Apparently this is the national dog of Madagascar. Tuléar is the former name of the harbour city of Toliara on the southwest coast of the island. The breed's name is literally "Cotton(ball) of Tuléar". Legend has it that they're the result of Bichon Tenerife dogs from Spanish/Canarian pirate ships mating with Madagascan dogs in the 16th and 17th century. So, Gigi is a pirate by ancestry. Yarr!

They are a close relative of the Bichon Frise. They were taken with French settles to Madagascar a few hundred years ago and left to guard their children from the local wildlife of snakes, reptiles, and other dangerous creatures. From that they evolved a strong protective instinct of they're human family and are very family oriented, protective of their human family. And I mean cuteness, they are 11/10 on the cuteness scale.

You can tell she was a show dog by how well she tolerates all the fussing . I had a Beardie and there is NO WAY she would put up with even a fraction of that !

That looked like 3 different dogs 😁 After the blow-dry she was just a puff ball. Very sweet dog. I especially liked the bit where she looked at the camera as if to say "can you believe this bish?" 😂

Got three of these Coton cutie pies. Each is a retired Mom and around nine years old. They are a joy to behold and are the best companions. Each has been groomed hundreds of times and accepts the process without complaint. Cotons are the best kept secret in the dog world!

Would you recommend a retiree over a coton puppy? My husband and I will be adopting in the next couple years.

Watching you transform all the pups on your channel is surprisingly entertaining. You make everything look so easy. But as they say, like any skill, part of the mastery is to make it look easy to the observer. I am happy I found your channel. It is uplifting and positive.

Gigi clearly didn't super enjoy the process, but she was so brave and handled it like a champion. A true testament to both your grooming skills and your mom's care for her.

I love how her ears perked up at the mention of treats! 😂

That looks like Winifred! I got Wini from an animal shelter in 2011 and they listed her as a Scottie mix. I knew she wasn't a scottish terrier, but wasn't sure what she was until 4 years ago when I finally got tired of "What kind of dog is she?". Took a DNA and BAM! Coton de Tulear. 😊 She's an old lady now, but she is the best dog I've ever had.

I'm fairly positive after watching this that my boy is a coton. Adopted him in Feb 2020 and he had a similar listing, I believe they had him listed as a schnauzer mix aha. I'm a groomer myself and have never quite encountered anything as soft as him before so I've always questioned what he actually is.

What a well-mannered little lady she is!

So cute! My cotton ball passed away three years ago. She was my best friend for almost 16 years and I miss her so much! She loved the blow dryer but hated to be brushed. So the trimmer/clipper was the best way to keep her tidy! Such friendly happy little dogs with a really fun history!

Yeah, with her knee and her teeth, she really didn't get the best of the genetics from her litter. I wonder if those were things in her family's DNA pool the breeder knew about.

omg! I had a Coton de Tulear as a kid and no one ever knows what they are. That's so fun to see one on your channel! Mine looked very similar, with the slightly darker ears. When mine was a puppy, she had brown ears and a brown spot on her back but they faded away to a very pale, barely visible tan by the time she was an adult.

What a sweet pup! Shes so secure bc she knows you and she knows what's up!

SO SOFT AND FLUFFY! I want to cuddle that pup all day. The look she gives you while waiting in her purple shampoo is priceless. She looks so beautiful in her haircut and Christmas collar, but i do kinda love her shaggy "Before" hair.

I got so bummed when I heard the “I’m taking her down short” because I love that fluff 🥹 A short dog is an easy dog though, Gigi is adorable either way!

My mom’s childhood dog was a poodle deemed slightly imperfect for showing, but according to reports she was perfect at being an adorable pet! She was perfectly healthy, it was just her coat color wasn’t perfectly white.

So happy to see a Coton de Tuléar on your channel! They're such wonderful dogs. I have one myself and she's almost 10 years old - I got her for my own 10th birthday from my parents and she's the best friend I could imagine. Incredibly empathetic, sensitive, observant, playful and loving.

For anyone who doesn't know Coton De Tulears are an evolved breed of dog from I believe to be Bichon Friese that went to Madagascar along with French settlers a few hundred years ago. They were left with children mainly but also defended houses from the local snakes and other hostile animals on the island and have developed a strong protective instinct of their human family from this. They are a wonderful companion breed and very protective of their family. And I mean cuteness level is 11/10.

My 11 yo doggo is a mixed breed in type of Cotton. Just a bit bigger and not as fluffy, fur on his legs is short. He looks like a cotton ball on a 4 toothpicks 😂 He has a character of a Cotton too. He's the sweetest,most patient and playful dog I ever had. Clipping nails,bath, brushing teeth,you name it, absolutely no problem. Even our vet is always at awe how patient and calm he is. We were absolutely blessed with him,I wish he could live 20 more years.

What an incredible sweetheart. Quite a long wash and haircut! Especially for her painful knee. But she sits and stands there so sweet and quiet. And what a beautiful trim session she has undergone by you @girlwiththedogs2 ! Also such a beautiful white and fluffy coat. One soft, cute, fluffy ball with the sweetest eyes and ears ever! 😍🥰 Love from a huge fan from the Netherlands

Gigi is a beautiful dog and it is so nice of you to do this for your mom. We have a Coton de Tulear who will be 1 year old in Feb. Her name is Yvette. They are the sweetest dogs.

So pretty, and I love the groom. I have always thought this is what a Bichon looks like, and that the Coton was a smaller dog. It’s nice to actually see a full grown Coton to see that they aren’t a teacup sized dog.

They're not little at all haha. Cotons vary in size, but my girl is quite large and weighs 19 pounds or so - all of her siblings were born kinda big. More to love lol.

We just got a Coton de Tulear puppy. Omg such a lively ball of the softest fur you’ve ever touched. Molly is a sweetie and loved very much. Such a delightful personality.

I have never seen a Coton before. Excellent temperaments and built well for a small dog. I really like Gigi's personality at the end. Looking forward to Mayo!

My neighbor has a coton de tulear but she’s all black and her name is Storm. She’s a super talent and fast girl. Her owner takes great care of her and she’s amazing with her agility! I’m so happy you were able to show, I didn’t know about this breed until I met my neighbor and Storm is so great with kids. Her owner trained her well.

Gigi was so good well-behaved what a sweet little dog she is I love her and she looks gorgeous!
