Fairly certain the destroy ending takes out Shepard as well? you are mostly machine by that point...makes more sense then surviving for no reason.

@@GrimNightengale It may. It's why that close up shot of a body with wrecked N7 armor taking a sudden breath is done. It could be anything. Could be a Shepard coming to consciousness briefly for dying amidst the rubble. Could be a Shepard that goes on to survive. Could be some other soldier with the same rank just there to tease us with. It's basically a 'could be anything' ending there to let the player decide just how much hope they have left.

@@caad5258 he does it shows all the chars that gave their lives and the middle has Anderson and shep in that part played the game so many times over the yrs i remember every death as if they were real life friends the entire series was one that brought me to tears so many times that i had to stop many times due to crying over a loss of a char wether a crew member or not the hardest one for me was legion when you get both the geth and the quarian's in the final battle the exchange between him and tali brought me to tears

This'll be an amazing ending. I've always imagined a scenario where Joker smashes the Normandy into the Crucible control room via the Thanix Cannons just as Shepard shoots the Destroy Conduit. Then your romance interest picks you up and carries you into the Normandy which goes into FTL just as the Destroy Field builds up. I never imagined the memorial wall sequence though and this is an amazing imagining of that. Gives Shepard an emotional response to coming to terms with Anderson's death, he always felt like a father figure to Shepard for me personally. Seeing your Shepard hug Garrus brings tears to my eyes. And that final shot of the Normandy is amazing. Feels reminiscent of Mass Effect's ending with the SR1 going onto its next adventure.

Never did the destroy ending simply because the origins of the reapers show that you're just committing genocide of the Geth, the Reapers and Edi just to delay the inevitable next AI uprising for a few centuries. Plus you discover each reaper by this point is a living library of millions of years of evolution and society.

We might be seeing BioWare declaring a cannon ending to Mass Effect 3 so that they can start Mass Effect 4. (My guess is that it takes place in a world where Liara is searching for the Shepard AI, or she brings Shepard back through her research into the Lazarus project.)

It’s a little more complicated then that. EA originally wanted to ME3 to abruptly stop so the end could be sold as dlc, which was the also the plan for Dragon Age 2, but the backlash against DA2 lead EA to cancel that dlc (EA not giving players what they want and blaming them for it) and BioWare had rework the ending without any additional time or resources.

Yeah I never got why writers are so scared of having "happy endings". Like you can still have suffering and loss but end with an uplifting finale which see's main characters survive. The original Star Wars Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings are the A+ standard for good endings. The "happy" aspects feel earned.

Just to be clear; it's not BioWare or the writer's fault. They needed more time to wrap up the game properly and write proper endings, but EA pushed for the game to be released sooner than it was ready. EA is to blame for the crappy endings; not the writers. BioWare's writers did what they could to give us a good ending, but they were extremely limited with the time they had.

100% agree with you. I don't even mind Shepard dying tbh, I just really wanted to give the middle finger to the starkid and it's fucked up logic. After all the effort I made to get organics and synthetics to work together and learning that they can, indeed interact in a positive manner, I just couldn't take the whole bs that "the only way they can get along is by rewriting their dna and making them something in between". Like, for real? Screw being a better person and understanding someone different than you, only way to make things right is changing everyone's dna and making them physically similar. Tbh, an ending where organics and synthetics were given a chance to make things better than the cycles before without reaper interference (reaper interference including control ending, shepard wasn't perfect and would still fuck up at some point while having mecha squid god army) would be the most satisfying to me. Maybe it will go horribly wrong and they will just destroy each other in war, but we have enough reasons to believe they won't. So we get a hopeful ending, not a perfect one, were there will be still problems and conflicts, but with a real chance of a more positive than negative outcome. After all, the series has aways been about fighting against impossoble odds. Can't we end it with fighting the "impossible odd" of the reaper's logic that organics and synthetics can't get along? Seems fitting to me.

@@cookiesareawesome7212 for the controll ending shepherd is perfect though. Throughout my campaign I did everything perfectly. So In turn shepherd is damn near as close to perfect as you can get. I did not choose the controll ending but shepherd is probably the best choice in the galaxy for that ending.

