ULEZ does not apply to Private Cars. The definition of motor vehicle that they use includes passenger carrying vehicle in the context of minibus/taxi/private hire, where a passenger is someone who pays for a ride. This is the general legal definition of passenger in Blacks Law Dictionary and it concurs with the Road Traffic Act 1988 from where the statutory definition is derived. it does not include Private Car. (RTA 1988 S.121 interpretation).

Friends - I’ve owned mine since 2007…and she’s equipped with all the Formula Dynamics goodies. If anyone buys one of these - here are a few tips: 1. Buy the Formula Dynamics drive by wire enhancement. The clutch will engage and shift 10x better. Always drive it in sport mode. 2. Replace the secondary decats with either Larini “decats” or “Sport” cats. The current setup really robs the car of power and sound. If you look under the current, the pipes are “squashed” and look like someone has “kneeled” on the pipe….I have the decats and you can really feel the difference in the power and sound. Also, buy either the Larini or Tubi rear back boxes for even more sound. 3. This car is a GT not a sports car. I’d recommend updating the front and rear sway bars and lowering the car…makes a huge difference. 4. ECU upgrade - this car already pulls hard…but, the ECU upgrade makes it pull like a scolded dog. 5. Maintenance - ok, honestly, yes, very high maintenance costs…but, buy what you need in advance and plan for it and maintenance is no more than a BMW/Audi/Mercedes. 6. Bad rep - the 4200 and GranSport are, very very very good cars. A lot of haters have no real clue about what this car is…it’s a blast to drive, gets attention and has a killer engine. 0-60 4.6 - 4.7 and top speed over 180 mph. 7. Join the Maserati Life Forum - a lot of very helpful people on there. 8. Ok CLUTCH - yes, this is a big expense…but, if you buy the parts in advance, and you learn how to drive this car with the Drive by wire…you can get 40k + miles on the clutch…. Don’t be scared. 9. Ferrari stickies - yes, a problem that plagues all Maserati 4200/GranSports…I’ve been able to find a guy who fixes all of this on the Forum..it’s worth it. 10. Drive this car, maintain it…rev it hard (she loves to rev) just change fluids and be prepared to never wipe the smile off your face.

Amen brother (or sister). They are a great car. Have been toying with the idea of DBW but James’ review has turned me off somewhat - more research is needed here. Looking at the decat pipes so hopefully can do that soon. Clutch is approaching its useful life so will look at the 430 or quattroporte clutch (meant to last much longer). I love driving mine on weekends (usually early mornings so I’m back before traffic picks up) but can understand the frustrations of driving one daily and dealing with its “quirks”.

The DBW is a must have and will help with clutch life as it engages the clutch faster….gears 2-6 really slam into gear.

I really miss my 53 plate 4200, had to go due to Covid and work issues, I was getting 19 MPG on a run and about 16 MPG doddling about, that was until I changed the MAF sensor for a genuine Maserati part, I found the previous owner had cheaped out and fitted a Volvo one😮 Made a bit of difference and MPG went up to an amazing 23 MPG ! Mine was a six speed manual and I never had any issues with it, well built and amazingly reliable 😊 God I miss that car ❤

Just past the intro and my thoughts are these; I’d rather regret things hadn’t turned out the way I’d hoped than regret never trying. In February I got my ‘08 650i. It is not the “most” anything, and some consider it ugly and it has its share of design flaws that afflict most mid-00’s BMW (and car makers in general). It is my first car as I’ve made do with motorcycles thus far. Because of this I wanted something special, and I have always liked the 6-Series, and I feel in love with my car almost instantly when I looked at it. Just after I got it, I drove down to the south coast from the midlands to see friends on my first big journey with the car, and on the way home, late at night, it hit me. This was MY car, fully bought and paid for. I owed no-one a penny for it. And I’ll admit, I teared up a bit, because it was a special moment for me. I don’t care it’s not the greatest at anything and even a bit “slow” today (Trust me, it’s only slow by bike standards!) Has it been perfect? No, it’s a mid-00’s BMW with a very complex engine. Is it expensive to run? Yes, although better than one might expect. Do I regret buying it? Not even for a second. I might keep it for a few years, I might keep it until it has to be scrapped, but I can say I bought the car my heart wanted. But I fully understand the need to drive to Scotland to test the theory. It’s all for scientific endeavour.

Just had to lose my 4200 due to minor crash damage 😢 the insurance offer was double what I paid for it... the price for super unleaded is at £1.71, and at best 15mpg, and head ruled over heart - (this video doesn't help). I bought it at £1.46 ppl with £120 tank fill... went for a Jag XJ6 and the rest goes on home improvements - its the head again, but my heart, well, turn up the volume!

Owning a running a dry ice cleaning company, Maseratis are some of the worst constructed cars chassis wise I’ve seen. The rust on cars used in the UK weather is insane. Compared to a Porsche or other marques at this price point it almost reminds me of a kit car

In my inner circle that delve with toys, figures and model kits, we always have a saying "Better regret buying it than regret not buying it". Shame to see the GranSport going away, but very much understandable. Hope to see more Maserati in your garage (an MC Strad or maybe another Quattroporte Sport GTS...?) since not many youtubers want to give Maserati a chance to prove themselves. Also, can I just appreciate how you went into great details about things you like and dislike as well as why a certain car works - or in this case, doesn't work - for you. Great consumer advice, giving people chances to make well-informed choices when they want to buy cars (even if, like me, many probably can't afford one).

