Mario Clash retrospective: Dream of the red turtles | Virtual Boy Works #06

Ойындар

Mario's second (and final) outing on Virtual Boy is a more traditional adventure for him. Exceptionally traditional, in fact, as it reaches back into the early roots of the series, well before the days of Mushroom Kingdoms and Koopa Kings, to present fans with a single-player update to the original Mario Bros. It's a remarkably complex game with a high degree of difficulty, but one that deserves not to be forgotten.

So Wario sets up Mario Clash so Mario would be too pre-occupied to star in a main game thus allowing Wario to take the main spotlight in Wario Land on Virtual Boy. Deepest lore.

You're actually lucky that you couldn't make it to level 99, I heard that if you beat the whole game in one sitting the Virtual Boy merges with your face in a bizarre Twilight Zone-style morality play about the horrors of getting too enthralled in a virtual world

I continue to be genuinely baffled as to why Nintendo never released any Virtual Boy titles on the 3DS. (And at this point, it's safe to say they won't.)

The worst thing about it was that was clearly the one opportunity to re-releases these games. The 3D gimmick of the 3DS never really became the system selling feature that Nintendo hoped it would be to the point where they released versions without the feature at all. So unless Nintendo joins the current VR scene at some point I'm guessing we won't see another 3D Nintendo system. This was the only time we could have seen these games again and we didn't get them. So we never will and that's a shame.

@@IanSane Yeah, and I actually don't see Nintendo being very interested in VR. Their corporate philosophy, since at least the Wii, has been aimed at encouraging in-person social play. VR doesn't really go along with that. I see them as being much more interested in AR and similar technologies. Stuff like Pokemon Go which integrates gaming into everyday life, rather than shutting the user away from the world around them.

I think it would have been great, but the games would only work out on a new 3DS, or new 3D XL, because those are the only ones with two ciecle pads, AND 3d mode, so I think virtual boy would actually be better on switch, but it's too late for that now

I like this series as actual in depth reviews of these games are scarce and me as a die hard Nintendo fan loves information like this. It's kinda funny how Nintendo is treating the Virtual Boy, but as shown in this video they don't celebrate the games, they just use self-deprecating comedy whenever VB is talked about. #savethevb

Sometimes I feel like the Virtual Boy is from an alternate timeline that merged with this one. In that timeline, I suspect the Super NES never existed, and Nintendo coasted along with NES and Game Boy until 1995, possibly going out of business after the N64 and Virtual Boy failed. The N64 was a total failure just like the Saturn because Nintendo never had a relationship with Rare, due to Donkey Kong Country not existing either. Gunpei Yokoi's death ends up happening shortly after Nintendo goes out of business, making it all the more symbolic. This game and the Virtual Boy in general weirdly make more sense there, the way it seeks to build on and expand the concepts of the Arcade, Game Boy and NES eras but seems not to have learned anything or been seriously influenced by the SNES titles at all. If you think about it, there's no good reason for Nintendo to release new hardware ahead of the N64 if they already have the Super Nintendo.

So I'm merely hypothesizing, but perhaps the Virtual Boy was intended to have four face buttons? In Mario World he does jump with B too. But the controller having two d-pads, 4 buttons, and on top of shoulder triggers would've been too much. Extremely speculative on my part. Then again it could also just be them messing up the inputs! Still a shame about VB Mario Land.

Currently, there are two emulators available, and both of them are awful - and they appear to no longer be under development. (One, derived from Libretto, doesn't even support 3D.) A third group is working on a totally new emulator, found here: perfectkiosk.net/, but it's clearly slow going so there's no telling when - or if - it will actually be ready for prime time. And I'm sort of dubious about their decision to make it Java-based...

It's really a shame that Mario Clash doesn't have battery save, because if it saved your high scores and let you start from any level you had unlocked, this good game would have been great... but as it is, it's a score attack game with a long playtime on a system you don't really want to be using for a long time, which is a big issue. I like the VB quite a bit, but it's not meant to be played for 99 levels of Mario Clash all at once!
