A bout of encouragement for any bordeaux fans, we recently lost a bordeaux but we got her to 10, and another bordeaux we had stuck around till she was 8. Getting this breed to old age is making sure you look after them properly, both of ours were kept lean and got regular walks and exercise. Keeping dogs (especially large ones!) at a healthy weight is so so vital as it puts less strain on everything (e.g. joints, heart, breathing etc.) :)

Because the closet wall jutted out in front of the door, I was able to put a suitcase between the door and the wall, making it so that the door only opened enough for the cats. The sweetest, heaviest babies, basically just walking pillows. He was often profiled as an aggressive dog because of his size and underbite, but he wouldn’t hurt a fly😭. I also did not realize how short their life expectancies were in general. We lost Martín at a very young age and it absolutely shattered me because he wasn’t even 7. About two years ago she quickly put on about 20lbs on her 110lb frame and she began to get flaky, crusty skin on her back. The vet diagnosed her with hypothyroidism and once she was properly medicated the skin issue resolved on its own. Apparently, dogs need like 6x the dose a human needs in order to treat the condition. She is calm and very much an easy-going and gentle giant.

The boarding facility where my family kept our horses had two bull Mastiffs. In the day time during open hours they laid around in the tack room. They were friendly and never bothered anyone. However, after closing hours, these dogs were anything but friendly, woe to the dummy who had inspirations of breaking in and stealing anything, from the tack room or anywhere around the stable areas and horses. Years later my aunt rehomed a female bull Mastiff. He name was Zelda and she was Such a good, sweet girl. Everybody loved her. However, if someone knocked on the door that she didn't know, she was all business, you had to let her know that they were OK. She understood that immediately, she was very intelligent and very perceptive. And she never forgot anyone she met, no matter for how short a time. On the other hand, anyone we didn't know that came around, would have been seriously injured, if not killed, had they come in to the yard or house. These dogs are not pushovers in any sense of the word. My aunt had been informed that this breed only has a life expectancy of five years or so. When Zelda turned five, we were all on high alert, but we had hoped that with exceptional love and care, she would live a few more years. When Zelda turned six, we really had high hopes for her, and she never showed any signs or symptoms of illness. My mother received a phone call at 3:00 am one morning, it was my aunt calling from an emergency veterinary hospital, Zelda seemed to be in abdominal distress, and my Aunt wasted no time rushing her to a vet. Zelda died that morning, she was 6 1/2 years old. The vet said that there wasnt anything that could have been done for her, she had reached the end of her natural lifespan. I had always wanted a Mastiff, until that day, six and a half years isn't even close to long enough for a dog to live, for me. I have always wondered why the people involved with the big dog breeds with short life spans like this don't try to do something, maybe out cross to other breeds, to try to improve their lifespan. But nice puppy, and as usual, a very good grooming job by you.

A fellow Penguins fan! ML was one of a kind. It was devastating when the local station changed hands and told him to stop his unique style of calling games... he told them to pack sand and spent the rest of his career on radio. The station kept changing hands and the play by play team they have now is perhaps the most boring I've ever heard in any sport. Unfortunately that seems to be the trend - generic and stereotypical broadcast school voices. Don't forget "buy Sam a drink and get his dog one too!"

My mom is currently fostering a mastiff who she thinks is about 7yrs old. I'm not sure what specific breed of mastiff she is though, but she's MASSIVE! In comparison, she also has a pit mix that she adopted out right whom gets dwarfed by the mastiff. I've also found that the mastiff is more gentle when interacting with me (I use a wheelchair) than the pit mix is! 😂 I would love it if she kept the mastiff just as she did with the pit mix who was also a foster dog, but the mastiff is a lot for her to handle & the pit mix is also a tripod & my mom's afraid of the mastiff accidentally hurting the pit mix. Even though she's gentle with me, I still feel like she would be more than I could handle on my own. Hoping she finds her forever home soon!
