over this simping for every alpha male or ‘warrior’ type, and total discounting of characters who don’t conform to that - Max, Robyn, Nancy, Bob etc

As the survivor of an abuser, Billy is not a decent human. The cycle of abuse generally does continue but the narcissistic evil ones continue the cycle of abusing others, those of us who have half decent hearts continue to abuse ourselves in self sabotage which takes many forms. What Max had was yearning. And yes, she probably was relieved when Billy died and she was carrying guilt. It messes with your head when you wish death upon another human in order to stop being abused. You worry you are as bad as they are if that's the intrusive thought that entered your head. This is the story of Max's strength and pain, not Billys perceived personality transplant.

Totally agree. It's hard watching Billy experience abuse from his father and it's tragic, but he was so scary in season 2 and he doesn't get a pass because of his trauma. I've experienced an older sibling like him and know how terrifying they are, especially when alone with them. So yeah, Max definitely would have felt relieved when he died and it's completely valid. Also, Vecna took his time with all his victims. Vecna only kills people when they choose to give into him. Max runs away so Vecna doesn't chase her.

I think Vecna is a great representation of things like depression, anxiety, shame, su*cidal feelings/ideation, etc. I was struggling with some of those very badly when this episode came out, I remember sobbing afterwards because I identify so much with Max (her family background is even kind of like mine) and just feeling so much. After that, for a while, when all that bullshit would start welling up I would remember Max fighting back, grabbing Vecna and ripping off a part of him, escaping back to her friends, I'd imagine I was her and I was fighting it off and making it back to the light. It helped a lot. I haven't felt the need to do that in a good while thankfully, but this episode still gets to me every time

Max completely stole the show this season, hands down no questions asked, and nobody even came close to being as good as she was. One thing that upsets me about your reaction is when we get to Max’s best scene you guys just make it all about Billy when it is not. This scene was not only about Max defeating Vecna but it was also a metaphor for depression. This scene was just so powerful and you guys blew right past it. This scene was about MAX and not Billy I understand that you guys might like Billy for saving El, but that was only one scene, and just seconds before he died. If El had never brought back those memories to Billy he would have had her killed. And I’m sorry, but in my opinion, Billy will never be close to any of the other characters. 99% of the show he was rude, abusive, racist and controlling, and idk why you guys like him so much. He was always rude to Max, Steve, and Lucas and just because of one scene now he is one of the best characters? i think not. I understand his dad was the same to him, but that doesn’t mean you should be like that towards other people. I will never feel the way you guys feel about Billy. And I really love you guys and you have great reactions, but these are just my thoughts on this

I think the real problem that we're (the viewers of S and P) is that they (mainly Spartan specifically) do not like Max enough to care about what really happens to her and her arc. For example: Me personally, if Billy had had an emotional scene identical to this one where he remembered his happy memories and escaped death using his favorite song, I wouldn't really care much what happened to him. I wouldn't be on the edge of seat praying he survives like I was for Max. You've gotta care about Max enough to truly enjoy and connect with this scene. And obviously everyone is entitled to their own personal true reaction and can react how they want to because it's their reaction. We can't force them to care about Max much as we did. Obviously. But yeah the Billy obsession is getting a little out of hand considering this really wasn't even about him. It's almost like you guys are hindering yourselves from enjoying season 4 by not letting Billy go.

Everyone in the comments here acknowledges and sympathizes with the fact he was abused growing up - but it does not excuse his own abusive actions, the bulk of which were targeted at Max. The way ya’ll sweep his problematic behaviour under the rug because of one good, heroic thing he did is worrying. Just because someone has a terrible childhood does not excuse that person for being a bully or abuser . He has been shown as a terrible person for 99% of the show; a few scenes of him being good cannot make someone love him this much. El had a worse childhood than Billy, far worse; she had every reason to be a villain, but she chose to be good. Heroes that deserve such love, like Harry Potter ,peter parker ,Bruce banner, and Jon Snow all had worse childhoods, but they all chose to be good. That's what makes them heroes. Surely you can like some characters better after they have their redemption, like Theon Greyjoy. However, Billy's redemption was not shown to us for long enough to like him that much. I agree he would have been a great addition to season 4, but the story is still going strong. Therefore, I think this season does not lack Billy's presence that much. But still, he is a very interesting character played by one of the best actors in the series, though.

