I think it's interesting to note the reason why her performance of this song sounds more "relaxed" than her mother's has a lot to do with the fact that Elis' version was recorded during the military regime while Maria Rita's has a couple decades of distancing from that period. Elis' performance is definitely angrier and feels more raw because she was living it, seeing her friends "disappearing" or being exiled by the government every day. That of course doesn't take any merit from Maria Rita as she's got a great voice and you can still feel the strength of the words she's singing, even if her personality isn't as confrontational as her mother's.

Well observed. Also, when Maria Rita sings songs recorded by her mother she is also telling the story of her mother, not hers. On this particular song it comes across not as the protest this song is about but like she is telling something from her past, because essentially that's what it is for her.

She's not singing in the same tune of her mother. The original one is D (Elis) and Belchior G or F#m. Her mother had a highter voice, that's why she's singing sweet and her mother needed to scream.

"Como Nossos Pais" was composed by Belchior, a really great singer and composer. He recorded the song before Elis too. This song have diferent meanings when sang by Elis Regina and by Maria Rita. Belchior, and Elis Regina, talking about the dictatorship, the feeling that, even if they were fighting and all, the things doesn't look like they were changing, because of the retrogressive thoughts of the society of the time. At the ending line, Elis points towards a group of puppet dolls, meaning that we are like our parents: puppets from the institutions, government and stablishement. Maria Rita is Elis daughter, and she lost her mom at age of 5. At first, she avoided singing her mother's repertoire, but people still insisted that she sounded like her mother and she watches her mom recordings just to mimic her way of singing. Maria Rita, then, denied that she watches her mom because this make her suffer a lot. She misses her mom and people didn't seem to be empathethic about that. Singing "Como Nossos Pais" ('Like Our Parents') is an act of boldness of her. She wasn't just theatrical at her performance: she was making a statement: yes, she sounds and looks like her mother (hence the slaps on the face), and at the ending line, "We are still the same, and live like our parents" she points towards the Heavens, remembering and honouring her deceased mother.

Thank you for this comment, I was starting to write every word that you just did! It's complex to react to Maria Rita singing especially this song, because there are ALL these questions behind it. Just to add: Maria Rita was 4 years old when her mother died, she was soo little ;( and it was very difficult for her became a singer and sing especially this song. This version is not strong like the original one purposefully, it couldn't be stronger than the original with her mother, never!

Questa canzone è un buon esempio di "poesia concreta" (Belchior come paroliere era un concretista). Il concretismo era un movimento che era, in qualche modo, contrario al Tropicalismo.

Infelizmente Maria Rita já viveu nos tempos da roubalheira e CORRUPÇÃO, que aparentemente não se reflete no sentimento, porém essa mesma corrupção que desviou recursos da Saúde, educação e segurança, matou/não educou muito, mas muito além do que na época da mãe dela.

I have the feeling that when she sings this song it is as a rebuke against those that are always comparing her to her mother. Which is doubly ironic, because this song is the one in the most iconic performance of her mother and consequently one that she is compared to the most. The lyrics talk about not being stuck in the past, people that are too nostalgic and can't appreciate the new for what it is. But people seems to pretty much ignore the advice of the song they love so much. I find that all kinds of amusing.
