This is one of the best designs Maserati had. I'd consider it timeless.

I have got mine 4200 for two years now(52000 miles). I have changed the clutch, fly wheel, f 1 sensor, and clutch bearing, all cost me 4000 euro incl. service. So far 15000 miles, no problem, engine is perfect.

Glad to see more people realising that the F1 is actually very good. I did a video on my channel a while ago about myths of the F1 because it’s so misunderstood and has been trashed by so many KZreadrs over the years. You have to realise it’s a manual gearbox so it’s not going to perform like a slush box. Hope you continue to enjoy the 4200!

Great video - you really have to give these cars a chance. Maserati is NOT for everyone. While it’s not a Ferrari - it does have a lot of parts from the “Ferrari” bin…if you plan on keeping the car add the Formula Dynamics drive by wire and the shifting and clutch engagement is night and day. I also own a 1997 Bentley Turbo R, fast powerful and not for everyone….you really have to understand what a Maserati is and what it is for. A country jumping, very high speed cruising machine that really can cruise effortlessly at 170+ without adding turbos. This era of Maserati’s and even the Quatrroporte will be sought after at some point due to the passion, heritage and sound the Germans lack. Funny, again, people by low priced examples of these cars and trash talk them….come drive my GranSport that is mint…and it just might recalibrate your thought on Maserati. Am what is Maserati = high speed effortless cruising, last of the normally aspirated V8s. The gear box is very similar to that of a 360. There are countless parts in my engine bay that say Ferrari/Maserati. I bought this car because it’s a Maserati, not because it’s the closest thing to a Maserati. My friends, look up the MC12 and then obviously the MC20….Maserati is back.

The 4200/gransport isn't the best representation of maserati. Rubbish gear box, expensive clutches on a car that does not retail like a ferrari. Granturismo, the new v8 biturbo trofeo qp's/gh, mc12/mc20 are their best cars. The only problem with the mc20 no v8 biturbo.

@@jonnysl6560 4200/gransport is a poor mans maserati. Gear box is rubbish and slow. Thats why the e92/e93 m3's and w204 c63s from that era were not only superior looking/performing cars but held value better. mc12/ Granturismo onwards was the real maserati's

I think you’re wrong here pal. Ferrari had a major hand in the design and build of this car. It shares a lot of parts from Ferrari. I own one….the majority of the parts say Ferrari/Maserati…which isn’t a big deal. I purchased mine new and still have it. Since then, I’ve added several modifications. I’d encourage you to drive one if you ever have the chance. This video, although very good, doesn’t do it 100% justice. Behind the wheel is where you need to judge this car from. Hope you’re well.

Great video. I recently bought a 2006 GranSport and absolutely love it. I really like the gearbox and the feel you get from it. I find this still gives that mechanical feel when changing gears, unlike dual clutch transmissions that, while they offer super fast shifts, doesn’t have that same mechanical feel. Downshifts in sport mode are epic. Can’t think of a car that has the class, style, sound, performance and practicality of it for anywhere near the money. My 2c

Love these cars! We have a 2005 Spyder CC. I’ve definitely noticed that “lurch” every time I upshift even in sport mode. I always drive in manual too. I’m most likely gonna buy the DBW kit from Formula Dynamics which I hope improves that.

I have a 2016 Gran Turismo, I have owned one other Maserati (a 2014 QP) and a few Ferrari leases over the last 20 years. For the F1 gearbox, you want it to be in sport mode and to shift manually as it will preserve the clutch life; in some cases the clutches can last over 40,000 miles if it is properly taken care of (and not abused), though most owners report 10,000-15,000 miles clutch life. Keep it hooked up to a CTEK battery charger when you are not driving it, enjoy the F136 V8.

Doesn't seem like it was that bad at all. Reminds me a lot of the e-gear/r-tronic in terms of how quickly it shifts etc. I bet a TCU tune or a direct stradale swap would have made it even snappier. So awesome.

I own/drive a 2004 GT manual. Manual box feels like an afterthought. Never driven a Cambiocorsa but given the choice I'd probbaly stick to the manual, its quirky, takes a while to get used to, need to drive at least 30 minutes before doing anything daring like ,1st to 2nd 😂. But it's an italian car, its fast, looks good, gets endless looks and compliments,. In the UK my car is worth maune £12k. When I drive it to work, in a car full of £20k+ Euroboxes mine gets so many looks.

One of the best interiors and exteriors from that price point in the history of the auto industry with the north care and upkeep in the right wheels on it easily the top 20 pseudo Modern vehicle of all time minus any downsides of maintenance and a lackluster gear box that everyone talks about

For that mileage that’s a pretty good price, if you have another car to drive when it breaks then I say go for it because parts are hard to get and they take a couple weeks sometimes

  • @StephenGross-hg8pn

Anyone can afford these cars. The problem stems from the technical know how and where to get the parts. You can’t just go to Napa or Autozone…a lot of people say what you say, buy the car, trash it and not maintain it properly….then they get a bad wrap. Chances are, if you buy this, you won’t make your money back….but if you do buy it, drive it and maintain it….good luck.

Maserati provided performance driving classes for these cars... . I sold my Ferrari 328 for 40.000 my 355 for 50.000 both over time went up in price. My Maserati 4200 will do the same as it's the last real Maserati. It's important not to forget that the engine of this car is from the Ferrari 430 but with a different set up. I don't really care if it goes up in price as I won't ever be selling mine, ever.

I am in the same boat my friend. The only parts this engine shares is the block from the four-thirty…that’s it…nothing else. The transmission/F1 is from the 355 or 360 I believe. Ferrari did build and design this engine.
