I'm pretty sure that's because mattresses are getting thicker to provide more support while the sheets remain the same size.

The law is so mattress companies don’t put waste into your mattress! They used to literally scoop up landfill and put it into them, so the government required they put tags of the actual items in the stuffing. However, the stores would just clip the tag off, so they had to make it illegal for them to do that as well!

Actually the tag is there to let the consumer know what the mattress is made of and filled with. Back in the day, mattress makers would fill their mattresses with all sorts of bad and unhygienic stuff and sell those mattresses to customers like that. Lots of bad stuff happened and the law added the mattress tag thing, along with regulations on what can and can’t be in a mattress. To protect you from harmful materials and shady business practices. They’d even try to cut the tags off before selling it to you so you’d be none the wiser. That’s why the tag says that. You as the consumer can take it off if you want, but I would suggest keeping the tag on, especially if you plan of giving the mattress to someone else for use. They deserve to know what they’re sleeping on too.

​@chrissysonicutdrloz Well... as someone who has always removed tags from everything because I feel not doing so is tacky... the one tag I've never bothered with has always been my mattresses. And it's because it's NOT in anybody's way, nor is it visible when the bed is made. I never even notice it when I'm making the bed. So no...the tag does not interfere with any aspect of making, using, or living with a mattress.

I remember thinking this when I was five or so, I only read the first part (I doubt I even knew the word "consumer" at the time) and thought I was being rebellious when I removed it lol

My dad managed to convince me there were tag police or something when I was little, and it took like ten years for me to realize he lied because I never heard anything about it and I actually read the tag on a mattress fully

The history behind this is that mattress manufacturers used to stuff all sorts of stuff into their mattresses that weren't good quality, and sometimes not safe. That tag lists what material the mattress is made of.

Yes and no there is a history but that not it. Before it was out right band you could either by a new mattress or a refurbished mattress, but refurbished matrices companies didn't do a good job their process didn't kill bed bugs, and refurbished mattress cause the bed bug problem to get worse. So shades stores to hid the bad rep would sell refurbished mattress as if they were new ones. So the law was passed the required new mattress were given white tags, and refurbished mattress were given yellow tags, and law banned store from removing the tags to hide which they were selling. Since the the banned the selling of refurbished mattress (prive used sales not covred) which out repealing the tag law

It blows my mind that there are people who actually believed that. Even moreso that there are people who would obey.

I think many Countries have this because back in the 18 and 19 hundreds we used a lot of things that were later revealed to be toxic. So to assure the customers the Tag has to stay on so that you can see for yourself whats in there.

When I was a kid I was sure that if I ripped the tag off I'd be arrested immediately.

Fun fact the reason that tag is there is because back in the day a lot of mattress manufacturers would actually stuff their mattresses with crappy material so that tag was there to prove that this mattress is not filled with crappy material and is not made of material that will end up breaking after a week or a month of using the mattress
