I remember a few years ago when the restored version of Wake of Fright got released in Australia i was really surprised. It's bleak, themes of isolation and self destruction are so well executed. One of the best Aussie films ever made and Donald Pleasence's Australian accent was spot on. Shows he was a very fine actor.
I was the boom operator on this film and remember it very well

Just watched this for the first time on Amazon prime, had no idea what it was just stuck it on for something to watch and was blown away, what a fantastic film! Not at all easy to sit through yet impossible to look away and in a world of shitty superhero movies this film was exactly what I needed, if only they could still make em like this! And I never saw the boom in shot once! 👍🏼

You're a lucky guy to be associated with one of the best movies that l have ever seen. It really stays with you for the rest of your life Saw it for the first time 45 years ago Still with me!
Pleasence is superb showing versatility that makes him one of the finest actors of the century.
One of the finest films i've ever seen
First film since "Once Upon A Time In The West" (bout a decade earlier) that I started watching half-arsed to spend the time, but switched off about 20 mins in cos I realized: "Fuck me this deserves a proper sit down and 100% attention". Brilliant, brilliant film.

"Dedicated to the endangered Australian kangaroo" hahahahah there is more of them than people almost now
My favourite movie. I've watched it about 30 times. First saw it at a Melbourne drive-in at its first release.

@@trickolas78 When I first saw it as a young teenager, I was traumatised. Now I cover my eyes.
Incredibly, the kangaroo hunt is even more distressing in the novel. I read it around the same time I read George Orwell’s even grimmer Burmese Days (which has a horrifying chapter involving a tiger hunt) and wanted to just crawl into bed and never come out after that.
so not one to watch with a mind crushing hangover then?
Picked up the recent masters of cinema release. Watched it tonight, it's incredible!
Brilliant movie. Makes my top 5 of all time with ease. Possibly my top 2.
One of very few films where heat is conveyed properly, doesn't feel like other films of the era, with their shrieking women and bad camerawork. I didn't think I'd watch all the way through, but I could easily watch it again.
One of my all-time favourites. Truly remarkable film.
Wake In Fright is simply put - a nightmare
Poppycock. Everyone is being overly sensitive about the kangaroo hunt and the movie itself. It was a dark dark movie but not really frightening or scary at all. It is one of the greatest film made.

love wake in fright it is one of my favourite movies and a great Australian classic movie worth watching and true authentic Aussie accent by Donald pleasence
I am so happy that you reviewed this film Mark! It is a journey into hell, but there is a kind of redemption at the end!
Just watched it. What a brilliant film. 🏴
One of those films that drags you through the same hell as the main protagonist. Unforgettable. Especially if it's your first time in The Yabba.😉
Too convenient, I actually watched this this morning, abit gritty for a morning film, but really good, felt abit bewildered after though.
one of my favourite Australian classic movies and great review by mark kermode

Superb film well worth checking out.
Fantastic film. saw it last year.
Great film..
First time I've heard of it..how dit slip under the radar ?
This is so Broken Hill.
People always focus on the kangaroo hunt, when in actual fact, there are some much more disturbing things happening in this film. Is this an indication of denial, the kangaroo scene being a convenient distraction or out. I mean, as much as this is about humans.
An unsparing, black comedy of a rural male hell. Pleasance should have received the Nobel Maniac Prize for this film.
In other words, he couldn't hack it.
the void - his fave subjrct lol
I guess you don`t like then..........
Imagine watching this film drunk.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Well put Mr!
Australian male experience - lots of homosexuality in this film. About right for Australians
A more butch version of The Man Who Fell To Earth
its a pity the main actor is so unlikable
Picked up the recent masters of cinema release. Watched it tonight, it's incredible!