People on the comments saying that there's nothing wrong in liking a villain and that we shouldn't judge if Billy is their favorite character... okay but the problem is that they don't see him as a villain, they see him as a HERO!!!??? And the worst part is that their love for him is really affecting their vision to the whole show and they aren't even trying to understand other character's development. Also, Spartan has a visible inclination towards male characters with toxic masculine personality. That's why Dustin and Steve aren't his favorite characters anymore. And what will be his opinion about Will in further episodes? I can already imagine.

"The problem is". Jesus if you can't watch their reaction without snapping at them, then don't watch their reactions at all. Not everybody interprets things like you do. The world is diverse in viewpoints. We used to celebrate that once, now people can't tolerate it, and so many of them are in the ST fanbase. Billy was an asshole who, in the end, chose the ultimate heroic act. He sacrificed himself to save an innocent stranger. If so many ST fans could read between the lines they would see why. He did it because Eleven freed him, not just from the mind flayer, but from the mental prison he was in because of his father. The man who controlled his life and policed everything, including his emotions. Eleven was probably the only person to show him legitimate compassion since his mother left. To show him that it is not wrong to miss her and to grieve over her decision to leave him. The moment that changed his life for the worse, and his father, the original monster, metaphorically possessed him. He couldn't show empathy, he couldn't be nice to anybody or else he's some "fa**ot" like his father said. Even when Eleven asked Billy to show her what happened, he showed her his mother, the abuse she suffered, his failed attempts to protect her because he was too small to resist his father, etc. He showed that to her along with the mind flayer. Then she figured it out, she knew how to bring him back. She knew what would give him the power to resist the influence of the mind flayer and return to before all of this happened, when he was loved and cared for, when he wasn't fucking miserable. She freed him, and in return he did what he couldn't do for his mother, he used his strength to protect Eleven, the innocent, from the monster. He finally fought back and won, only it cost him his life. He stayed alive just long enough to tell max he was sorry. That doesn't erase anything he did in the past of course, but not all characters can have a perfect redemption arc. The past can't be changed, you can't do anything but decide in the moment. In the end he got it right and did something that not only saved Eleven but is likely to have far reaching consequences for everyone. I appreciate how the wrapped it up for Billy, and gave his shitty personality and actions some context that can be understood. And I felt for Max in S4, because she is struggling with the loss and the fact that while they all stood there and looked in, he took on the mind flayer, one on one, and died. The guilt that she probably never even knew he was capable of that. Even the "I'm sorry" makes it so much more complicated for her. She only truly met Billy right before he died. Her journey in s4 requires that. It's the entire basis of Vecna targeting her.

It's unfortunate that this episode didn't impact you guys the way it seemingly did the world collectively. To anyone who's experienced depression and thoughts like, "i wish i wasn't alive" it was incredibly emotional. And so well written. Beyond being a monster from another dimension, Vecna is a whole metaphor for the kind of depression that leads to suicidal ideation. "It's time to end your suffering." The way he tells Max that she wanted to join Billy. He (your thoughts/mind in depression) takes your trauma/guilt and makes it worse to the point that you contemplate suicide. The writing, the high stakes of it being Max, the actress's acting, the music... It all came together to give us one of the most beautiful, meaningful, and emotional scenes/stories this show has delivered. For that alone, I'll love this show forever.

