One of the best movies of all time - A horrific alcoholic nightmarish movie that has a very real feeling to it
God, I LOVE this movie. If you're a drinker, like I unquestionable am, it's horrifyingly realistic. Can't improve on this. It is without flaw.

I grew up in a remote mining town this culture is entirely relatable.
John dismisses Jock as arrogant and stupid, but I think the old copper had a perfectly clear idea of what went on in his town. I'm certain Jock had a pretty good notion of what transpired between John and Doc.
Brilliant how the crowd parts for Crawford as he heads to the bar, where the barman already had two pints pulled... which he didn't stop to pay for. Subtle foreshadowing.

Country cops determine when the bar closes. Have dropped into a bush pub in western Queensland on I think it was Good Friday or one of the Easter holidays when the pubs are closed. The front door was locked for appearances, and all the townsfolk including the cop were on the piss in the beer garden.

Could have been due to the fact that chips wanted, "real 🍺" so in order to facilitate that, the barman would have had 2 beers of legit stuff (poured outta stubbies beneath the bar probably) at the ready, while everybody else would have had to cop, "fake stuff" if it had, "all been real" that crowd would have, "arced up" a lot earlier and may have, "stuffed everything up! 🙄

This movie was haunting and shocking first time I saw it. Was just by coincidence on Netflix.
I've been living in a. Ountry Town in the middle of nowhere for the past few months, and I can related with Grant when it comes to having one-sided conversations in which the other bloke doesn't actually listen to you and steers the convo into whatever Aussie outback-related thing he wants, or just rambles on with small talk.

Do people constantly buy and/or give you beer? Because that's a situation I could live with.
Been told that this scene was filmed at the Bar at the Sydney Cricket Ground! I was told that they advertised Free Beer for the whole day on a Friday and At 8 pm they started filming when everybody was well and truly blotto!😀🤠🧔🍺🍻🏟️🇦🇺

It Actually Might Have Been Filmed At The Bar At The Sydney Showgrounds!👱🍺🍻🇦🇺
I read on IMDB that the crew set up non alcoholic drinks for this scene and chips could tell and refused to film the scene unless it was legit beer.

classic
Chips Rafferty (the Policeman) - a famous Australian actor sadly died of a heart attack prior to the films official release in 1971. Several other Australian film stars also appear, very early in their careers. A film classic for many but some scenes are certainly to everyone's taste.
No escape
God this is a wild movie. Love it
Looks like heaven
He's not an Aussie - he's Bulgarian/Canadian, his wife english as is the main protagonist. Roos were Australian tho. Great movie about outback dystopian life

Badge & A beer 🤭 great movie!
Reminds me of the scene with the wine from "A Clockwork Orange" (same year as this movie, by the way)

I love how this scene shows how all of John's problems come from being a proud, arrogant, prick. Chips Is basically the coolest older brother you could ever want to have, I mean if the town sheriff is buying your drinks, you know your in for a good time, but he's too much of a prick to enjoy it. This set-up really makes this film into a Black comedy for me, you can't feel sorry for him since he brings it on himself.

What? The sheriff was super threatening and overbearing. John's a prick, sure. But the sherrif is a dominating freak.
Yes
I worked on this film and removed this scene very well.

Jock takes a cut of the betting game. That's why he gets Jack drunk and introduces him to it 🤣
It's death to farm out here. It's worse than death in the mines. You want them to sing opera as well?
If the Yabba is Hell, would that make Jock Crawford the Devil?
This movie most definitely did not help Australian tourism.

I think you'd be surprised. The movie did really well in France and the UK, where they have a fascination with the Outback. I doubt people would be scared away. I've seen Deliverance but I'd still like to see the Appalachian region in the US. I think it was mainly Australians who were upset by the film, as it doesn't portray us in the best light.
"u say you're a slave, whadaya mean by that?" there's probably a few answers that could resonate from that question!
Their should be anward given to up and coming actors in his memory
Lest we forget
beer in half pints is lethal.Easy to down and before you know it you’ve downed 20+ of them. This is a great film.
Sounds like a nice place to be....everyone buys you beer.
Why does he say Jack instead of John?

Chips rafferty, had he not sadly died b4 his time would definitely have embraced the revival of aussie TV with grundy produced shows thru the 70's and into the 80's with such classics as division 4, homicide, (may even have taken alwyn Kurts' role) and matlock 👮♂️👮♀️! (mick pate given a, "run 4 his money") even blue heelers🐕 (may well have knocked John wood, "outta da ring🥊")
