This channel series is so so interesting. Can't wait to see how Matt gets on following this new program. Listened to the podcast yesterday and I was surprised that Matt will not increase his training volume/mileage increase till maybe the last 6 weeks before his major marathon race. It sometimes appears all backwards to me so will be very interesting to follow and see the progress. Really wish Matt the best.

Maybe it's because I'm a new runner - age 41 coming into running as a cyclist, started in October 2023 - but it's the curiosity and the drive to improve yourself as a runner, irrespective of anyone else, that really has me so engaged with your journey Matt. I found this awesome channel around November I think, and fell in love with the Ekiden content which was perfectly suited for my background (I've lived in Japan and my wife is from Japan, spend 2 months there every year) but then found your Kenya stuff and I have to say I think this is the most exciting running channel I've found on KZread. Also it's cool to follow your workouts on Strava. Very excited for you this year Matt you're going to crush your PB get it!

These series are great because they give us so much. The main things I take from them are session ideas (and how they're going to look/feel), and motivation from seeing the up/downs etc., that are so relatable, and how they pan out over the training week.

100% respect your love for the sport and your journey. Looking forward to more videos to the serious. I too have been stuck the last 2 years (2:45-2:49). I found higher mileage does not equal faster times for all. Same as running nutrition (gels etc). I'm headed to Boston in a few weeks and took a different approach to training this time around. Would love to share my race result. Wish you the best bro. keep on chasing those goals.

Cant wait to hear any insights on cramping as this effects me also and it doesnt seem to simply be dehydration / electrolyte imbalances. Are you thinking its coming from muscle overload and neuromuscular fatigue? Is the plan to get lots of speed into the legs (to overcome said fatigue) prior to switching into marathon specific training?

I was reading your Sweat Elite article about the zone 6, 5, 4 training with zone 1 and 2 recovery days, and it got me thinking about how to structure my own workouts. I was wondering if you typically do the same intensity work for both bike and run on those higher intensity days and take recovery, or if you separate them into different workouts?

Interesting. Rate limiting step is lactate. Perhaps a change in your gastro-biome; make sure you don't lack the right bacteria in your gut. I'm thinking some diet tweaks in addition to training, somehow your are getting on the wrong side of electrolytes during competition; that isn't training, that's diet (sorry, thinking out loud here). Feel free to reach out.

Imo ads are just annoying. I have no problem with brand plugs or brand sponsorships though. For good content and if there's a lot of extras like on the website that can enhance one's training I think it's fine to ask for a fee. I agree I don't get why some people think everything should be for free. They don't work for free themselves haha.

I think with your trainings you are easily worth better. I know 2:15-17 guys that couldnt keep up with your trainings

14:00 and 29:20 or even the slower end of the range you believe possible would be Steve Plasencia-type times at age 38. He peaked at 13:19/27:45 at over age 30. He ran 2:12:51 at very close to age 38. Targeting the times you mentioned at mile-5k-10k is more absurd for you than shooting for a 2:15 marathon on 108km a week. Reaching the times mentioned would be most likely on the same type of training ideal for a FASTER MARATHON. 140-160 km per week for as long as possible. I would be very happy for you and proud of you if you reach that level on the way to a faster marathon, but this is going to end in bitterness and heartbreak. You are going to have a hard time going sub-15:00.

If you want to stop the cramping, you should talk to a pro cycling dietician. They're doing a lot of things like training the gut to take more carbs per hour, etc

Stoked you’re doing another one of these. The pro stuff is great - candy - keep it up. But this is meat and potatoes content.
