Maverick Bones: POV Test drive of the 2021 Ford Escape Titanium

Come along for a POV review of the 2021 Ford Escape in Titanium trim. Can this compete at all with class leaders like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4? Is the 2.0 turbo good enough to compete in the sporty segment defined by the Mazda CX-5 Turbo and premium offerings from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes?
The Escape is completely overshadowed by the hot Bronco Sport and Bronco but its aerodynamic shape provides a sophisticated look and returns better gas mileage than its more rugged siblings. Other competitors include the new Hyundai Tucson, new Kia Sportage, and the very nice driving VW Tiguan.

16:05 Fuel Economy and Final Thoughts
Don’t overlook the lesser trims and the 3 cylinder 1.5 for a better price and the hybrid and plug in hybrid make this a great option for saving fuel.
The new Ford Maverick will also lessen demand for this Escape and with that Maverick’s crazy low price for the hybrid version, this Escape has some pretty stiff competition - from Ford’s own other choices!
This Escape is quick and comfortable, and full of the latest safety tech. Should you put it on your shopping list? Let us know your questions and comments and if you prefer real car reviews, and not marketing spin, join us here on Beyond the Test Drive.

I do have a 2020 Ford Escape SE in black for a little bit over a year. I loved using Apple Car play in it. It is my 2nd Ford Escape. My 1st one was a 2015 Ford Escape SE in silver grey. The 2015 one was so easy to drive and used. I liked the smooth drive in the 2020.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I really like the look of the Escape and even like most of the interior. People should put these on their shopping list. Especially given the wide variety of drive trains and trim level. 3 cylinder to plug in hybrid. Looking forward to driving that plug in hybrid. Of course it’s less hp then the RAV4 Prime but the price is less too. Again, thanks for watching and congrats to your wife on a great car.

It is my love for my 2012 Ford Fiesta (41-45 mpg) that has me in the process of ordering a Maverick XL hybrid.

Excellent choice with the Maverick. Love that Ford is offering in hybrid. How many miles on your Fiesta and any major issues?

The fuel economy is more than likely because of the tires. Those crappy Bridgestones they’re putting on these, for lack of a better word, just suck. Look at some reviews online about the tire. They’re not good. I over inflated, and I’m averaging about 25 combined. Also, even though they say you can run 87 octane in this, if you ready the manual, premium is actually recommended. I plan on buy new tires and will continue running premium, noticed a big difference after two tanks when switching. Motor was even idling smoother. I definitely wish there was a way to have the gauge cluster in black and red without actually being in sport mode. Great review though!

Hi Nick. Thanks for sharing your experience. I am a big fan of ford’s 2.0 turbo. I think your 25 mpg sounds pretty decent. But tires can make a difference. And agree the red gauge cluster is cool and very Audi like. Thanks again.

I think for the price it's pretty good car overall in fact it's on my short list when shopping for a car early this year but the looks didn't really work for me I think is Ford trying to make an SUV to look like a car but the outcome is a catfish.

I just bought a 2022 with the 2.0. When I switch to sport there is a noticeable difference in steering feel. The manual even says the steering is tightened in sport. I don't drive it in any other setting but sport.

Hey Shaun, thanks for watching and commenting. And congratulations on an awesome car. That is some great feedback on the steering. Maybe they changed it or maybe I was doing something wrong. Either way I think the Escape is an excellent choice in this class and no one has that 2.0 smoothness and power unless you go up to the luxury brands. Keep in touch on your ownership experience.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Yea, get your point. I have driven the 3 cylinder Escape several times and it is surprisingly not bad. At 1.5 liters it has that 0.5 liter per cylinder as the 2.0 and has an interesting and unique growl to it. Half of a V6 basically so similar harmonics.

Shape right . Color right . Size right . The problem is their badge and what they represent. Look at the mach E... I think they need a new logo and to Re brand. People want dependability not just something that is OK.. for 60k

Thanks for watching and commenting. Ford as a brand does have issues with many buyers. They have a loyal following with their F150 and Mustang. Bronco and Maverick seem to be their next great products. The MachE is very competitive in its class but that class is way overpriced right now.

I do not recommend a Ford Escape. I bought one new and had to many problems and found some major design flaws that after telling Ford did nothing to fix the from over the next 5 or 6 years. Do yourself a favour and buy Mazda, Toyota or Honda. There is more to nice looks. Reliability and great engineering should be everyone’s high priority. That engine in this video is not quiet. Lots of ticking noises at idle. Good luck if you buy one. I will never again buy Ford. Ford does not care about quality.

Hi Todd. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Yea, almost all turbo direct injected engines sound like sewing machines at idle. Please share what year Escape you purchased as quality can vary, especially in first years of production. The Japanese brands are for the most part, a no brainer, if reliability is a priority. Our goal at Beyond the Test Drive is to to focus on owner experiences so thanks again for your comment.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive 2013 Escape. 1st yr but largest complaint was doors hitting. Rear doors hitting front doors chipping paint. I reported this in Sept of 2012 (when I got mine) Ford did nothing. 2018’s we’re hitting too. Ford did absolutely nothing to fix. Robot installing doors could have been preprogrammed to install rear doors a few millimetres rearward to creat bigger gap between doors. I showed many owners why their doors were chipped. One person had 2 Escapes under warranty and got the doors repainted because of me.

@@tmic4790 thanks for that info. Yea, that was the third generation. Was never a fan of that one and the ride was really on the rough side. These 4th gens seems to be better built and pretty solid but as you point out, reliability is the dominion of the Japanese brands. I hope this 2.0 liter proves to be reliable as it is a good performing motors. Thanks again for you feedback.
