Polyphia is the most listenable Prog/Instrumental band I've ever heard... you just don't miss the vocals. Full of life and emotion, their songs are something else. But even a fun pop song like ABC, with vocals, is still technically amazing. Never get tired of first-time Polyphia reactions. :)

On the pop trend I would next suggest 40 oz. It's 6 years old and catchy as all hell. You could play this at a club and people would dance to it! Also, for something harder but more recent I'd say check out "Look, but Don't Touch" and "Bloodbath."

That's why Vai is one of the great masters. He doesn't just "play" guitar, he grabs the guitar and wrings pleasured moans out of it.

This is an amazing band! Everyone always suggests GOAT and Playing God, which are great but I also suggest Chimera, 40oz, Yas, and Icronic (especially the drum playthrough video)

You should do Playing God next, then Aviator is my favorite from their older work. I like the Chimera guitar playthrough better than the official video. Also check out Upside Down by Jason Richardson and Luke Holland, featuring Tim Henson. Luke is a great drummer. Polyphia's drummer Clay Aeschliman has a few drum playthroughs on the Polyphia channel and on the Meinl channel.

Yeah, it's like math rock with pop/edm approachability (because it's mainly still 4/4 and the chord progressions are still rather basic for the most part). All their stuff is really good, even their older more traditional prog metal stuff. Check out Playing God and GOAT by them, but don't stop there :)

I have all their tabs except the latest album and everything is 4/4. I recall an interview where Tim said due to some issue with changing time in the software he uses he just didn't bother. And definitely not math rock although it is closest to that than anything but Polyphia really is kind of its own genre.

It's been over a year but check out their older stuff like Renaissance and Muse all the way back to their Inspire EP if you haven't yet. Renaissance is probably one of my favorite all-time albums because it captures elements of about everything I like from every style they draw from in that record. I'd fly anywhere in the world if they ever play that album live in its entirety.

ITS NOT MATHCORE, ITS ALL PLAYED IN 4/4. My biggest let peeve. Mathcore is mathcore because they switch up time signatures in a way that you literally have to do math to make the song fit in a unified structure. This is not that. It's just super technical.

Remove mathcore from your mind with them.. They don't have a set style and would never call it mathcore. It always melodic, technical, and blends harmonics, tapping, swiping and so on. Honestly.. they have a signature sound and it's pretty much always great because of how melodic it is but based on simple chord progressions.

My current biggest pet peeve: people thinking that fast technical playing is mathcore. Mathcore is called mathcore because the time signatures change in a way that mathematically fit together. All of Polyphia's songs are in 4/4 with pop chord progressions. They are not mathcore, in fact they don't fit into any genre because they meld aspects of other genres while maintaining a unique identifiable sound.

If you really want to geek out on music, you should check out this interview with Tim Henson, Tosin Abasi, and Misha Mansoor of Periphery.