For the Legendary Edition why didn't they just add a ending where the Reapers are destroyed and Shepherd lives... simple no other shit

I was angry at the endings the first time I played it. Now years later in the LE and after playing them all through again, I am actually satisfied with the destruction ending. Shepard's sacrifice was believable and a good way to end his/her character.

I find it gets a lot better with the addition of Citadel DLC, Arrival DLC, and the extended cut ending. People forget that the original ME3 ending was shipped with just the Normandy crash landing on some unknown planet and that's it! implying that the mass relays were gone forever

I am not a big fan of Destroy and Synthesis ending, I chose the Control ending. For me Destroy is just an option people choose just because Shepard gasps for air when in reality they would not survive injuries. It’s also just a waste! You work through the whole trilogy learning more about synthetics and how they are more than they seem but no I’ll just kill them all. All the work towards peace between Quarians and Geth was just thrown out. They were the biggest example of co existence. Synthesis is just stupid space magic that you would FORCE upon the whole galaxy, altering DNA, yeah no thank you. Control keeps the peace you’ve worked for, in a sense Shepard is immortal through an AI, the AI is protector of the galaxy, and all the destruction including the destroyed mass relays are rebuilt by the controlled Reapers who have vast knowledge of past species.

The only way the trilogy can end in a satisfying way is with the destroy option, period. I've seen the ending so many times but it still hits hard.

@@comradegregori2419 Yea I always go with Synthesis myself. Control is too close to what the Illusive Man wanted so definite no go. Destroy takes out Geth and EDI as well as reapers. Losing EDI is a definite no go! And even with the destroy, there's no guarantee that rogue VI's don't get created at some future point.

Yeah Control is the happy ending no body realizes for some reason. Yeah Shepard dies but he becomes an immortal AI that protects the whole galaxy. Your work throughout the trilogy wouldn’t be a waste. Destroy and Synthesis were such dumb endings

@@Asghaad It kills all synthetics, and the only allies it kills are EDI and the Geth, and thats IF you ally with the Geth (peace or not). The only way the destroy ending kills more than just the Geth, EDI and the reapers is if your EMS is low--then it'll target organics as well. And I have to disagree with your opinion on synthesis. It changes organics and synthetics to understand one another. To put it in the star child's words, "it's the final evolution for organics and synthetics", or something like that. It's not genocide. It brings permanent peace between organics and synthetics that cannot be broken.

In the original ending I have a nonsense issue. When they are putting Shepard's name in the wall why "Commander Shepard" and not the name you've put to the character like John Sheppard or Jane. I mean is nostalgic but is weird because everyone there has his real name except Sheppard.

Well it's more complicated than changing it in texts (emails and such), because here it's textures, it's "drawn" on it So you'd have to manually render every possible name and put it on textures that the game would choose depending on... yeah you see how that wouldn't work I don't know if there'd be another way to do it though

@@Golesh02 Thats cool. Too bad the devs don't have to care about your wants. They wanted to tell a story about war and loss: Those don't have happy endings.

An easy fix to this whole ending mess would have been to use the Reaper IFF system to paint out Reapers from friendly synthetics, allowing the Crucible pulse to only target matching Reaper signatures that are being idenitified by the 'Identify Friend/Foe'. We know it exists, and we've used it before to go through the Omega 4 relay. We also know that the IFF is used for relay travel, which perfectly lines up with the Crucible using the relays as a daisychain for the pulse blast. Is it the best solution? No, but it's a hell of a lot better than the garbage we actually got.

A good ending which Shepard, Crew - hell - even entire Galaxy deserve.

You only never got it if you never read fanfiction. XD I love the various ideas fans had, some people were crazy inventive with how you could make it a happy ending without sacrifice. I went for "Starchild is just a hallucination brought on by Reaper indoctrination and the whole spacewalk thing was imaginary, Shepard realizes, fires the real crucible". Fans are pretty good at fixing bad writing, much like how they rock at modding out bad gameplay elements. :3

We never actually SEE the Geth or EDI dying, they’re just conveniently absent from the wrap up shots at the end. In my FF, Klara Shepard (After Destroy+Paragon+All Resources ending) is found barely alive by the Alliance. After many weeks in coma, she wakes up, in a Galaxy that is recovering. But the trauma is too much: along with Liara (now her wife) Shepard runs away and sets at the borders of the Galaxy, far from everyone EXCEPT her friends. Two years later, Shepard has still to fight with nightmares, guilt and sorrow: she feels responsible for EDI and the Geth. After finding out that Joker has resent from Alliance not going over EDI loss and is now an alcoholic, she has an emotive breakdown. With Liara and her old crew help, she desperately looks for a way to pay amend and rebuild her life.

