I realized at some point, being a huge Brazilian music fan, that a large percentage of the artists I love are really just Italians. The look and sound Italian and even have Italian names. I assume there must have been a large migration of Italians to Brazil at some point in addition to the obvious Portuguese. Frank should check out Ana Mazzotti. We are very biased against women in roles that aren't singing in the US, it's a shame.

Not exactly, she explained that is a version made by Nelson Motta, who lived many years in Italy and was a fan of Pino Daniele. However, as Marisa and Nelson both have lived in Italy maybe that's why he decided to give the song to her.

Ainda lembro que foi o primeiro cd que comprei na vida e como não tinha nenhum som que pegasse cd pedi prum amigo meu gravar uma fita cassete pra eu poder ouvir, esse meu amigo já se foi, porém sempre volta as minhas lembranças quando escuto essa música, lembro também de uma frase dita pela atriz Cristina Mutarelli quando da saída de um show da Marisa em que o repórter perguntou o que ela tinha achado do show e ela respondeu: ARREBATADOR!

I was waiting for you to analyze Marisa Monte. Marisa is Italian. Born in Rio de Janeiro, she is the granddaughter or daughter of Italians, I don't remember now, she has dual citizenship and lived in Italy as a child and adolescent, where she had her musical training. She studied lyrical singing before being discovered by an agent while playing in bars in Rio as she is also an instrumentalist and composer. This song was not chosen at random, in fact it is "E Po 'che fa" which had its lyrics modified and is a very sensual love song. Marisa was 19 years old when she exploded here in Brazil, today she is over 50 with that angelic face that you attest in the video. I am simply in love with her work and today she is the best singer in Brazil since Elis Regina.

You should listen to "Asa Branca" by Luiz Gonzaga. He has a totally different vibe from all the other brazilian singers you've listened to.

I love that you're loving and reacting to all those amazing Brazilian artists, we love and cherish them so much. It's only a shame that you can't understand what they are saying, because most of the magic comes from the poetry. Especially those artists people are recommending, because most of them wrote songs with underlying meanings to every phrase against the dictatorship that occurred here in Brazil. Because, from what I understand, you like discovering new music, if you see this message, I would like to recommend "falamansa - xote da alegria", because this changes the flow of the Brazilian songs you're listening and it's happier. This is probably a new music style that you've never heard before, it's called "Forró". It's an evolution of one of the oldest musical styles originated in Brazil, the "Coco" which in turn ended up turning into Samba too. it's more interesting because of the style than the voice in itself, but the singer does his job well. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3h1qq-Gfdescqw.html (the videoclip, from the 90`s, this music style has gone away for now, or changed a little bit but I love it)

She is terrible!

Brazil has a pretty strong connection to Italy, which started around the late 1800's, when Italian immigrants went to work the fields and try to make it in life there (which was probably - definitely - caused by misguiding propaganda by the Brazilian government at the time taking advantage of the widespread poverty in Italy after the Unification and the fact that slavery had finally been abolished in Brazil). So Brazil is home to the largest number of Italian citizens outside of Italy, I believe. That reflects a lot in our culture, food and music. Also, fun fact: Giuseppe and Anita Garibaldi fought a war in Brazil before going to Italy, so we share a few historical figures too.
