marbled salamander (Ambystoma opacum) eating a worm

Shortly after introducing this salamander to it's new outdoor enclosure, I offered it a worm and filmed it while it glommed onto the worm and began the slow process of consuming it.
Salamanders can swallow a small worm in seconds, but a large lob worm is quite a difficult prey item; they're highly muscular, and the setae (short bristles) on the skin of the worm allow it to pull itself out of the salamander's mouth, or anchor into the ground where it can be difficult or impossible for the salamander to dislodge it.
If the battle goes on for too long, the salamander may give up and regurgitate the back end of the worm. Most salamanders lack the dentition to quickly dispatch their prey, so most items have to be swallowed whole or not at all, although sometimes they can break the tail off of a worm, or tear a limb from another salamander by biting it and rolling crocodile-style to twist it off.
