Been watching your channel for years. I've learned that what I really love is Marshall 4x12 cabs with greenbacks. The amp almost doesn't matter. In fact I love when you play other non-Marshall amps into these cabs. Not that I don't love Marshall amps, but the cabs are where the magic is, IMO.

I too love the Marshall cabs with the greenbacks! However.. if you ever choose to go mini, try the Mesa Boogie min rectifier cabinet with 1 Vintage Celestion! They sound amazing!

@BrianIsBrined ...I also learned that if their greenbacks ...they have to be at least a 4x12. A 2x12 Greenback, let alone a 1x12 Greenback is not enough bass for me. Now ....two 4x12's and were in business. For a single 12 or a 2x12 I'll take a 65w Creamback.

Many people are commenting on how extreme the settings on the DSL20 are to get it to sound like the SV20, but what they're neglecting to notice is that the settings on the SV20, with bass at 2 and middle, treble, and presence at 8, aren't that neutral either. If you compare what it took to get the DSL20 to sound like the SV20 to the settings of the SV20, the settings between the two amps aren't as drastically different as it might seem at first.

It's videos like these that save me a couple grand. My JCM DSL 50 gets close enough. Thanks for another great video!

I finally got around to messing with my dsl20cr and hooked it up to my 1960TV cab and used some of your settings. Wow I can't believe how good that sounds! Thank you so much for making this video.

I own 2 Marshall 2x12 cabs got rid of the brand new vintage 70’s and installed green backs 25 watts each,what a huge difference!!! My sv 20 sounds amazing!!! I don’t even need pedals!!! Les Paul and my 61 sg ,unbelievable!!!!

I own the DSL20HR and I think it is a very versatile amp....I consider it a keeper for me, thanks Johan

I wasn't expecting/looking for this comparison.I have had the DSL20H since it came out.And an SV20H for just a week. The SV20H is like being given the key to all the great songs and music I grew up with and their dynamic freedom.I haven't thought bad of the DSL since buying the SV either, I see it as a keeper as I discover more about both.Thank you Johan !

for the DSL l like the red ch with low gain better than the green ch with cranked gain. I like the SV more. I had the DSL20, ORIGIN 20H and 50H and sold all them after a while. Now remained my favorite beast DSL100H. Nice comparison as always Johan

There is no master on a dsl 20

Same father, but on different sides of the tree. I think there are big similarities. At the same time SV has more vintage tones, and is my choice for late '60 and early '70 rock (my favourite). DSL20 can definitely stand up on its own legs. Great platform for slightly different tone. Very good comparison, thanks Johan!

Thanks for the comparison! It's quite amazing how much you can tweak the DSL20H and it indeed got really close. Despite the price difference, I think the DSL20H is more of a modern work-horse amp that covers a lot of sounds and has more features like reverb and FX loop. The SV20H is more straightforward classic plexi sounds (more my cup of tea).

I been gigging with a DSL410cr for few months and I been trying to get a good sound out of it. I changed the speaker to creambacks it sounded better but still missing that classic marshall tone... After I watch this video I tried similar settings and omg I cannot believe how good it sound. All I did was increase presence and mids and reduce resonance and bass... Thanks Johan for this video.

I have the 5cr. Changed speaker to a Vintage 10 and started playing with low bass and more treble and mids.. OMG, it's like a brand new amp, will never sell it

I went from DSL 40C over Origin 20H to SV 20H. And I am very happy! It is a fantastic amp and it sounds amazing through my 1936 with an original pair of G12-65! Cheers from Germany ✌🏻

Well i am no expert, but i can share my opinion. The DSL 40C is a great amp and the most versital. I changed the speaker (G12M65 Creamback) and i used a MXR EQ in the Loop. It can cover a lot of ground, but i wanted a more vintage sound. And I wanted a head, the combo is very heavy! I tried the Origin 20H which i liked alot. But i was constantly changing the settings because everytime i played i had the feeling that it sounded different the last time and something was missing. No idea, maybe only my amp or my hearing 🤣. So I sold it to get a SV20H. To me it sounds and "feels" better than the other amps. Finally it all depends on the music you want to play and the equipment you are using. There are many factors i would say. Guitars, speaker/cabs, pedals and fingers...