Unless you think that the breathing at the end is just Bioware trolling, this is what happens off-screen in the High EMS destroy ending. I like JohnP's alternate ending mod because it pretty much leaves the default ending intact, it just shows you things bioware didn't had time to and left implied to have happened offscreen.

Because war, by its nature, can’t have a happy ending.

All they had to do was make it difficult, but not impossible to get this ending: - Make it available only in insanity mode. - you have to follow an specific path, make specific choices during all 3 games. - 80% galactic readiness or more. At the final scene, Sheppard is talking with either Kaiden or Ashley on Earth about the future and what comes next. They both agreed peace won’t last forever, so the Normandy needs to stay vigilant. Your romantic partner (or Sam Traynor if you didn’t romance anyone) will ask you if you are ready to go. Shepard will salute either Kaiden or Ashley and tell them “go get them, commander” to which they response “I won’t let you down, admiral”. Shepard looks as the Normandy (now captained by Kaiden or Ashley) flies away to new adventures in the galaxy. If You romanced Ashley or Kaiden, James will take their place.

The problem with happy ending is that it creates dead content in branching paths. As each and every player will want the "best ending". Even newcomers to the series struggle to continue when important character dies and reloads saves. So what's the point of all the multi-choice and taking into account previous choices if player is still will be encouraged to stick to one optimal path? There is none. The few people like me who go blind and don't consult any walkthroughs and stick with "bad" decisions because they feel authentic at the time are rare. I know very few ME 'veterans' who played to a point where they could convince Mordin to sabotage the cure for example. Why? Because no-one wants to play a game where Wrex dies. Because it's not "happy". Mass effect is pyrrhic victory and it's ok.

This modded ending doesn't have much impact to me compared to the actual endings we have in the game. It was a war that is almost impossible to win so sacrifices will have to be made even at the cost of Shepard's life. If Shepard lives, that breath scene in the destroy ending is much more fitting, leaves a lot to the interpretation of the player.

Despite all your choices, what you did or didn’t do, what class you were, who you loved, who you didn’t save, who you brought along, and what your own history is, the Reapers, and along with it The Cycle, is always bigger. Just like the old adage, we are but a grain of sand on the beach that is the universe. I think that’s the quote. But something like that. What matters is only that choice in the end, and nothing else.

@@Asghaad After the writers EXPLICITLY promised they wouldn't do that either. They told us our cumulative actions throughout the series would shape the ending and it wouldn't just be reduced to a color coded list of binary choices. Guess that was a fucking lie. And the synthetics vs organics theme had no place being the central conflict behind the reapers. Sure elements of that theme were scattered throughout the series. But as far as the Reapers were concerned their actions had nothing to do with directly interfering with organic/synthetic relationships. To make that their primary motivation in the last 5 minutes of gameplay is a slap in the face. Especially with the insane troll logic the Star Child uses. They were supposed to be these eldritch god like beings with inscrutable motives! Or at the very least they could have stuck with the dark matter plot threads from ME2, expanded on that more. But noooo, we have to rip off the Deus Ex franchise! All these years later and I'm still just so disappointed. A travesty of writing.

Unpopular opinion, Shepard dying at the end of ME3 is actually a good thing. First it gives a real end to his story and second, it gives some weight to the end. If at the end the whole crew survive (including Shepard) and they all just live happily ever after, the victory is (for me) almost too simple. I mean, to destroy something like the Reaper, a lot of people will die, and Shepard being one of them, so the soldier that already saved the galaxy twice before ME3, shows that the Reaper are THE true and final threat for the galaxy and that Shepard is willing and ready to do ANYTHING to stop them, even sacrifice himself.

true i mean what else could your char of done throughout the entire series it was you leading the way half the time without being asked and always without reward even your title of spectre was given only so they dont have to deal with the traitor themselves they send you as they know nothing will stop you the rest of the time they laugh and dont belive you about the threat out there then when it returns oh look again its up to you to rally the entire galaxy by giving your life they have to learn to stand together without having one person at the head

Shepard can do the impossible - it’s canon - well, except for survive the final mission.

