insulated heated worm bin

My worm production tends to drop off over winter as the compost bins cool down, and it can be problematic trying to get them going again in the spring, since they need to warm up before they can start generating enough internal heat to stay warm. This spring, I insulated this worm bin (originally a coal bunker) with scraps of 25mm polystyrene sheet and some bubble foil radiant barrier insulation (partly for insulation, but mostly to make it look better and to protect the polystyrene from UV light), and I buried a reptile heat mat in the centre of it. The heat mat was modified with some hot-melt glue to reduce the chance of electrocution from water getting into it. A couple of weeks later, there was a lot more activity in the bin, with lots of little worms that had hatched from cocoons.
I raise worms to feed my many newts and salamanders, and the worms are fed mainly on newspaper and kitchen scraps.

Yes, I get my worms from this and also a couple of other compost bins. Worms are pretty easy to raise; you just need something to feed them with (newspaper pulp and kitchen scraps work for me) and something to keep them in, which can be pretty much anything. The trick with the newspaper is to soak it in water for a few days and then tear it and mash it up with your hands until it's a fine slurry of paper fibres; that way the worms have an easy time eating the individual fibres.
nice job by the way.
I appreciate this informative clip on how to keep an outdoor worm bin warm through the winter months. I'm curious to know more about the exact brand, type, and wattage of the heating pad put in the middle of the bin? How long does the plastic pad last living in the gooey moisture of the bin? Thank you!