So I bought a SV20h when they first came out and I used it for two years. It just kept feeling more like a one trick pony. That doesnt mean it wasnt good but moreso not as versatile. I sold it and bought the DSL20hr and do not regret it. As Johan demonstrated it can come real close to the SV20h and is capable of a bit more even without pedals. Both are good amps for sure. Looking to get a Peavey Classic 20mh now.

Yeah, it’s of course the winner, but I’m think DSL comes really close if tweaked right. Default settings on the DSL is nowhere near the SV.

They're close, yet at the same time. They are distinctly different. And that's why there's room in our collections for both. Recently got a 1975 Superlead with a master volume mod (thank goodness for that), and it's an absolute beast of an amp. Handles pretty much everything I throw at it, from SRV/Hendrixy cleans. To Drop C filth and even lower when being pushed with my SD-1. I don't think people truly appreciate how versatile the SLP can be. I've noticed my '75 is almost what I believe to be abnormally aggressive, yet it's stock.

Very interesting comparison. The DSL sounds surprisingly similar to the SV, although the SV has a little more warmth and chime. Coincidentally, I usually play thru a 1972 Super Lead with a PPIM and a 4x12 1960BX Greenback cabinet at home. In my band's practice studio I use a DSL100 and I am constantly trying to make it sound like my at-home rig. I really can't get close to it. I've come to realize that a lot has to do with the speakers. At home it's a Greenback cabinet and in the studio it's a 4x12 MG cabinet. The cabinet was obviously "skimped" on and it's easy to infer that better speakers in a better cabinet would surely make the DSL sound a lot better.

The SV20 is more open but both sound great! I use a DSL 100 in the band I play in and it is very versatile.

DSL gets pretty close, is cheaper and can do modern hi gain tones

I own both of these. Both are great and you can get them to sound similar at low and medium volume levels, but if you crank both at full 20 watts the difference is night and day. The DSL20 sounds like a toy compared to the SV20 at that level. Way louder and captures the classic plexi tone. I use the DSL for practicing and the SV20 for gigs. Not dissing the DSL cause I do like it.

I play both at full volume here. They’re equally loud and sound almost identical when the DSL is tweaked as I described in the video. I’d be glad to make another video where I emphasize that finding more. I think it’s very sympathetic of Marshall to offer tones like this on their basically cheapest tube amp. It has to be tweaked in an odd way though. The gold is hiding in plain sight.

@@josee.martinez5717 is it a 1st batch? I heard the FX loop does not work in the very first models. I got a late 2019 model and everything works fine. on 20 watt setting its so loud I have to use Good ear plugs to experience it

On the lower gain setting on DSL it sounds similar but fatter/more saturated but equally as good. On the higher gain setting it starts to sound boomy. Both amp are so excellent that if one can afford it buy both. It would be interesting to hear how both amps sound overdubbed together in a track. There is also the question about how the amps could be made to sound closer with an EQ.

Och överlag är det för bright ljud i stärkaren även med diskanten på noll och samma med precense. Jag kör ut genom Celestion vintage 30w 2/12. Hur får man mer mellanregister och botten i stärkaren? Har du provat med några pedaler före eller i loopen som skulle kunna få den att bli lite mer flexibel i ljudbilden. Jag ska prova den i en 4/12 marshall låda som är tillverkad i Indien, vet ej vilka element som sitter i den, får öppna den. Ska även prova den på en Bugera 4/12. Körde du på greenbacks i dina lådor på klippet? Tack igen grymma videos

Both sound really good to be honest, but I Definitely prefer the tones coming outa the SV! Has that crunch and more top end sizzle. Really gnarly! Claasic rock sound.

