Hingis was so consistent with her ground strokes. Just a overall solid tennis player who felt comfortable anywhere on the court.

I've always felt 1999 Hingis should have won more than 1 slam that year.

In my opinion she could won all 4 that year she was sooooo strong and confident but RG took her out definitely. Imagine the confidence boost at Wimbledon if she could complete carrier slam. What at disaster for her it was at All England Club. She came back and played after that some great matches like this one, than vs Venus at Us Open, again vs Venus at Grand Slam Cup (nevermind she lost that one), vs Pierce at Fildestadt and again vs Venus at Chase Championship and won some titles like this one, Du Marier, Fildestadt but she wasn't the same never again. Even when she was again on top form in 2000 she couldn't win the slam right because of that. Feel sorry for her Martina was always my favorite.

Failed Comeback? She won 3 titles and Made the Quarterfinals of the Australian open twice and The French Open. In 2002 she almost won the Australian open holding match points. Do you even know tennis!?!?!

I love how the highlights are always edited so it looks like a Williams is winning. I think this clip had about 6-1 Venus winning points and she got blown off the court.

You don't remember 2002 too well. She lost her last 3 matches to Serena (starting from 2001 U.S Open) 2 of the 3 by brutal scores where she only got 4 games. She lost over 75% of her matches with Davenport from about mid 98 onwards. Her final ever win over Venus was at the 2001 Australian Open, she never beat her again until her retirement in late 2002. She lost her last FOUR matches to Capriati, yes she should have won that 02 Australian Open final but still that was her 4th straight loss to her. She even lost to baby Clijsters in 1 of their last 2 matches in 2001, and also had a loss to baby Henin. An old Seles beat her a couple times in late 2001. So she was being driven out of the game by the power players by the end. Yes in 99-2000 she was still decently competitive with them although starting to have lots of problems with them, but by 2001-2002 she was being really overun by them completely. The 2001 Australian Open was her last truly impressive event ever, and even there she lost to Capriati in straight sets in the final. 2002 Australian was depleted with Davenport and Serena out, and lots of upsets, she had a piss easy draw to the final and a very sluggish Capriati in the final and still lost after 4 match points so I don't count that as very impressive. And her final ever slam was the 99 Australian Open, she never won another slam the final almost 4 years of her career, nor in her 2 year comeback. Those are facts, sounds to me like someone having trouble keeping up with the big hitters. Steffi Graf even won her final slam after Martina won hers.

problem with venus sometimes is that she hits too many balls down the middle. this causes her to play defense against people she has no business defending against

Another humiliation. Martina never got beatdowns from top players, the worst she got was routine wins. On the other hand she beat badly a lot of top players many times.

@hrhsam yup, too bad for her, cause it took the wind out of her sails and she never won another big title (except YEC2000). On the other hand, the crowd went way too far and realized it when Martina spoke in a nearly flawless French after the match, something Graf has never managed to do (not one correct sentence in more than 15 years there). And Graf could have also made a sign to ask the crowd to quiet down, but was too happy cause it enabled her to win

This was the last of Hingis at her best, she came close again at US open 00, some flashes during aussie seasons 01, and especially 02, but Capriati was too strong for her in the end.

When Venus started learning how to place the balls away from Hingis, that was when she was winning. This was a learning time for venus. 1999. 2000 onwards when venus is on, she was unbeatable.

You know you need to go watch tennis a bit... losing love and love is not only a beatdown... depending on the trend of the match even a 6-4 6-4 defeat could be termed a beatdown. depending on how the game went! Mere numbers dont mean a thing.. Have you watched matches where someone loses 6-2 6-3 and yet you actually see how tough the matches have been ? Just a mere few advantage points here and there have made the difference. PLEASE GROW UP and stop just supporting your players!

Hingis was only on top of the WTA for two years from 1997 to 1999 after 1999 she did NOT win another slam the Williams Sisters, Davenport, Capriati, ect. the other power players become more consistent and just overpowered Hingis forcing her into retirement.
