You totally missed the ball on the infamous Mcdonalds promotion from the 1980s, they offered loads of certificates for free food that were only valid if the US won the gold medals in certain olympic events that year, and they were events they were expecting the USSR to win. Contrary to their expectations, the US absolutely demolished the Russians in everything, and Mcdonalds faced massive losses as a result.

while the "Spunk" part added to their downfall it wasn't the reason why Dasani failed in the UK. first is that the UK has high quality tap water when compared to the U.S. standard so the practice of drinking bottled water that isn't mineral water and paying the same price for it was crazy for them. second, a couple of years prior a popular comedy TV show did an episode about the main cast bottling tap water and selling it and the water end up being toxic, so their was already a stigma about the idea of bottled tap water, and to add to that coke's bottling plant happened to be very close to the location where the show took place. and to top it all off the death blow came when coke had to recall the water because one of chemicals they use in the water treatment exceeded the legal limit one one of their batches (not enough to be harmful though) so dasani was being constantly compared to the water from that episode and no one was buying the water.

I wish everyone would stop drinking bottled water! The plastic bottles are filling up our landfills and clogging our waterways!

The Audi ad didn't even make sense. China roughly has a 2:1 ratio (2 men, 1 woman) due to the failed one child policy. So it would have made more sense if the bride's mother had come up and inspected the groom.

From the very beginning, I never understood the attraction of paying a premium for tap water in a plastic bottle.

One reason is taste, to be honest. Even if you want to argue that there's no difference between bottled or tap water as far as safety goes, bottled water just simply tastes and smells better in most cases. A lot of tap water is kind of disgusting in terms of smell and taste, so people buy bottled because they can drink it without gagging or wanting to punch a wall

The Dasani thing went a bit deeper still than just odd campaigns and contaminants in the water. There was a very popular sitcom episode ten years before that where a couple of wheeler dealers did exactly the same thing as Dasani did. Being associated with Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses is the death knell for any business in the UK.

I am a plumber here in Middle Tennessee. I would not drink tap water to take a pill. The only water I will drink is geyser springs. After a lot of research it is pretty much the only water that comes from a spring here in Tennessee and taste awesome in the price is very cheap.

I would like to argue that the Heinz ketchup is not really a marketing fail. As in the promotion itself worked but after the promotion was over that's when the trouble started. And the origin of the chaos was not from a marketing campaign at all but the next owner of the code.

The Dasani one is a really interesting story on how to do your research before entering a new market. Any Brit worth their salt knows the only fools and horses episode with the Peckham spring 😂 the fact that the bottling plant was only a few miles away just makes it funnier. I love how a small article in the obscure grocer magazine lead to the downfall of the brand in just over a month

You didn't notice the most amusing detail about Dasani. Let me set this up. The UK has rules about bottled water coming from a mineral-enriched spring, and it's seen as a cut above tap-water. But the UK has safe clean tap water in general, so it doesn't have much need for specially filtered tap water. A very popular and often-repeated comedy show, Only Fools and Horses, has main characters always trying to make money by selling products that were cheap to acquire at a profit. They live in Peckham (not one of the most aspirational parts of London). In one episode Del Boy has the bright idea of cashing in on the bottled water craze by labelling bottles and filling them with tap water in his flat. The bottles are labelled "Peckham Spring". The Dasani plant was only nine miles from Peckham. When a journalist picked this idea up and ran with it, Dasani was high-visibility doomed. There isn't much evidence for the "spunk" idea, and products with carcinogens happen too often. The "Dasani = Peckham Spring" idea was why Dasani got so widely mocked all over the press, because that made it an entertaining story as well as a "Too Big to Fail" company failing.

I've never understood why people buy bottled water when you can get water for free or very cheap from a tap. If you think the water from a tap is dirty, then put a filter on it. Nestle also uses tap water.
