Interesting to hear Tim talk about reaching a flow state and about being present but not distracted by other things/life/his own anxiety. He's really talking about a high level of focus. It comes from both an insane amount of practice and being mentally in the zone. I've heard other musicians, performers, and athletes talk about reaching flow or being in the zone. It's what helps them give really stellar performances.

This is so bad ass to see. Trivium was the first band to get me into heavier music coming from the big 4 of thrash in middle school, and now Polyphia has been making me think of writing guitar in different ways for the last 6 years or so. Awesome interview

This chat came at such a good time for me. I just turned 27 and feel like I've only begun scratching the surface of how to better myself and become healthier and better adjusted. It's cool to hear Tim speak so candidly about his experience. And of course Matt has loads of insight and is super supportive because of how much he has integrated these positive practices in his life.

The thing I love most about this is that I'm hapa too (Chinese/English) and I resonate with both experiences on both parts here - mainly Matt's experiences growing up and the military father (mine was in the Royal Air Force) but also Tim's experiences with discovering music from such a young age! Obviously, I'm not famous or successful whatsoever, like these two but it's cool that I can still relate to parts of their upbringings. Also, fun fact: the koi becoming the dragon is actually a traditional Chinese mythology story from the dragon's gate of Yellow River (China's 2nd longest river) 😄

Brilliant conversation. I discovered Polyphia in 2018, I think via Spotify, the New Levels album - I’d never heard anything like it before. I then proceeded to tell anyone I met about the band including playing it over and over on Bluetooth speaker at every festival I’ve been to since. Everyone who heard them loved it, usually by asking “who the fuck is this band?”.

around the 50:00 mark where Tim is talking about using weed to reach flow state is similar to my experience too. I've played guitar for 12~ years or so before using any THC and there were times I just wasn't inspired and it felt like a chore to even play my guitar. When I've used THC and practiced, I hit flow state immediately.

Great to see these guys chop it up. Also true is Matt could benefit by letting the guest speak versus chiming in with his own point of relevance (“thats like when I….”). When he provides his own stories, we want to hear that too, but mix them in more sporadically so it doesn’t stop the flow of the convo. Thanks for making a great video Matt 🤘
