Hello! What you said about "toasting" the spices it is truth. My grandmother noticed the difference in the taste of the food when the garlic, oregano and salt were not light fried in oil. We called it "sofreír" in Spanish, and let me tell you, it does make a difference in the smell, taste and even the presentation of the dish. Thanks for sharing all this information!
Holy cow, Sadia you took your video footage to another level with the closeup cooking! Amazing!!😎☺️

I fully agree with this! The video quality got cinematic in this one 💯🤩
For my fellow colorblind friends, you can use apps on your phone to help identify colors, including brightness, of spices to visually check for freshness. I've used apps like this for years to check on dried parsley, basil, oregano, and thyme. Check the color when fresh, and then you can periodically check in to ensure freshness. Smell is usually my go-to for freshness, but you can also have the same benefit as our color-seeing friends with just a little help from technology.

I'm a South Indian and we love our spices and use them extensively in almost every single meal. Yet I stopped by this video because it is so calming to just watch your videos and there's a fresh perspective to every single topic you speak about 😊

Same here. I have and use a whole bunch of spices as a South Indian married to North Indian but came here to listen to Sadia's calming voice and explanations. Always love learning why we do what we do. Like why do we use cumin first with oil and cumin powder later in the dish. Great video Sadia, thank you.

Another reason to follow PUL's advice and shop at your local Asian market is that spices are MUCH cheaper there. At grocery stores in the US, we are typically paying a lot for the cute little bottles that have a tiny amount of spice inside. At a nearby Indian market, I can buy peppercorns, cinnamon, cumin, turmeric, cashews, almonds, etc., for far less money than at my general-purpose grocery store.
This video is a work of art! Absolutely stunning and informative

Sadia, just want to say, you changed my spice game! Before Pick Up Limes I was a baker, I would cook sweet things all day long but my savoury dishes were simply uninteresting and flavourless.. I started buying and using spices while trying up your recipes and now I cannot live without them! Thank you so much :)
After watching almost every video, I've tried my first vegan dish today.Your recipes are easy, such a treat for families...I'm genuinely looking at vegan.spices, brilliant.

Thank you for choosing one of our recipes as your first foray into plant-based cooking. I hope that this is just the beginning of your plant-based journey, and that you continue to enjoy experimenting with different recipes and flavors. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need any more guidance or inspiration along the way! 🥰 🌱
Herbs and spices are GREAT for the microbiome, too! They are a great way to get additional microbiome-food into your diet when you're still struggling to incorporate fruits and veggies (this is commonly a problem for those with IBS or SIBO). Not to mention adding more flavor can jazz up an otherwise boring or restricted diet. Great and beautiful video- keep up the great work! 🥰

Jesus Christ bless you!
I have recently been living alone and learning new recipes. Spices pretty much overwhelm me because there's a lot of foreign names and I didn't know where to start. I found myself wishing for a guide of the flavor and uses of each. This came in a perfect time. Thank you so much. I've downloaded the printable and it's exactly what I needed!
I just read an article the other day wherein it doesn't matter organic, country or spice - in the states, consumer reports just put this out "Your Herbs and Spices Might Contain Arsenic, Cadmium, and Lead" and gave a whole list of grocery stores and brands that are toxic. So, off to the garden I go, planting herbs and will store them by fall - just more work for the consumers
When I was a college student just starting to cook for myself and working with a tight budget, I'd save up to buy a new spice jar once a month or so. Back in those days, I used to love looking at my spice rack and using it as the base and inspiration for whatever I'd cook rather than being driven my larger ingredients. I came up with some interesting combinations that I still love today about 10 years later. So glad the Pick Up Limes team gets this and is spreading the word cause I often find not enough people explore spices as they should. Cinnamon is certainly my #3 spice after salt and pepper too.
Speechless in front of this magnificent introduction! To the persons who have filmed and edited this video with these new visual tools: you've made my heart beat with joy during the entire video ❤️✨ Passion for the craft 😌
I love this video so much! 😊
This is honestly one of my favorite things about your food videos: you dive deep into subjects. I like it so much more when you actually go over the details and share quality information , not just share a tasty yet somehow less detailed recipe.I love the science, the evidence as well as your artsy approach and always soothing. Btw, I like the new animations a lot. Your content just makes me happy! Thank you Sadia and your team

Unpopular practice: I actually use spices for years and years and I've never had throw them away! They do lose some nutrients and flavor, but they are still super aromatic, it's pointless to get rid of them if they didn't go bad. Give them a chance!

Totally agree. I do exactly the same. I even prefer to buy herbs in large packages rather than small ones, because it's cheaper and (therefore) I like to use them often.
