I made it last night and it turned our perfectly, I am from Guyana and there are lots of methods in making dhal puri. Found this one to be most successful.

Was to Berbice to set up a call centre. Not safe at all. Hope things got better. Instead We are in Nevis and lots of people from Guyana are working in the call centre

I tried this recipe today and this is the first time I'm making dholl puris. Honestly I was pleasantly surprised since the dholl puris turned out to be nearly perfect ! Only thing sometimes the dholl was not evenly spread out but across the borders only but this is a matter of technique. The taste was so good and texture amazing. Thank you so much for this recipe ! 😄

I'm originally from Mauritius but have worked in over 20 countries including Trinidad and Guyana- your dhal puri recipes are more sophisticated than the Mauritian version, with many tricks to soften the dough using less oil for the dough ! The buss up shuts too are better

I’m from Guyana and this is the best recipe I’ve used to make dhal puri. To add that extra kick to the dhal mixture, when boiling it, add some cloves of garlic and a pepper and you’ll tell me back. Thank you for sharing

Hi ! I've tried dholl puri a few times but it was always a failure. Came across this video and i was tempted to attempt it. Just wanna say a big merci for this detailed video ! Every step went smoothly. For the 1st time my dal wasn't soggy! The dough was so soft! Not gonna lie i was skeptical when you said to keep the size of the dough same as the size of the dholl ball but i understood why u said so when i rolled it out! It was perfect! And none of my dal puri broke while rolling! Can't wait to try more of your recipes ❤

Dhall Puri originates from Bihar. Indentured labourers went to different countries ruled by the British i.e Mauritius, south Africa, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and most of the islands in the west indies. In all these places they cook dhall Puri . Also in all these places Bihari with all its different spelling is a common name. Bihari in Hindi means someone from Bihar.

Food variety is my hobby, different flavour, different countries food I like to try, always, I can cook, I can say I'm a good home chef.

Merci beaucoup. Yours has been the easiest to follow recipe I have found so far. I miss this delicious treat from my holidays to Mauritius. This is so similar to "Daal Puri" that is so widely loved in our city of Kolkata, India, we usually deep fry the flattened dough and serve it with a semi gravy potato curry or sweet chutney. I'm yet to figure out the history between this particular Bengali & Mauritian food.

The majority of our ancestors came from India so Indian cuisine has had a lot of influence on Mauritian food! Of course throughout the years,the recipes had to be adapted to our ancestors’ own ways of living. Being indentured labourers, I doubt that oil was easily accessed so they had to find other alternatives to cook the Puri, thus they probably cooked it on wooden stoves and on tawas.

​​@@melissahippolyte2937they cook dhall Puri the same way in the west indies and other parts of the world where indentured labourers migrated. In west indies the dhall Puri's are about 3 times the size they are in Mauritius. Once read an article by a dhall Puri seller in Mauritius saying that his grand father started making the dhall Puri smaller as it was more convenient to sell them from his bicycle. I love Trini cooking and have many Trini friends. Very similar to Mauritian food but tend to be a lot spicier. Trinidad grows some some of the hottest chillies in the world.😅

How many dholl puris do you get with this recipe please?

Hello, the dough needs to be very soft and when you roll, ensure that it is done evenly so that the dhal is spread evenly. If there is no holes after rolling, the hot air inside will make the dhall puri to rise. Also, if the dhal has chunks (not well crushed), it will stick to the dough when you roll and will make holes in the dhall puri. No worries, the first try is always like that (mine too 😄) Tips - The dough is similar to farata dough but more soft, when you apply the oil the second time, it can be messy but keep going until the dough absorbs the oil. However, if the dough is not soft when you knead at beginning, even if you apply more oil later it won't become soft, so the measurement and texture when you knead is crucial (depending on the flour you are using, some flour need more water) 😊🤗

@@rosanazir8070 no need for baking powder.. it's the same as dough farata.. for it to rise, you need to know how to knead the dough. Furthermore for the dhall puri to be soft you need oil as not only it helps binding the dough but also makes the dhall puri / roti soft and can be freezed. Some recipes do use baking powder such as Trunidad dhall puri but ours is a typical Mauritian recipe 😄

Its dhalpuri roti in Trinidad .. but we never use the dhal water ..and we put baking powder in the dough ..oil only used for actually cooking the roti.. but tjis looks great . I 😍🇹🇹

Thanks for sharing.. I’ll definitely give it a go. Made these last week and it was a disaster 😳 I’m not too good at dhall names.. please advise.. is it yellow split peas? Or split gram? That should be used? Thanks 💕

In this video we are using split gram but you can also use yellow split peas. Cooking time for yellow split peas is lesser compare to split gram 😊