I did buy a lead 20 about 8 years ago for 70 bucks and sold it a few months later for around 125. Wish I would've held on to it. Not the worst mistake but it was a great amp. Rock on Johan. Thanks for comparing the SV with its much cheaper cousin, Johan! It's always great to see you get the maximum out of even a budget amp! They seem close enough, but each of them is quite different in its nature and approach... I like the SV better here. Btw have you tried the setting you had on the classic channel of the dsl20cr against the 1987x in your older video?

Rule of thumb for using DSL20: roll off the bass and enjoy the tones ;-)

I bought the SV20 brand new and I really tried to love it and I just couldn't come to like it. They say the plexi type amp is an evil mistress. I think I love loud clean amps and spiced up with pedals after so many years of playing and having so many different tube amps.

I live in the US and I've run into at least a half dozen musicians who have purchased Marshall products based upon the reviews in this channel. Thank you for your hard work and sharing your immense knowledge of these amps. Truly a valuable resource!

I think I liked the sound of the DSL at 3:09 best. The SV20 was winning out up til then. Nice combination of Vintage (the cab/speakers) and modern (the dsl). Cheers.

Boy, that Ultra mode is harsh distortion. The lower/med gain stuff sounds good though. I'd probably take the SV20, but the DSL still seems good for the price.

Nice comparison, I listened without looking at the video and though the DSL was approximating the tone it still doesn’t have the punch and clarity, especially playing lead, it has that modern Marshall sound, there’s a kind of fuzzy background to it.

I own a handful of marshalls of the jcm 800 variety. I like the SV20H however, I am fearful of the longevity. Its obvious there is a build difference circuit board mounted tubes and all on the DSL20. I have been keeping an eye on failure rates on the SV20H before I buy one. The 1974x is in that same window for a price point used and definitely has proven itself. I will probably go with a 1974x.

I’m wondering if you put an EQ pedal in the effects loop of the dsl and fine tune the mids if you can get the same tone. The way they break up is pretty similar, more so than I thought they would. This series has been great, I’m on the search for my first Marshall. As of now I’m looking at putting a Carl Martin plexi tone in front of my vintage super reverb, I caught a video of a guy doing that and it sounded incredible but I still want a legit marshall.

Glad to hear it! I think an EQ pedal in the FX loop will take away a lot of spatial richness though. You could probably fine tune the onboard EQ more than did and get closer. Remember all knobs are coupled so if you move one knob, the other knobs may be more effective then

3:25 is what impresses me

They seem to get quite close. Strange settings on the DSL though. I doubt most people would try those settings. They would prob try it on the neutral tones which sounds quite different and not realise the amp is capable of getting these tones. Great findings. I might try similar on a DSL1 and see how it sounds.

I have the DSL 50H which has a legendary list of users (Jeff Beck,Gary Moore,Steve Lukather etc). It really is a mature amp. I've always wanted a plexi and the SV20 was almost in the basket at Thomann.... now, after your vid, I have to take a closer look at my DSL again...do I really "need" the little Plexi,,,we'll see...

There's a different texture, but I wasn't expecting them to be so close! Any time I played a DSL, I couldn't get a sound I really liked out of the classic gain channel, and found the ultra gain channel to be too modern - I'll definitely try out these extreme settings! ... I still want a 2204, though. Hahaha!

I use a TC electronic Spark boost pedal, Friedman be od pedal and also a tubescreamer ts10 with the dsl classic gain channel. Ultra Gain channel is too muddy and fizzy for me especially with gain setting beyond 2 or 2 1/2. I love my dsl15h through a 1x12 V30 cabinet.

I found the Studio classic JCM 800 amazing with the volume over 5 and a volume box in the loop. I found the SV 20 entirely unimpressive no matter what did with it..don't know if maybe I got a bad one. I Also loved the DSL 20 with gain down.

