you should ALWAYS watch fight scenes in wide screen, not this 3:4 tv ratio. that's not how jackie chan intended the camerawork to be. tons of details are missed.

I think the flipping/rolling off the wrist lock throws is deliberate so that you don't end up on the ground right next to the guy and get your head stomped in

He's using a mix of Taekwondo and Muay Thai. Often the fiercest and most formidable opponents you can face are ones that use multiple aspects from different styles. Any more than 4 or 5 and you start to get into Batman territory, where no matter who you're facing at all, you have a multitude of options on how to offend against them and defend against them and you can become very difficult to beat.

Are we just reviewing movie fights on how cool or fun they are to watch and how well they're choreographed? I mean, it says nothing whatsoever about the skill of the actors (martial artists) in the scene. The "fight" is mapped out, move for move, by the filmmakers, most likely Bruce himself, since he's the lead. At the time, Chuck was still competing regularly, Bruce was being a movie star. The scene is OK, looks very "movie-like," and bears little or no resemblance to a real fight. But, that's because real fights just don't look beautiful on screen.

Thank you! I was looking for a fighting specialists reaction to this particular fight. It’s great at showing the difference between being a good fighter as a sport mastership and a real street fight. Sheriff was absolutely outmatched in the ring. The black guy was practically dancing around him. But sheriff is treating this as a street or prison fight where loosing is not an option so he’s willing to bite, go for balls, eyes etc. And as you said, you can’t train for someone biting you lol. Endurance (being able to take a hit) and brutality can outlast skill. I spent 10 years practicing judo as a sport. And yeah I can flip a guy over on a tatami. Where he’s restricted by all kinds of rules on what he can do to me. But the one street fight I was in while travelling all that training flew out the window. The dude who jumped me was older bigger and stronger and he would’ve kicked my ass. (He was Russian and attacked me cause I was wearing Ukrainian flag on my backpack. So he probably wasn’t gonna just rob me and go away, he wanted to beat me up). I only survived that cause the first thing I did is I punched that guy in his Adams’s apple with my phone and ran away while he collapsed down coughing lol. I got on my train and spend the rest of the day thinking of how useless all my judo was here.

Rewatching this and it makes me nostalgic of my past as a moronic boxing hobbyist. I was a boxing nerd and would try to fight like Ippo cuz it looked cool but when we sparred after drinking(stupid, I know), I reverted to my actual training which is olympic style boxing(trying to cleanly get hit and not get hit from way outside) with a power straight and left hook to either KO, deter or push people away from mid to short range.

Well self belief and strong willpower can do miracles. But there's a limit where the mind can overcome damage and fatigue. That's a limit that is taken away in anime, but very well present in reality. Take some morals from these animations but don't believe the very same applies to actual humans, kids XD

Those physiques though. You can obtain one of those by training your ass off and taking steroids in a ratio such that your flesh will turn into marble. Then get actually sculpted by an artist and it's done.

Funny enough, he trained for months for this movie, hand to hand combat and weapons training. And the people who trained him portrayed the people he messed up. So there was alot of trust built up between stunt men and star for the scene. He later said that the training saved his life in surviving a heart attack.

The fight seen was b.s. Too many times the champ had stunned or hurt Hood and didn't finish him off. He gives Hood time to recover, he puts him in an arm bar but instead of dislocating Hood's shoulder and snapping his arm he allows Hood to bite his thigh. A bite would have hurt but only for as long as it would take to break the shoulder and or your opponents arm. When he knocked hood to the floor and Hood was on his hands abd knees he would have at the very least attacked him- axe kicks to the head and spine, kicks to arms, stomps to his hands- Damon was fighting for his life and he was pissed. No quarter would have been given so the attack on Hood would have been relentless. There would have been no pauses to talk. If Hood had open his mouth he would have been rewarded with a kick to the knee, a stomp to the instep or a stiff punch, palm strike to the chin, or knife hand strike to the carotid or windpipe. I am not sure why people assume a trained fighter wouldn't know he was in a street fight, or why he would leave his head out there stationary when a guy is trying to take him out. Or throw a kick that a man could catch. That kick would have gone to the knee or shin it would have immediately been followed by more strikes until Hood was dead or seriously injured. A real cop would have drew his sidearm and stayed outside of seven yards, ordered Damon to the ground and if it tried to attack he would have mag dumped him.
