Great drill and video! In the early days in Special Forces, they used to teach us to count our rounds and reload before slide lock. Easy to do on the flat range, but during CQB almost impossible. I've only trained with Ken one time, but would jump at the chance again if he ran another class.

Its a drill people. It isn't testing how fast you can run. It is making you count shots which adds a "calculation" factor into the training. And, no, he and I are not saying you should count your shots in a SD situation.

Seems like a good drill idea, especially the " only reload when youre empty" part. Too many ppl are concerned with range games and think that stuff like that matter in a sd situation. Bringing me to my only real issue other than the particular pistol being used ( ill adress that at below) is with "scoring" hits. I understand you are trying to become more acurate and are challenging yourself but 3 -5 hits to the torso will put anyone on the dirt, and if you are practicing FOR a sd encounter worrying about " score" is a waste of valuble time that could be the difference between death and survival. I like the idea of hard pass/fail drills as score is irrelevant in the real world, and an attacker or attackers isnt going to wait around for you to get a perfect sight picture while you are engaging his partner. If youre using targets like idpa, or any basic torso and head any hit "right now" is 100x more valuable than a perfect shot half a second later. like i said i do like this drill, but it needs to shed the "range game" aspects. As to the gun chosen- Im not going to bash on 1911s( much) or 9mm,single stack guns, or even the use of a "mid size" pistol (ive just never understood the compromise; all the problems of carrying a large pistol, along with those that come from a sub-compact, seems like giving up alot for very, very little net gain. again just an option and not one shared by most people) and i dont care if hipoint named a model after me id still carry it just because it had my name on it so i get that, but my issue is with using the "classic" 1911 design. Specifically a model that uses a barrel bushing. Why in the age of ramped barrels would you use a gun that has a very important part that is know to get "worn out"? I know thays how they were originally made but that doesnt mean we have to ignore mordern improvements. Ive seen quite a few people have their bushing either crack, come loose, and once fly off with his spring cup downrange. Yes of course you could never see this problem by having good maintenance habbits and replace them frequently but why bother when there is just a better option?

May I suggest that you find and watch some actual videos of assailants sustaining even more than 3-5 hits and continuing to press the attack, even after having sustaining one or more eventually fatal wounds. Even a heart shot will allow some people up to around 10 seconds to pursue the attack. Try it yourself. With a dummy pistol, start counting to 10, and see how many different people you can aim at and pull the trigger, even if you have to reload, before the 10 seconds is up. It's very enlightening!!

I hate IDPA and USPSA for one reason. I don't believe any shooter should have prior knowledge of how the range is set up. In other words I think everyone should go in blind you have no idea how many shots are going to be you have no idea of anything prior to starting. if you want to see the reality of life because we can't plan what's really going to happen in real life you would see Tom go through the roof drastically if they applied this.

I know this drill as Haley 1-5. (As in Travis Haley) I can put 15 shots in the 8" circle in 12 seconds with no time penalties. The trick is to fire from the trigger reset, not move your arms but rotate your hips and have a shot cadence in your head.

If you like hat try this one know as a revers Badger. Using two mags 10 rounds total with one reload using four targets designated as P1, P2, P3, P4 at 7 yards engage ATB : P1, P1, P2, P1, P2, .P3, P1, P2,, P3 ,,P4 a good time would be under 10 seconds and shooting targets out of order is a 10 procedural penilty. this will mes with you mind

I try to get out to the range close by.about once a week. 5 rds 2 mags and switch up round count in mags each session. Do a blind grab and load on the mags.plus the one in mags holder. 2 targets spaced apart and at different distance. my constancy is pretty solid.and my monthly range trip(150 rds) is when I try to tighten my groups with some more challenging drills and targets.(3 different ones each has a different challenge to it) I try not to do the practice drill in same order each trip.

I've always heard if there is an external hammer, it is a "slide release," and can be used as such, and if it does not have an exposed hammer (striker fire) then it's a "slide stop" and you should use the slingshot method.

  • @cbrooks2767

@@carrottoponcrak Slingshot method is a one-size-fits-all universal method. But if your gun has a slide stop lever that is easy to use like Ken's then use it because it's faster. Train with it enough and it becomes a no brainer automatic action.

I'm a fan of the 1911, and I know it requires more maintenance and upkeep. My only 'problem' with the 9mm 1911's is that I find a loose cartridge in my pocket occasionally, or if I rack a round in to carry plus 1 and remove the magazine to top it off, I'll have the round fall out of the gun. Or, I'll take a magazine out and find the top round is halfway out and sticking up. Had this happen with Kahr CW9, and with Ruger Lightweight Commander in 9mm. Anyone else have this problem or know of a fix? Doesn't happen with my G30s or other pistols. I like 45 auto and have no problem carrying it, but want to see if I can carry a 9mm without these issues that cause me to not trust the 9mm 1911 system.
