MARIO SAVIO - "Operation of the Machine"

Mario Savio's speech at The Sproul Hall Steps on December 2, 1964
"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!"

I first heard this sampled in a Fear Factory song (Timelessness) when I was in high-school. I heard it again more recently in a song by Eidola (Forgotten Tongues) and learned from various comment sections that it is also sampled in a Linkin Park song. Watching the original footage it is easy to see why this has been sampled so frequently. There's a powerful lyrical quality to this section of the speech and his delivery just builds momentum until he basically explodes with "...unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all". I don't know if I've ever heard a more concise and powerful metaphor describing the necessity of unified, non-violent resistance in the face of oppression and exploitation.

for those who are wondering, the table was staffed by Jack Weinberg, and was representing the Congress of Racial Equality - a nonviolent, African-American Civil Rights organization which at the time was an influential and effective venue for direct action towards desegregation. Their activities these days are less than revolutionary, but at the time they were prominent, and their harassment at the hands of police on Berkeley was no accident. It was explicitly the result of a new rule that banned political action and fundraising on campus - a rule which is obviously unjust. Both Mario's actions preceding this, and CORE setting up a table here was in protest to this rule, hence the subsequent formation of the Free Speech Movement, which Mario Savio quickly found a place of prominence in.

Hardly! I do hope you're being facetious. Drumpfnutz can't put 2 and 2 together, so they'd never get this guy's point. And their agenda has nothing to do with equity within society.

And we still do. Hopefully we’ll get a better option than him, but if he’s the best we’ve got come 2024, that’s where my vote rests. Had enough of the games. Time for this nation to shake off its complacency and petty internal power struggles to become the great country it once was.