If you destroy all technology. Destroy the reapers. The final scene shows shepard taking a gasp of air before cutting out

This is too nice, tbh. Even EDI survived. As much as I love the entire crew and all, this ending doesn't feel like hard won victory.

Not only you. Everybody is talking about how ME1 and ME2 were better, but ME1 only had a good plot beggining and ME2 was just a series about Shepard and his crew, yeah the stories of companions were extremely good, but instead of fighting collectors we're banging aliens or solving daddy issues. ME3 has a Tuchanka, Rannoch, Thessia, even a Cerberus base was nice, but a shit ending. Still, its an amazing game, but everybody talking about ending

@Synth I am not bothered at all that the Normandy left as the EC fixed that plot hole and on a 8k+ Destroy ending Shepard could very well end up in a coma to be found by Uncle Urdnot as he is searching for his friend despite protest from everyone else who wasn't part of Shepard crew, cough the System Alliamce brass and other Council races cough, and they find the gravely injured Shepard corpse. And as Wrex informs the Normandy crew of Shepard condition we see him almost tear out and the crew ends up in an almost depressive state with characters like Garrus, Williams and/or Alenko pulling the rest up as much they can despite their attachments. That would have been wild if we got to play as one of them as they guide the Normandy back towards Earth sending messages to Shepard and depending of the help players got on Sol Relay (Lawson sisters, Kahlee Sanders, Ex-Cerberus Scientists, Rachni, etc) Shepard can make as close a recovery before he/she being honorably discharged or end up perishing due to poor player choices. But that would require Bioware re maked the ME3 ending when they could or have the first act in the next ME deal with a post ME3 ending state and then transform into a game set hundreds of years after that event. Better write fan fiction as this is 2021 Bioware.

They really could have given us this ending with the citadel DLC, imagine it, Shepard is given the options, then just as they choose, the Normandy arrives, Joker on the Comms, and Shepard has an idea, using Shepard's clone that was captured instead of killed, to create synthesis, so everyone lives, the only one not to is the evil clone, it would have been perfect, all synthetics and organics get to live, and Shepard gets to survive.

This hurts so bad.....but for the right reason, a epic story....a epic journey coming to a end. A farewell to arms, to one of the greatest stories told.

Doing Jenkins real dirty there.

Hopefully they just let Shephard die in peace in 3 and let us play an alien.

Its simple, Anderson made it to the beam. Shepard took a nap in the rubble. Whatever happen after that, it wasn't the train-wreck we saw.

I understand the need for closure and having shepherd sacrifice themselves for the Galaxy, but it would also be awesome if the next ME still had them alive. Maybe even with kids depending on your romance choice. If the destruction if the reapers is canon (I think that's the canon choice) then the next game could easily be localized in the SOL system with the relays destroyed. All the aliens near earth fighting when the relays went down and reset the entire system to where you only have sublight to travel. Could make a star trek type exploration to find new worlds and resources

If you play as custom fem Shepard and allow Kaiden to live on Virmire, you don’t deserve this ending.

The last game I played that got me really attached to it was TWD, until I played this game series, in which there was no greater excitement for me than when I witnessed Shepeard take another breath after the cutscene was over.

Jenkins are confirmed protagonist for ME5, he still wanna see a real action.

It would have been nice to have had this ending. A little less blood in her face would also not have been a bad idea I think...keep the scars though. (the others look fine so this is obviously a few days if not weeks later) but other than that this would have been THE ending everybody would have been happy (or at least happiest) with. Having her put Anderson's name up there is just as good as one of the crew putting Shepards name up. Having both names up there could always have been the 'worse' ending.

If you play the destruction ending right Sheperd is alive at the end that's why they don't put his/her name on the wall

if you do really well and choose the sixth ending (i.e. sheppy gains biotics (and deadpool fourthwall breaking) and gets god of war angry and starts killing all the reaper's one by one without a space suit while getting the player six extra hours of gameplay and quipping about how this should not be an ending and half life three will never come out and stating that she does not care about this fact because they are sunset overdrive level powerful) you could aspire to get this ending [even I can't tell if this is just over the top or 'deadpool kills marvel' over the top] edit I have seen pretty much all the endings except one and I am striving for that one
