MAT-49 Parts Kit
This is Part 1 of a video that will (eventually) end in a fully-restored, firing submachine gun, just as God (in the form of a bunch of French guys) intended! As a gun designer/builder/manufacturer, there aren't too many things more important to building your knowledge and gaining experience than figuring out how to put chopped-up parts kits back together. Watch and see how I do it...

Always liked the MAT-49. Look forward to the restoration
I was in the Legion in the 90’s. We still used them on certain missions

Back in the 90's cops would sometimes carry them. In the 80's I sometimes saw cops with MAS 38s.

I've always thought the MAT49 was an interesting post WW2 design.
Call me crazy but I "repaired" a drilled chamber on a AK barrel. It was only on one side. Someone tried drilling the trunnion rivet and went too far. It was about 1/16 so I tapped it to a fine thread hardened screw and spot welded it. A careful chamber ream cleaned up the inside. 7.62x39 over 500 rounds no problem. I retrieved some brass cases and there was absolutely zero mark where the case was supported by the repair plug. This barrel was worth saving as the polish underfolder numbers matching parts set looked absolutely unissued.
Love the MAT-49. You're very lucky to have these sorts of guns
It's marked MAC instead of MAT because it has been manufactured ine The Châtellerauld arsenal and not the St Étienne one

As @victuff9765 says MAT was Tulle. St Étienne would be MAS (as in FAMAS). You're right that MAC is Châtellerauld.

That's correct, MAT for "Manufacture d'Armes de Tarbes", MAC for "Manufacture d'Armes de Châtellerault", MAB for "Manufacture d'Armes de Bayonne", Manurhin for "Manufacture du Haut-Rhin" etc...

Wouldn't threaded plugs with an outer weld make a stronger repair than just smooth wall press fit?
Many years ago I drew up a 2011 style frame (infinity) Using micrometers, depth gauges and digital calipers. Put into cad it was more than accurate enough to build from. Even have gcode for it somewhere. Looking forward to the next instalment.

I love old Firearms like this they have such a dieselpunk kind of feel to them.
I wish parts kits still made financial sense for the average person. I priced out a ppsh41 not long ago and boy did they spike in price.
The fact that a chunk of steel with various shapes cut off of it, costs thousands of dollars to buy legally... There's no emoji that describes the state of the art.
That James Bond money shot down the barrel was glorious! Thanks, Mark.
If you had a laser welder, you could weld some small pucks in a stack to make it almost completely solid again to a specific height, then put a plug in on top of those.

Laser welder's are getting extremely cheap -- I've seen some for $6k that are the same shape as a model I've used that was actually good (implies they're made in the same China factory). Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the one that looks like dice. Worthless. A good one is powerful enough to blast a hole in a nickel, instantly.
It looks like an interesting project, Mark. I hope to see you test fire it when its finished.
Looking forward to this build, it's awesome that you share your experience with us.

Thanks Mark I’m glad utube is not shutting this down 🎉🎉🔫🔫👨🏻🦯🇺🇸
MAC stands for Manufacture d'Armes de Châtellerault, the manufacturer of this particular one, the ones that say MAT are made by Tulle, Manufacture d'Armes de Tulle
Don't feel bad about selling your MAT49 , I'm sure Ian at forgotten Weapons was SO HAPPY! How do I know that ,well Ian is probably the only person who'd buy a MAT49 when any other submachine is available.
Can't wait for a hour long video on the rebuild. Yes I'd watch that.
Can't wait for this project to get underway. This thing is going to be slick! :)
Nice kit you got there Mark. Haven't seen too many of them. The price of all these kits has gone through the roof lately!
Awesome. Can't wait. Really hope to see everything in detail. Wish I had the money for one of these.
I love it when you restore a historical arm, doesn't matter if it's popular, I love to see old things (especially guns) brought back to life.
Make it live! I enjoy these kinds of projects.
I remember when these part kits was nasty cheap & barely de-milled. Now they're expensive & cut the up. Mannn..how miss the old days 😢
I really like these parts of kit builds!
I'm hooked! Old subguns are my thing!