Loved this video! As a ‘05 Coupé GT (manual) owner I think you’re spot on with your comments (except for the ride comfort which I find bone shaking in normal mode!). I just did a 1000 mile road trip last month and got 21 MPG with a lot of 70mph Swiss motorway miles. I also find it quite noisy in 6th at this RPM (probably exacerbated by road surface). You were lucky with your CoC, I had to pay Maserati a lot of €€ for mine. Re. the ground clearance, it’s a pity the GranSport is 10mm lower than the Coupé. I’m sad it’s going to depart the channel after such a short time.

A fantastic well-rounded overview of the GS! There's no better way to really get to know a car than a big road trip. Having just sold my 2004 4200, ironically to a nice chap in Scotland. I can't say I fully gelled with it but surprisingly I do miss it and can't help feeling one day we might see these start to be looked upon more favourably and perhaps even climb in price. All the best, Matt.

I have a 4200, due to the "sticky dash issue" I had no idea it had a sport mode button, I thought that manual mode was sport mode and was worried about the slow gear change. I few weeks back I discovered by accident the offending switch.. not know what any of them do due to no markings I was a little apprehensive to just press hem all until something happened. Having now driven it in sport mode Im totally in love with it and now only drive in sport mode regardless of the harder suspension.. I LOVE IT. Everybody I know warned me about the electrical problems and Maserati tax but given I paid only $26000 NZD for a car that has travelled less than 40k miles I'm pretty impressed

Your reasons are fair and as always an accurate assessment. I have the spyder and I often wonder about the decision. Then I wash and drive it. A really big issue to consider is what else has the same capabilities and look and feel for the same cost. The closest is a 997 Porsche which is common as mud by comparison and I have an SC that I prefer as my Porsche. It is a 2nd or 3rd car at best for those of us that can't afford Ferraris. A glorious Italian car which I will now go and wash, drop the top and enjoy the sun and sound.

Thanks for the review James and sorry it wasn’t for you. I was really looking forward to some decent KZread GranSport content over the next 6-12 months as it is surely lacking at the moment. I bought an 06 GS around 6 months ago and am totally in love with it. Mine isn’t a daily - it is a weekender and it is usually just me or +1 in it. For me, it’s perfect, but could understand how using it as a daily could be frustrating. I wonder if you could mod out any of the issues and give it a second chance? Oh and good to know about the DBW….that was on my list but may bypass it now. Anyway, thanks for the vid and keep up the great work!

My understanding is in order to enjoy a Ferrari or Maserati you must drive it hard particularly the early F1 transmission models @ over 3k rpms in sport mode. Honestly you told yourself in the episode of the Mercedes C63 that it was the car you should have gotten. Currently running a 2009 Estate example and my only gripe is the 66l tank. I've seen conversions to make it 90l which is what it should have had from the get go. Also definitely for the early 7spd cars get the shift speed upgraded to match the SLS. As it transforms the car. Still uber smooth in comfort, but turns into a right animal when the TC is off and the shifts start going through just a hair shy of an RS3's DQ500 box.

Still the best intro music! Never a big fan of this Maser, but the spec you have is very lust worthy. That sound - an Italian muscle car! Love it! Excellent find! Btw, similar MPG as my old ‘05 CLK55. I preferred to measure in SPG (smiles per gallon).

Put about 20,500 miles in seven years on my 4200 Cambiocorsa. Got it in November 2013 with 42,200 miles. Put about 500-100 miles on it then stored it in Florida for 11 months. Started right up when I got back and I immediately did oil change, but within a 1000-1500 miles clutch totally failed. Looked at paperwork and saw clutch lasted about 17-18,000 miles. Dealership in S. FL said they couldn't work on it for three weeks so took it to a specialist. Mistake. This time clutch lasted 13,000 miles. Otherwise small things kept going wrong, 5 disc CD player, purge valve, alternator, dash button to open gas cap. Dealership left the car out in the broiling sun for days and glue for leather headliner melted as did dash buttons etc, etc. Clutch went again after 13K miles. Then variators went. Ka-ching! BTW, this car had at least $25K of work done on it by last previous owner including FD drive by wire and ECU enhancement software. I did keep up with the expensive annual maintenance $1500-$1800. Then Jan 2021 I replaced tires and brought into dealership for alignment. They had just completed annual maintenance and variator work not long before. They then informed me that car had serious axle and corrosion problems to undercarriage. Estimated $40,000 to repair. Within a week I was in new leased F-type!

In regards to the suspension when fully loaded with people/gear, looking at the GVM (at least in Australia) you only have 380kg of payload (GVM - Kerb Mass, 2060kg-1680kg). So with 3 people and all of the luggage you may have been getting close to GVM.

The fuel economy can probably be attributed to the transmission. No torque converter to lock up while cruising and lower the revs. Also 20mpg isn’t *that* bad all things considered

I owned a 4200 spyder for 2 years - did 12,000 miles in it. While it was somewhat flawed, it is without doubt the car I look back on most fondly. I've had 911's, Boxsters, S2000, M4 and while they were all great, and in some ways more capable, the Maserati made me feel a way the others never did. Fantastic car (if you can stomach 15mpg!)

It’s an interesting point about onboard weight. I wonder whether there is ( was) an industry standard for testing . This is particularly prevalent when considering you are asked to inflate tyres when your carrying 5 and luggage…. Presuming you inflated for your trip to Scotland, how would this weight as you mentioned bottoming out etc impact other systems ABS breaking distances etc ???

I've got it booked in for Feb though to have it all done in one go. Putting some 18" wheels on it instead of the silly 20" wheels as well which will improve the ride and I bet it will reduce the unsprung weight a hell of a lot at the same time.
