it's funny how there are basically just 3 types of cats: 1. goes into shock or a disassociative state 2. constantly meows in protest while still resigned to their fate 3. woke up and chose violence. I've only had to bathe 1 cat in my life but unfortunately the same cat that fought off multiple generations of racoons and survived living her whole life surrounded by coyotes wasnt a push over. That bath was my Vietnam.

I was wondering how the happy hoodie worked for cats, then I remembered that their whiskers would act as spatial gauges that helped the cat determine the kind of spaces they had to manoeuvre. So the happy hoodie probably lets them feel like their in a tight snug space, which comforts them. That's pretty cool!

A few years ago my collie picked up fleas and it wasn't until the other dog and both cats were infected that it was discovered. Most of the animals were pretty easy to treat but my poor long-haired senior cat had the worst time of it. She was 15 at the time and I eventually had to shave her down because of how they gathered near her stomach. It didn't matter how many baths I gave her, collars, drops, they were absolutely constant. Thankfully after the shaving they had no place to hide and she was finally allowed some peace.

Try using Dawn dish liquid, gobs and gobs of it. Slather it right on there as thick as you can get it, right down to their skin. It's one of the first things I always do when I take in rescue kittens because they are usually still too small for any of the topical flea treatments. The cats hate it but the dying fleas hate it more. It suffocates them right out of existence.

I had a long hair cat that would get matted really bad on his belly every summer. He was an indoor/outdoor cat. My father would brush him out every night, but the belly hair would mat up so bad that we just couldn't get through it. So we shaved his belly. It was super cute cause the cat would lay on his back on my father's legs, and we would shave his belly very carefully with a mustache trimmer. He would just let us do it. And you never knew he was shaved unless he laid on his back to show you.

Long ago I had a beloved kitty whose fur was so long around his bottom that he couldn't keep himself groomed and poo would actually get stuck in it. (Blech.) We got his bottom shaved at the vet's a couple of times, but that got expensive! Also repeated trauma for poor kitty, so we bought our own shaver. We would take him down and set him on top of the drier. BF (later hubby) would hold him and I would shave his whole bottom area. I swear my kitty, Lars, could read my mind, though! I would just have the thought, "Hmm, it's about time to shave Lars's bottom again," and he would look up very startled and run and hide under the bed!! 😂 Lars, 1978-1991. A very special cat (but then, they all are!) Still much loved.

Such a well behaved moggie! Reminds me of my cat who passed 20 years ago. Woolley was just like Lucius, but completely black with golden eyes. I gave up trying to cut off her mats and about twice a year she went to the vet for a sleep and woke up with a mohawk. The vets don’t have your sense of style.

brush your cat DAILY so your cat never gets matted. Especially If it's an indoor outdoor cat brush your cat every time they go in and out in the summer to find ticks. Your cat will love this once they get use to the routine and beg you to brush them.

I adopted a tiny Bengal once and he had awful fleas as a roughly five or six week old. Later on? Well a Bengal does not need regular brushing but he would get excited and purr the moment he saw a brush.

Totally agree. I used to have a lh cat very like Lucian whose hair would matt if you looked at it hard. We got him as a rescue and he was very matted but afraid of any effort to groom him because his previous owner's idea of grooming was to tear at his coat with a metal comb. After several months of patient work only using a soft brush and snipping out matts with scissors he came to love being groomed and would jump on my lap when I picked up the brush.

Thank you for explaining why allowing any animal to get matted is not only unsightly, but actually painful for the animal. As a former Persian cat owner, I am way too familiar with front chest and butt areas being prone to mats. Those being the two areas where Onyx hated to be brushed. My only solution was to snip into the core of the mat with a cuticle snip and then use a slicker brush to finish.
