Wait, are you telling me as a martial arts instructor that you and your students don’t walk the streets at night in karate uniforms looking to start trouble with gangs of wing chun nerds? I don’t know man… if that’s not normal, what am I doing with my life?

Bruce was once asked during an interview how he would feel facing an opponent with a knife. He shook his head and said he would pity his opponent because a man with a weapon becomes fixated on the weapon and loses sight of the rest of his natural weapons. I've wondered if the shaking of his head when the nunchucks came out was a nod to that interview.

That's how I was taught to hold them for better control, but the real Bruce Lee held nunchucks clear down at the bottom for more power. I wore my karate gi to a restaurant (slightly fancier than a diner but not much) once, and to corner shops a few times... but this was when I was a preteen karate student with Dad taking me to those places on the way home from lessons, not wearing it just to show off that I do karate. Also I didn't pick fights with other styles to try and prove mine was better. My approach was - and still is - trying to show my opponent concepts their art doesn't teach, and trying to see things in their moves that I wasn't learning at my dojo. Unless someone's actively trying to cause harm, the goal of a fight is to teach and learn, not to win or lose.

The light kick was originally done by Bruce Lee in a television series. The series was The Green Hornet, Bruce wore a mask and was the Green Hornet's driver. There was going to be a fight scene in a basement or warehouse and Bruce improvised the overhead light kick just as the fight was going to start. I enjoyed the first 2 Ip Man movies more than the follow on. Have you done anything on Sonny Chiba? He was Japanese, practiced a "hard" style karate, and was one of the first martial artist in movies. Later he was an adviser and choreographer for many U.S. movies.

That's not Chris Collins. That's Mark Strange, who actually got into his film debut in a Hong Kong movie called "The Twins Effect" directed by Donnie Yen and Dante Lam. Chris Collins appears later as the actual US Marine Corps "Kyokutan" (?) Karate instructor fighting Donnie Yen. Both Strange and Collins are actually Wing Chun practitioners and instructors. Collins teaches in Hong Kong, and Strange in Lancashire.

The only reason I can see why those guys were still in their uniforms at the beginning is because the scene takes place right after a Karate Tournament that Bruce Lee and his school participated in alongside other schools. It would still make sense that folks would have changed back into some casual clothes by the end of it, (Bruce Lee certainly took the time to change) but I’m guessing these guys wanted to quickly find and pick a fight before Bruce Lee went home for the evening.

Remember Bruce Lee's famous quote. "The best style is no style." Once you use a style you confine yourself to it and your opponent will be able to read you. "Be like water" Shape yourself to the task at hand. If the moment requires a haymaker punch then do it. Knowing as much as possible is good. But practice makes perfect and knowing to much will slow down the process of learning the important things. Jeet Kune Do is the basis of what is important to learn first. "Fear not the man who has practiced 10000 kicks once. Fear the man who has practiced one kick 10000 times" Striking a balance between these two methods is the key to mastering martial arts.

I never thought that anyone would ever be able to channel the spirit of Bruce Lee on film, to the point where you believe it's him and forget its just an actor portraying him. After watching this, I'm happy to admit that I was wrong. 6:02 If there was anyone more superhuman and godlike then Bruce Lee, its Bruce Lee with nunchucks

That fight was comically bad, and I did used to wear my Gi to and from class, though I'd often wear a jacket over the top or on hot days wear a t-shirt and carry to top of the Gi. I may catch heat for this but as a Karate guy we always found kickboxers to be the jerks :)

I think the reason karate gets a lot of stick for the jerks thing is because karate is the mcdonalds of martial arts. its everywhere and everyone knows about it, so its the most common martial art to get trained in (thus more jerks who study karate even if per capita its the same) and it gets blamed for any issues because all martial arts are karate like all fast food is mcdonalds.

The movie is all pretty fictionalized so them adding Bruce using that style earlier in his life makes some sense. It's just like that older Dragon: Bruce Lee story movie where they protrayed him always using jeet kun do throughout his entire lifetime.

I strongly urge you to watch the fights in Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. It stars Phillip Ng (who played as Bruce Lee in Birth of The Dragon) and Andy On (he fought Donnie Yen in Special ID). This movie is apparently a remake of the Shaw Bros. movie The Boxer From Shantung, just like how the movie Hero is (the 1997 movie not Jet Li’s Hero) the fight scenes were choreographed by Sammo Hung last I checked (he also stars in the movie too)