Amazing how close the DSL can come to the Plexi by just simple EQ manipulation. Wow! I wonder if this same kind of closeness can be achieved at lower volumes or if they have to be dimed to reach this kind of parity.

Until now I was happy with my DSL40, now I want to get my hands on a SV20... The DSL20 doesn't sound bad but the SV20 has to be one of the best amps Marshall has ever made. Not overly expensive, made in the UK, manageable volume and the sound everyone is after. By the way, have you tried the 5W setting of the SV20?

Another great comparison! I think the next logical comparison would be the SV20C (combo) vs. the 1974X! I have the SV20C and think it sounds great, but would be curious as to how it measures up against the pricier 1974X.

Thanks! I prefer SV20 to 1974X amp wise. SV20 has the punchy super lead tone and 1974x is voxier and more compressed. The Heritage speaker is in the X is better than the V-type though.

Interesting, they sound pretty similar here. I owned a DSL50 and own a 1987x and they sounded very different to me.

Hi! I’ve never played them back to back I’m afraid. For high gain tones the SV has a lot more head room though

With the tweaked settings, I cannot hear much (if any) difference between the two. I’m sure it feels different to play and so on, but here they Sound the same - equally great, that is 😊

I had a DSL40c, which I never really liked even with a speaker change, and now have the SV20c. I did not like the SV so much with just the 10inch speaker so I added a 1x12 to it, loaded with a g12h55, and it sounds great now. They should have loaded them with a 12" greenback atleast like the new JTM studio has.

I own a new DSL40CR. I keep reading comments about how amazing greenback speakers are. Exactly which greenback speaker would be the one for my DSL40CR? Thank you.

Oh man. I am slightly dissapointed on the DSL here. The DSL is one of those amps that you see online and watch videos and convince yourself that it's the right amp for you; but when you go out and actually play through one you find out it's just not for you. That happened to me, I loved the DSL, went to the store to buy it, I tried it out, and left the store with a Bassbreaker 45. Since then, I just can't seem to like how it sounds. I was hoping you would find a setting that showed me I was wrong. It just has this frequency on the upper mids that I just couldn't get rid of, and that was what killed it for me.

Ive got the same Problem bit ive ordered it online. I tried everything eq, master cranked, preamp cranked, presence and treble dimed...not much difference. Nxt week ill try a new speaker and some od 2button footswitch to drive it harder and turn the gain on the amp down. For now i work with pedals and get the drive from it but its a nice pedal platform very nice;)

@@musik4life24 Did you get the combo? I think that the DSL20CR uses the Celestion Seventy-80 (don't quote me on that). My Vox AC4 uses that same speaker and for a while the situation with that amp was dire. I found it to be extremely harsh and pretty lifeless unless I turned it up quite high. Then I got an old 70's 2x12 with unidentified speakers, and that Vox has become one of my favorites. So maybe a speaker change can be very beneficial to you. At least that was what happened to me.

Hi Rob, That’s a surprising take away from this video. Maybe I shouldn’t have included the neutral and classic settings cause the do indeed sound bad. The DSL can be tweaked to sound bad and the SV basically can’t. I think that’s the primary difference between them. That and cosmetics of course.

I know its not comparing apples to apples but would an EQ pedal help fix the scooped mids on the 20HR? Is there anything that could fix the scooped mids?

im sure the dsl20 is okay for rehearsing etc.. but i think it was outclassed here.

I am seriously considering the dsl 20 combo for home use. As much as I love the sv20, I can't splurge the extra $$$ to play in my bedroom lol

Not surprising you could get them close. I own both of these amps. The biggest difference is the power amp section. If you ran the DSL FX send out to the FX return of the SV you would get there much quicker and easier.

nah.. the biggest difference is the gain structure, whenever you push the DSL they go darker and super compressed instead of getting that bite that Plexis and JCM 800 get..I can't get my DSL 40C to sound like a Plexi, the voicing is too different.

