She's trained in opera, but she had a really good musical education overall and great musical taste. Her first album was live and includes this song, which was a big hit, and most of the songs were selected by her. In this recording, she was only 18 or so. That is really impressive for such a young person. From this album, the most remarkable interpretation is 'Negro Gato' (Black Cat), this is really wild, literally. With time she became more predictable in her singing style and you won't expect big surprises from her last albums, but she always offers silky voice and touching melodies. She's elegant and classy, even though quite pop at the same time.

She's incredible, one of my favorites. I HIGHLY recommend you buy her album, "Cor de Rosa e Carvao" (the Color of Pink And Charcoal) which has, surprise, a charcoal portrait of her on pink paper. I think you'll love the whole thing, with "Bem Leve" and "Segue O Seco" as standouts. Well, "Balanca Pema" has great life to it as well. On a side note of that album, her cover of the song "Danca da Solidao" is a Brazilian staple done by many top artists, but it's heart-wrenching nature was only really delivered, in my opinion, by Beth Carvalho.

Marisa is trained as a lyric singer in Italy (soprano), she was discovered by a music producer who hired her to sing popular music. Today she sings everything, rock, samba (listen to Rosa), forró... and other Brazilian rhythms.

I highly recommend the song "Ainda bem" from Marisa Monte since your interested to hear more of her. Her voice in this particular song its just mesmerizing, also please listen to the live version (the video with 46 million views called Marisa Monte - Ainda Bem), it's even better than the studio version, it's stunning indeed.

I do recommend her work, albuns like "Infinito Particular" and "Verde, Anil, Amarelo, Cor de Rosa e Carvão" and of course this live album "MM" (released in 1987) are all solid ways to get to know her music.

Brazilian here. Marisa's voice & singing are national cultural treasures of our MPB/Música Popular Brasileira (Popular Brazilian music). To this day I get goosebumps all over listening to this song.

I love her '40s style of singing. A singer that came out of the 1940s Big Band era and was very popular in the 1950s that is worth checking out is Jo Stafford. She was classically trained but chose to sing popular music. She was one of those singers who could hold her own with Ella Fitzgerald. "You Belong to Me" is a song she is well known for.

I'm Brazilian and consider her one of the best singers in the world. She has classical training and her timbre is amazingly beautiful. Her technique is perfect.

"Bem que se quis" was recorded on his debut album in 1989 and a great popular song in Brazil! Soon after, she changed the artistic direction of her repertoire and incorporated more regional Brazilian and pop music influences into her songs. We love it! 😊 Marisa Monte also recorded with the american singer Laurie Anderson an interesting song called "Enquanto isso" on her beautiful "Cor-de-rosa e carvao" album (1994). Listen it, please!

It's such a bold and risky move and it paid well so well that basically any Brazilian over the age of 20 is at least somewhat familiar with it. She reminds me of Patti Smith with a tropical/latin american flavour and a natural hipster personality. Beth: military style outfit looks cool on you. Oh, before I forget, Marisa Monte formed an interesting musical trio called TRIBALISTAS with two other Brazilian artists (Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown).
