This was recorded in 1998. I read today that Nanci survived bouts with breast cancer in 1996 and thyroid cancer in 1998. What a strong spirit. Rest in Peace.
Such a beautiful song,Maura’s stunning voice &Nanci’s beautiful harmony,RIP Nanci,a stunning artist

Agree, both exceptional artists/vocalists. The kind you don't forget! And Jerry Douglas on dobro ain't exactly chopped liver!
RIP dear Nanci. I was heartsick when Dan Fogelberg passed away over a decade ago, followed a few months later by Kate McGarrigle. Now I am incredibly saddened by the passing of Nanci Griffith. All incredibly gifted songwriters. We were blessed to have heard and lived their music.

Ireland has over the last century produced some of the most amazing singers and here is another one. Such a huge talent. No wonder Nanci spends so much time in the Emerald isle
Unbelievable. Two of my favorite songbirds. RIP Nanci. What an artist. Such sensitive and lovely songwriting! I love how Nanci humbly allows Maura to take the lead on the vocals, appearing to thoroughly enjoy the justice she offers this masterpiece. And the two together--wow, those harmonies. I can't stop listening.

We lost a great one today! Nanci Griffith was a great songwriter. Maura O'Connell did a masterful job on this song, with Nanci singing harmony.
Oh, Nanci, how can you have left us? Sweet travels.
These early transatlantic session albums were gold dust looking back. A whose who of musicltalent from both sides of the pond
Watching the transatlantic sessions was how I was introduced to Nanci Griffith. So sad to hear of her passing. May she rest in peace.

Modern, even I who am of Maura's generation wouldn't say that. Maura's seminal solo album Collected, her best work in my opinion, was released in 1987. There are so many, unique and diverse, traditional and non traditional, established and new, female singers, songwriters and musicians (men too) in Ireland today, it would be extremely difficult to pick any one above the rest.
I can't even begin to comment on this performance. Nanci is one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and this is just glorious. I've never heard of Maura O'Connell, but I'm going to look for her now. Amazing voice.
I've listened to this song hundreds of times by both Maura and Nanci and I cry every time. I feel silly every time I hear Maura sing it live. It's really the only song that does this to me. Such a treasure

Gorgeous song by two beautiful artists. So sad to hear of Nanci's passing. Gone too soon. Rest in peace wonderful lady. A beautiful angel now singing with the Lord. What a gift He got yesterday. Condolences to her family and musical friends. Thank you for all the lovely music Nanci.
I can't get enough of listening to great singers, performers and great songwriting like this.
What a beautiful pair of voices! Maura O'Connell sings with such power and beauty. Nanci Griffith sings and plays so beautifully. This is rare harmony.
Her phrasing is apt, thrilling. This is just marvelous, in all directions.
Such sadness to learn of Nancy's passing. A heart and voice in the correct place , always.....not forgetting this version with the lovely voice of Maura O'Connell.
I think this living room might be my actual image of heaven.
I have always loved Nanci Griffith's work. Maura O'Connell singing her music just makes it that much more beautiful!
what a beautiful song!! Nanci has a big heart, a beautiful soul....it's visible....When she smiles, it's a present.....
RIP Nancy, you brought joy with your music
Oh my, this song has got to be one of the most breaking and beautiful ever written. Just love it so much. Thanks for posting !
Brilliant
It's a song about her grandparents living on a farm during the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Nanci explained that before singing this in concert
Unbelievable performance here. Sorry to hear about Nanci's passing. Truly great.

I do love her music and it was a very gracious of her to welcome my husband and I to sit and share drinks and conversation with her and her band members after a small local concert we went to years ago. Our oldest daughter chose" Feet of a Dancer" for her dance with her daddy at her wedding. Maura's music has been a part of the "soundtrack" of our 30 year marriage from the beginning. She has a beautiful voice and there is also so much soul in every song she performs. Thank you for sharing this video. It is a beautiful reminder of love even in troubled times.
It is how this music slides with ease into the best instincts of American country music......and her voice, so exqusisite, leaves the hardest man in tears.
This is undoubtedly the best version of this song. I love Maura O'Connell's voice and the passion she brings to everything she records.

Hi I agree with your comment but thank god for YT people outside of Ireland would not have heard of her.Ireland is graced by so many fine singers and she is a truley talented artist and more important a fine human being.I saw her in concert for charity last year and was blown away by her talent and humanity.
This reminds me of my wife and I on our honeymoon in Ireland 13 years ago. We listened to this album the whole time. We named our youngest daughter Maura. Love this song.
No words. Genius song and performance. Rest In Peace, Nanci. Thank you for your art.
Watching this and I can't still believe that Nanci Griffith is no longer with us. This is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Crying my eyes our listening to this....and I am completely Ok with that...bless them.
Before I even knew you, You aged, grew ill, And passed, Without so much as as a "How do you do". Still, my heart beats to yours, And whatever should come to pass, I stand beside you, Evermore.
Thats the devine voice I heard on my Robert Earl Keen background vocals. Sublime!
You and all who have been sooo blessed to have made music with Nancy Griffith will always feel her in your soul. Now she IS MUSIC.
What a wonderful performance by all of the band!
This song is the best commentary on prosperity / bust and feast / famine cycle of farmers - WORLDWIDE! I LOVE IT... Such universal truths. One day, hopefully when it is not too late, we will recognize we wouldn't eat without the struggles of farmers.
Every time I see Maura live I end up crying...her voice is just so beautiful.
American Celtic and Scandinavian tunes. I love it. Best regards and thanks from PB in Sweden
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

