Jeremy Parish | Video Works

Welcome to Video Works, a weekly video retrospective survey of post-Atari-crash console and portable game history. Currently, my primary focus is NES Works, a chronological survey of the American NES library, a Segaiden, a companion piece that focuses on Sega consoles beginning with the SG-1000. Each video takes us through the history a different gaming platform by examining its library game-by-game, in chronological order, highlighting the design and creation of each game while also explaining the context of its release to help convey what made that game special (or, sometimes, not special).

If you'd like to support these ventures, though, you can contribute to the Video Works Patreon campaign (www.patreon.com/gamespite). Or you can buy related books at Fangamer.net and LimitedRunGames.com. Thanks for watching!

First played the OG Excitebike as a bonus unlockable in Excitebike 64. As I recall, the emulation wasn't quite perfect, and while it played fine, the silly "boing" noise in the menu theme wasn't there. Imagine my surprise/amusement when I heard the real version later, assumed it was a funny glitch, then learned that's actually how it's supposed to sound.

SD Gundam games are very different from the SD Gundam shows. As an enormous Gundam nerd, this looks appealing. Seeing a Rick Dias fight Big Zam is pretty damn cool! Yeah, the fight scenes in this game are slow, but I think the gameplay itself is decent.

For some reason, I adore NES Pinball, more than a lot of other, more exciting, even better games. I never had an NES growing up, didn't play it until Animal Crossing, but something about the flow of the table and the cute theming just clicks with me. Still don't know why the flippers turn invisible at 100,000 points, though.

I just found this channel. The care and effort put into this is phenomenal. I like how you put this into context of other games from the era. Including things like the Japanese commercials is just icing on an already delicious cake. I’m now subscribed and will be checking out your other videos.

One thing that makes this game stand out to me is its atmosphere. Something about the look and feel of the game as opposed to the first, with more complex music, a more "adult" Link, towns with inhabitants and so on- it gives the feeling of being more a sprawling fantasy adventure and I think that's kept me coming back to it even with the gameplay being frustratingly difficult. It has a similar surreal vibe to Faxanadu. The big drawback is the dungeons are way too easy to get lost in without a map (which I guess makes this one even more of an RPG since you have to get out the graph paper or have a strategy guide.) It does still feel a little janky in execution compared to surrounding Zelda games, but then it's trying something much more difficult for the time.

I like to rewatch this video every few months. Super Mario Bros was the first video game I ever played, and even though it wasn't until 1989 or so, I deeply appreciate how much effort you put into placing this game in the context of its release and outlining just how revolutionary and influential it was. I really think a lot of that is being lost to history, or people kind of know but don't *really* know. Anyway, I was kind of in the dumps today and coming back here helped <3 My sads didn't make me cry earlier today, but I'll always tear up at the end of this vid.

I grew up brute forcing my way through Captain Skyhawk. I probably would've enjoyed Cobra Triangle to a certain point as a kid, probably end up getting super frustrated at the tower defense-like rescue missions you mention in this video.

That's because it's the Canadian version. At the time Nintendo products were distributed in Canada by Mattel. It's also why the box has text in English and French.

Rare's good games on NES were clearly an indicator as to why Nintendo partnered with them. At least now Microsoft is willing to let Rare's non-Donkey Kong games on Nintendo's Switch Online apps for younger generations to play.

What REALLY gets me is that the Invaders here are based off the 2600 version of the game! I always thought it was weird Atari never even attempted to copy the original Invader designs but to then go and copy the Atari designs?! Weird.

pet peeve: please don't call lying about history "revisionism". that's not what that word means. revising the accepted narrative is a legitimate and important task, and some liars and cranks using that word for themselves doesn't change that.

Cobra Triangle is an overlooked classic, and I think the last of the NES games to use the "Rare Coin-It" branding that sought to present an arcade-like veneer, like Slalom R.C. Pro-Am and Wizards and Warriors.

This is an absolutely addictive game that I feel doesn't get discussed enough even now that most of the NES hidden gems aren't so hidden anymore. Also, if you destroy a boat that's captured a person, I'm pretty sure that you can pick up the person and tow them back to the starting area.
