If only Marilyn's mother had been able to be proud of her beautiful daughter's achievements and for the wonderful actress she was, maybe it would have helped to heal some of the pain of the early abandonment. Her mother's rejection and condemnation of her career choice must have been like yet another painful wound for Marilyn to deal with. So heartbreaking and sad

I'm surprised she had as much confidence as she did. Having absent/ mentally ill mother definitely affected my ambitions and self worth. Then add not having her father around I'm shocked at her courage

Ang 1111 exactly, she wasn’t too broken to act or become the famous star she did.

He don't think he ever loved her. He was infatuated with her then later, lost all respect for her as he realized she was human with a lot of flaws. Course that never stopped him for going through her money. I think her attraction to him was his being an intellectual, a father figure and he sort of resembled a Lincoln without the beard and we all know how she loved Lincoln. I can see how these things would attract her.

She married men who represented what she wanted to be seen as publicly. She was an intelligent person who wasn't taken seriously so she married someone who was seen by the American public as an intellectual.

@@thinkingallowed7042 I don't think she was with him for her public image. She wasn't that shallow. I think she was attracted to his intelligence and wanted to learn from him, but for herself as a person, to evolve as a person. Just my opinion.

He was patient with her. I'm bipolar and I assume I take meds, so I can say, it's very hard to live with a person like us. At her time, the medicines were worse. Keeping a relationship is hard. The not polite ones end up calling me "crazy." Sometimes I want to quit and wait to die.

I'm so sorry you're suffering from this terrible illness. I hope you found a way to cope better. In terms of your take of the relationship between Miller and Monroe, yours is probably the most measured in tone and reasonable post on this board, by the way.

He wrote the best American plays of the 20th century. He might have written the best plays of the 20th century, period. I think he tried hard with Marilyn, but he couldn't cope. He wasn't a saint, but he didn't destroy her either.

My Two Cents: Well, maybe they both used each other. Was there love? Yes, I believe there was. He did in fact "use" her money. She was a huge stress in his life.
