That was the year she went through both Williams sisters...don't sleep on Martina...she could play back in her day, but later that year, Richard wasn't having it...he took his girls and went to boot camp with them and perfected their power game to where they were dominant of the WTA from Wimbledon all the way to 2003. They became faster, more confident and hit the balls unbelievably hard and it threw Martina out of her comfort zone. I do miss Martina playing, very smart player.

Hingis the most naturally gifted player to ever take the court ahead of Goolagong, Evert and Henin.

Tell her to win a GS, to reach No.1 for one year, and be inducted into the Hall of Fame first. Then, you can move on comparing them.

It was really absurd. Hingis lost to Capriati, and then you'd think Venus would win just look at her ground strokes.. so powerful, and out. oh well, I still wish Martina would've won the finals :D

Wow 6_1 6_1 , Venus must have been having a bad day, Hingis deserves lot of credit beating both sisters back to back. She was probably worn out when she faced Capriati in the final and lost.

her game worked because she is phenomenal at taking the ball early, possibly one of the great of all time at doing so. the current best active player i can think of that generally hits the ball on the rise is jie zheng

i remember watching this thinking that venus could not lose, she had been so dominent from wimbledon the previous summer. Hingis losing to capriati in the final was even more absurd though.

I don't think Hingis was just pushing ball back - she really manoeuvres her opponents around like a chess player. Both are clearly great players, but Hingis proved, in contrast to the majority of the current crop of players, that you don't just have to win with power and searing groundies. Please let this kind of tennis come back to the women's game!

How could Henin, short, but still such a talented player could ever overcome the likes of Serena on a daily basis? You can't compete with those muscles and her ability to run for every single shot. Players like Graff and Hingis were plagued by injuries. Look at Martina played forever, but she had great physics. Look at Nadal such a great player, but his Knee injuries may stop him from competing at the highest level.

You should hear these comments with caution. It is all politics being played. Evert would never say Graff or Martina is the greatest player in history. Simply because Graff subdued her and She had a rivalry with Martina. Venus was never as talented as Serena.To say that Serena wins just base on talent is the same as saying to me that Hingis, Henin, Radwanska are not talented players when they clearly are. But physics and muscles play a big role in tennis. Her athleticism is the difference

That loopy forehand of Hingis seemed to bother Venus a lot here. But it's not really effective.

volvariella Hingis forehand was a little flaky around this time. She started to put more pace on it in 06 and had done so earlier in her career but I got flaky 01, 02. The Greg Norman of tennis in a way still good enough to choke a few times during that time in finals of GS tournaments. Like Greg also won all the time on tour but choked in majors

It was good enough to beat Serena and Venus back to back, though.

Venus looked Rusty at this tournament from the get-go. Got a little better with each round but there was no way she was going to beat an in-form Martina Hingis playing like this. Having said that I did not expect Hingis to lose in the final to Capriati, but Jennifer played much better than Venus and Serena did in this tournament.

Isn't crazy?, Venus had just won Wimbledon, Gold at the Olympics, AND the U.S. open, and she defeated Hingis at the two previous majors...I don't know what happened.

Hingis groundstrokes are not powerful but not weak either

This was.a.beatdown plain and simple...i'm a Williams fan all the way never like hingis but love her game..but everyone forgets Venus beat hingis at the Miami open that year in straight sets.and Venus won 2001 miami open also the usopen and willimbton.

Zachary Hall Hingis was a great player if not mentally fragile. Needed tony roach to coach her after steffi french open

I.watch all of venue's matches and she was just terrible she played long three setters it was just bad tennis slot of enforced errors but she kept getting away with it until she ran into hingis...but I still did not think venus would lose and especially not.like that like WOW what a beat down..but it's funny because at the 2001 miami open venus beat hingis in straight sets venus also won wilbmton and the usopen that year..she also won stanford and knew have and the wta.year end championships that year hingis never.made it to another grand slam final...besides 2002 Australian open final..what a turn

This is what happens when you are hellbent on blasting Martina Hingis off the court. In a way, a very naive and immature performance by Venus. At one point the German commentator said, "to play good tennis you have to use your head, too!". Venus wanted to simply overwhelm Martina, went for broke on every shot .. and paid dearly for it.

Venus played awful that day....

What did Hingis in this match? Almost nothing...she was only pushing the ball on that day but it was more than enough. Venus played awful :(

I know something about Tennis and this highlight shows how awful this match was and also I watched it live! I like Venus so I felt very sorry for her. And about your shut up to me...this is just mediocre