Keep them coming, looking forward to seeing the finished project
I found it interesting when you said scan data. I went to school for tool and die about 11 years ago, hoping I could work with firearms. I found myself working in metrology and now a CMM lab manager and chief dimensional guru in the automotive industry. I am currently gravitating towards design and thinking of what's next in life. Thanks for reminding me of why I pursued this career in the first place.
As a metallurgist I approve of your fix. Fookin plug and weld er
On the chamber holes; I'd tap threads, add a plug, then weld it.
Nice, best of luck with getting her running again.
Looking forward to part 2👌🏼 as always
Awesome build
Thanks Mark, I love this stuff!
Cool parts kit! Sure miss the good ones…
Can't wait for part 2
Can't wait for part 2!
Great buy mark! If any can make it sing, it's you. Can't wait on updates! 👌👍
Oh hell yeah. Being a amateur machinist (very amateur) I love vids like this. Looking forward to part 2.
Looking forward to this!
I look forward to an update on this one.
M.A.C. stands for "Manufactures d'Armes de Châtellerault". Good video
Mark, I look forward to seeing all of these. Well I watch all of them. But this one has my attention.
Can’t wait for more.
Looking fwd to part two👍
Can't wait for pt.2
Love your channel.
Ian will want a go at this.
Your the BEST! Thanks for the video!👍
Looks like a fun project
Awesome content
Great video
Can't wait to see it!
Very cool one to build.
Your barrel repair plan will work, or you could make a copper chamber plug and just fill the holes with weld.
Excellent back in the day I used to have a WW2 grease gun non functional but very nice oh well that's Life. Thank you for sharing this looking forward to seeing you restore it six stars brother
There’s a special place in hell for people who do this to historic guns.
This looks fun.
BRING MORE OF THIS!!!
Love it, thank you
Something about these 'more than meets the eye' guns
🤘🥸🤘 I love the mat 49!
Absolutely too cool
Nice video
French SMG? Ian has awoken.
Mark, check out "structured light" scanners. Pretty cool, we've got one at work.
very cool
Make an slightly undersize Aluminum boolit to put in the chamber when you knock the new pins in. You will then know how deep they went.
Ian is going to be paying you a visit.
thanks mark
Thank you
Can’t wait for part two, btw, your “math” in these vids is interesting (even when I don’t get it)!
Love it Mark and thank you! What c.n.c is now, blows my mind! When I worked with that you had to write every line of program, I hear now you don't have to do that:) I know you can make every part you have there in that pile "o" parts, can't wait to see what is next:)

Stick the original part in the scanner and then go back and flex the deficiencies for old chipped and worn parts.

I have a bunch of hundred dollar bills lying on a shelf that I will trade you! 😁
Maybe thread the holes in the barrel and thread a piece of similar metal in and weld flush the top portion. Would think that would hold.
Very cool. I wouldn’t bother tack welding the tops of the plugs. Maybe a little peening around the tip of the plug to give you peace of mind.

Good idea. I'd just tap it and screw in a plug, cut off excess and weld the top.
This is too cool
Last time I had seen a MAT-49 was in a picture my buddy's dad had from Vietnam.
cool vid
Weld would be my bet. Better than an extra pin in your hand.

Probably have to re-heat treat the barrel then. They won't see any force anyway, unless the case fails, at which point the pressure has other means of escape anyway. A threaded in set screw and some red loctite would suffice in this situation except you aren't reaming a set screw.
@nobodynoone2500
Жыл бұрын
@@garmancathotmailcom You can just do a bunch of spot welds waiting a min in between and not heat soak the part. But I agree that a set screw is a good option, but i'd weld the top of it.

Oh neat
sick
Time to break out the super glue.
I had a mate who plugged a Bren Barrel the same way.. But they were 0.250 holes... Threaded in rod and puddle welded...the recut the chamber.. It almost fired off a magazine..
Interesting.
In the past I've had good luck threading chamber holes for an extremely tight fit (although of course pressing works too) and then using a copper or aluminum slug in the chamber while welding the top over. I'll even shamefully suggest that I've made that repair work fine on an MG42 barrel. For thousands of rounds. 😁
Tap it and run some set screws in the barrel.
Out of any blowback action the Carl Gustaf M45 is king. Simplest and best looking. Although I've changed some details to make it more visually pleasing and durable
Really wish I had gotten a sten kit back in the 90's when they were sub 100 bucks.

@michaelkaiser1864 I bought ten MK3 kits back in the mid 90s for $10 each! But even though a MK2 or MK5 kit can be $500+ nowadays, in ten years you'll wish you'd bought a few when they're not available at any price, or just crazy expensive.