Oh, damn - this really did bring tears to my eyes and I know this song. The song of their voices and the sound of their hearts. :)
Rip Nancy xxx what a singer
Maura's voice rinces me out like a wet towel. Pure stunning combo though. The pure drop.
Had the great good fortune to see Nanci in concert in a tiny club in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. I was at least 10 years a devoted fan - maybe nearly 20, I don't remember the year. Humble, charming, and utterly inspiring. This teaming with Maura O'Donnell is gold. Rest well.
Jerry Douglas on dobro!! Simply the best!! Awesome voices!!
In this time of troubles Nanci takes me back to my teenage years and makes me hope the world can be a begterplace
Always loved Nanci. Used to watch her at the Texas Club in Baton Rouge when she was rising. Obviously, a talented rising star. Love her. Her covers are killer too.
Catch that blackbird's wing, Nanci. Love you forever.
so incredible ...Maura and Nanci ...... RIP Nanci
I just watched a 2 hour documentary on the "black blizzards' of the "dust bowl". My heart goes out to the victims of that prolonged drought. This song stands as a nice tribute to their fortitude and courage.
This is just beautiful. Thank you for putting it up here.
Two amazing women, and they're lovely together.
Beautiful , love that great song
just beautiful, Maura's voice is just amazing, a special version.
A truly memorable performance
So good to hear Maura O'Connell again, Lovely
I have seen Maura as a solo, I saw her with Nanci, and I saw her with the GREAT Mary Black. Each time I left saying her voice can rattle the windows! I think this video shows how much Nanci loved sharing the stage with her fellow artist.
I love this version, Ihe power of Maura`s voice adds another layer of depth to this song.Nanci sounded great and looked like she was having fun doing the harmonies.
Must have watched this over 100 time it get me ever time xxx

Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever". All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.
Beautiful song, her version of 'feet of a dancer' is also Beautiful

As beautiful voice as the lead singer has she is but a candle next to the radiant beacon of Nanci Griffith. Nancy wrote this song, performed it for so many years with a passion that is contagious. Maura was lucky to be inspired by Nanci who was a worthy role model and brought out the passion in the younger artist. If the vocalist brings a good voice and decent talent to the performance it is merely a starting point. The music is the vehicle through which the passion, honesty of expression, and artistry of the interpretation can then flow. To me, Nancy Griffith is the 240 V OLT current. Nuff said
I saw Maura sing with Van Morrison in L.A. (along with Solomon Burke and members of The Chieftains) a couple of months ago. Great show at a very small venue.
Breath taking
I had the pleasure of seeing Maura 20 years ago when she was a guest vocalist for Phil Coulter and she was outstanding. She was funny cuz she was wearing a nice dress and looked great but she clomped onto the stage like she was headed for the milking parlor. I heard that she was bound for Nashville but never heard another thing about her until this video. I am delighted that she has befriended Nanci and is still performing. You bet that i would have loved to have been there. So talented.
OMG, totally brilliant singing, song-writing, musicianship and vocal harmony! Blown away by this performance! God bless Nanci, recently departed, but in our hearts for ever. Love and peace.
Incredibly lovely, the melody and the lyrics are stunning & their voices.. pared down beauty at its best.
~lyrics~ Baby I know that we've got trouble in the fields When the bankers swarm like locust out there turning away our yield The trains roll by our silos, silver in the rain They leave our pockets full of nothing But our dreams and the golden grain Have you seen the folks in line downtown at the station They're all buying their ticket out and talking the great depression Our parents had their hard times fifty years ago When they stood out in these empty fields in dust as deep as snow And all this trouble in our fields If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal They'll never take our native soil But if we sell that new John Deere And then we'll work these farm with sweat and tears You'll be the mule I'll be the plough Come harvest time we'll work it out There's still a lot of love, here in these troubled fields There's a book up on the shelf about the dust bowl days And there's a little bit of you and a little bit of me In the photos on every page Now our children live in the city and they rest upon our shoulders They never want the rain to fall or the weather to get colder And all this trouble in our fields If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal They'll never take our native soil But if we sell that new John Deere And then we'll work this farm with sweat and tears You'll be the mule I'll be the plough Come harvest time we'll work it out There's still a lot of love, here in these troubled fields You'll be the mule I'll be the plough Come harvest time we'll work it out There's still a lot of love, here in these troubled fields