Max's whole arc over the first 4 episodes is a story of trauma, immense guilt, depression and suicidal thoughts. Over the first few episodes, we see her burning her friendships, embracing depressed solitute, and she seems to not care about herself, her life, anything. This is all very very real, and resonating for anybody who's experienced suicidal thoughts before. Hearing her monologue of her letter to Billy explains the self-blame and guilt she has put on herself, and her inability to share the truth with anybody else. That is a hell of a lot of emotion and turmoil for a child to deal with on their own. Then, in the moment of the Vecna attack, re-living her memories of friendsip and love, and she realises she doesn't truly want to die. She decides to FIGHT. Not just Vecna, but fight for her life. People who don't understand this, are actually lucky. It means they probably don't resonate with being in that dark place, and that's a lovely thing, but for those of us who have, this episode absolutely hits.

Prior to being subjected to the mind flayer's influence he was already dangerously violent and close to a psychopathic murderer himself. You can point out his father's abuse, which explains most of his behaviour, but plenty of people, me included, live through abuse and fight to stay close to the light. He has reasons, not excuses. I think his charisma and pseudo-badassery is the true cause of you guys falling for him, and while he started to reedeem himself Max's guilt is as unfair as it is comprehensible. Nah, you misread him. He's wearing a mask because the real him is vulnerable. That if he lets his guard down, people will treat him like his parents did. So happy for you though. But what if you didnt have friends, or teachers or anyone who cared? What if your family lied and nobody who could have helped believed you because the denial was easier to believe than the truth? Would you have turned out the same? would you take any sheyet from anyone or anything at that point? I honestly doubt it.

@@TheRepublican777 I'm not denying the complexity of traumas & coping mechanisms. Diving into Billy's psyche/reasoning is inevitable and rather obvious. Most viewers get what you stated and more, and Spartan/Pudgey explained this viewpoint extensively. I can only repeat that while the reasons for his behaviour are understandable they do not constitute excuses. Beating Steve to near-death, mentally harrassing his half-sister up to clearly abusive levels, constantly attacking those he perceives as weaker... Those are traits certainly dependent on his father's cruelty. Once again, having lived and currently living through the consequences of abuse, i can relate to Billy's ordeals. I too became violent recently ; But only when actual psychosis took over. Billy is clearly not psychotic, he chooses to discharge his pain on others. Doing it consciously is a huge difference. It implies choice and accountability.

I feel the episode did a really good job in portraying Max's feelings around Billy's death. It wasn't because they had a strong and close relationship that is causing her to feel sad. Rather, it's precisely because they didn't have one. It was about the road not taken. When Billy died, he had done so whilst selflessly protecting others - a completely different side of him that Max had never seen. Which had left her wondering what else she never knew about him and whether - had life turned out differently - they could have formed a stronger sibling relationship. Unfortunately, this is something she will now never know. As such, it wasn't (mainly) about sadness over what was lost but remorse and regret over what could have been.

This is such a great episode for me specifically because of how much it progressed Max's character arc and was also imo an amazing tribute to Billy by highlighting Max's perspective of him. Their relationship was obviously pretty bad and toxic at the start but hearing Max open up through her letter of how things could have been if Billy survived truly made me emotional and I felt like the show handled all of it well

Billy was extremely racist and was physically and mentally abusing Max to an extreme degree. The fact that you act like he was some kind of angel and 'misunderstood' is very worrying tbh.

Billy did redeem himself, but besides that can we just aknowledge that he was a huge racist towards Lucas not wanting Max hang out with his kind, he nearly ran over the party with his car as well as beating up children. His story is tragic deflecting the abusive nature of his father towards Max. He was no Hero, but he did have a redemption.

I'm pretty sure it's because people expressed hate for Billy in the comments and that made them connect with him more. I don't understand the hate for Billy either - he a fascinating character, his back story gave us some empathy for him and ultimately he got a redemptive end.

@@jonasfermefors bc they hate characters who haven't done even half of the things billy did before vecna got him. He redeemed himself at his last moment but it was too late 🤷🏻‍♀️ they've liked billy since season 2 before they even showed how abusive his dad was, even after him being racist and acting agressive with max.