I’ve got an idea for an experiment.... how about building a custom cabinet closed back out of entire sheets of 4x8’ 3/4” plywood & load it with 2 x15” 3x12 “ & 2x10” speakers .... 🤔🤔🤔

I agree a DSL can get SV sounds and a lot more and costs a lot less

With some eq you could get the Dsl to sound as good, but there is a reason why the SV is more expensive...

Both 20 watt amps are identical in sound, the one with the four inputs might have more tones?

The family resemblance is there but the DSL didn't really sound like the Plexi to me, has a darker, fuller modern sound.

I tweaked the SV to sound as good as possible but for the DSL I showed both the default settings (EQ=5,5,5,5…) and the settings that makes it sound like a plexi which are pretty odd. Cheers

@@JohanSegeborn It's not a bad sound, some might prefer it but I'd say if you want the Plexi sound buy the Plexi, or if you have the money get both 😁

I gotta say around 3:00 and 3:10 both amps sounded extremely close.

Is it wrong to want a 1987x and an SV20? And is it also wrong to want the SC20H?

The SV still sounds better to my ears and my preference The DSL 40 seems to get better reviews than the 20, after this video i can see why.I dont think the DSL20 sounds bad at all but doesnt have that quality componate tone

To me the custom settings of the DSL sounded almost identical to the SV. The default settings doesn’t sound very good though

Resonance 3 Presence 10 Bass 0 Middle 9 Treble 8 Red Channel I’m guessing classic gain settings all the way up

So, it depends on how down the rabbit hole you want to go, right? For most listeners, the difference is either unnoticeable or academic, but the player who really wants to "be the niche" would require the SV at a minimum and probably the 1987X if at all feasible.

i really wouldn't ignore dsl20 heads if i came across them second hand. worst case scenario, wouldn't be too hard to sell. now the SV and SC heads there doesn't seem to be any on the used market... almost tempted to buy one new and sell in case it doesn't do it for me... used prices are ridiculously closed to new

The DSL sounded good with gain on 3 or less, with the master on 10. On gain level 5 it fell apart. Have you ever tested a DSL100?

I have a dsl15 and I have also played the dsl100. I agree the ultra gain channel falls apart when gain is past 4. The tone is virtually identical. Obviously more headroom with the 100. The bigger difference to me was additional gain stage on classic gain . This channel has green and red , red being classic crunch. Dsl15 doesn't have this, only classic gain. The green channel or red channel is all you have. The classic crunch stage on the 100 is beautiful and usable. The dsl40 may be another option but I'm not sure if the two channels have a green/red zone as I have not played a 40w combo yet.

@@mitchellferre1652 I have a DSL100. I think it's a great amp! I agree the gain is better on crunch vs ultra. It really is a great amp!

I also dial up the MID to 100% & turn down BASS quite a bit on my DSL 20H. Out of the box this amp is bass-heavy & mid-scooped, which is not my kind of sound.

SV definitely has better clarity/presence, but you could probably get the DSL even closer with an EQ pedal

Johan, would you ever be interested in selling impulse responses of your cabinets? I know I wouldn't be the only one that would want to buy some from you...

Good tones!! But you should compare the DSL with a JCM2000 'cause i think both has the same tone. The SV20 might has the "same" tone If compare It with Origin 20 as been Said bellow.

Can the DSL do a SC20/JCM800 tone?

Why would you want to change the dsl into the studio vintage? I think the dsl will kick ass on the sv 20 all day in every way for less than half the cost.

Your playing is juicy But the SV20H wins 🏆

I gotta say I prefer the sv20

I have the DSL20 & 40. The mids are WAY too scooped on either. Marshall should have added a mid-boost switch or a greater sweep on the mid knob pot or even two mid knobs to give you the max tone range in super scooped modern tone vs super extended mids of classic tone. The lack of mids really hurts the clean channel as well because mids are what help fatten up your cleans.

Revisiting this video, I am reminded again how horrible the DSL20 sounds in the neutral position.
