How to silence a noisy air pump
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
If you have an aquarium air pump that makes a terrible rattling sound, you can modify it with a few squirts of hot-melt glue, silicone or any other space-filling adhesive or sealant to be as near to silent as it's ever likely to get.
I have two Rena Air 600 air pumps (it's called a Rena Air 400 in the US), and they were both really noisy until I opened them up and modified them to stop the components inside from rattling around.
Wrapping air pumps in towels will muffle the sound, but quickly leads to overheating of the pump, which shortens it's life.

The best solution I found is to unplugged it, works like a charm.

All action, no talk, well demonstrated!
Thanks Peter. I think you should consider putting a warning in your video to prevent the uninitiated from killing themselves on those live terminals.
This man is so close to electrocuting himself.
thanks, I love the fact that you did not talk...:) my airpump drove me to hate noise... im on it...thankyou
Thank for your idea. I was inspired by your vid to silence my little rattler. I used a small piece of rubber about the thickness of a mousepad to cushion the inside of my pump and it is almost silent. The bubbles in the tank are louder than the pump. Cheers
I have this exact unit and after watching this and failing to find any foam or other material the right size, I wanted to test to see if it worked in principle--so I pushed 3 Q-tips on one side and four on the other--and that worked ( : No need to get the glue gun out of storage. Thanks for the tip. Now the worst noise has been silenced.
Thanks so much for your video. My pump is very different inside but I did locate the rattle and hot glued it. Wow! What a difference. Kudos to you! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I've modified 2 of these pumps and they've been running for a month with no problems.
I can stop looking for a new pump, this did the trick on a rather noisy Biorb pump. This really works!!!!!
Sweet, great tutorial where all I see is your hand. Not to mention your amazing step by step walk through. 🙄🙄🙄
BRILLIANT, I will try this - many thanks for showing it xx
You've got some balls messing about in it plugged in I'll give you that! lol :o)

We do it all the time in jail.
Amazing ! Many ,many years ago people were able to communicate only by examples and everything was perfectly clear ; with time people became stupid ; the nature had had to force them starting to express themselves by another way - by talking , hours and hours , and as we know , it doesn't always helps . If you didn't understand what I meant or you didn't understand the video , a man didn't say a word - a big sorry !!!
Whoa! We're back to silent movies.

omg thank you! i have the same rena air pump and it was SO noisy! thank you so much!
OMG totally amazing, I just got a so called "silent" air pump and it is really loud, so I am soo gunna try this Thanks :D
Thanks, I am sure my fish will appreciate this.
deffinitely trying this cheers to the find handy man, good tip bro
Great tip buddy...
i will try this.. Thanks man ..
very good job!
I have a smaller pump, it doesn't vibrate up against the outside walls of the case like yours, there is a substantial clearance... but when I take it apart it appears to be the sound of the magnet mechanism makes as it does it's job.
Especially since Rena advertises this line of pumps as being particularly quiet; just a tiny change would let them live up to their claims.
wow...that's amazing. Good mod!
This helped a lot thanks (:
Just a note of caution for people doing this, the exposed electrodes is mains. If you touch them, it can potentially kill you. Just be aware of that. If you mess around inside, it is best to unplug it so it is safe to work on. Think of it this way, is it really worth while risking your life to fix a noisy pump?

Of cause it is obvious to some. The note of caution is intended for those to whom it is not so obvious. A ten year old child might view this and follow the instructions without realising that the exposed connection can kill them.

As long as the air output remained good, it looks like a good way to quiet a Rena pump.
This helped a lot thank you (:

nice one. i did something similiar with felt feet but it liked to go for a wander so swapped with some really soft rubber feet. and all is well
@dmaifred

yup they liked to wander. i ended puttimg a nail in the wall and hanging it. the felt feet were against the wall so its all good. all the weight is now on the attached factory rubber hook so no noise now.
good idea man thank you
Nice sharing video dude
Thanks a lot .... much better sleep now !
you are the best , I love you
Bravo! ^_~ Gotta try this one for sure!
brrroooo tnxxxxx. now i can sleep well.... :D good night....
Cant blame that on the Chinese...the engineering is done in USA. Companies will bring down their quality to meet Walmart demand for cheap product.
I had a similar noise issue with my diaphragm pump . . .the vibration noise was traveling through the tube and into the tank through the air stone . . If I removed the stone and line from the tank, it quieted down significantly. Solution: I took a small plastic juice bottle with a wide mouth. I punched a couple of holes at opposite ends and stuck in little plastic line fittings. I wadded up cheap paper napkins and put them in the juice container to art as a baffle. Put the lid on and stuck the lines into the fittings. The noise quieted down lower than it has ever been. Those diaphragm pumps can get noisy . . this was the first time I isolated the sound of one traveling into the tank
i'll share this vid. nice!
thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!! I haven't had a decent night's sleep for months thanks to the loud thrumming from the tank. I can't switch is off at night as I have very large fish which suffer without air. I am getting my glue gun out right after I've finished typing. You are my hero!!!!!
thanks..god bless you
Old fashioned piston pumps are so much better. I oil mine once a month. Made entirely from metal and very powerful
I have an air pump that I filled up all the extra space (not interfering with the pumper) with a crap load of hot glue (like 10 sticks!) to stop resonant noise. Quieted it down about 30%, and since it's now heavier it vibrates less and transfers less vibration / noise into the table.

volvo09 I just stuck mine in a sock just far enough to cover the air tubing and it quieted down nicely. Now I fall asleep to the sound of running water.
Love how he's wearing those long-sleeved kung-fu outfits
Nice interior fix. But, why block the air cooling hole on bottom with cotton?
APS 400 for my aquarium? The humming drives me mad even with it in the cabinet under the tank. Thanks
in my case it seems to be the bubblestonnes that make the noise under water? i've tried to replace them but it doesn't help, any advice? please respond
What do you do when you need to rebuild it
Holy that's what I'm going to do with mine
Will this work with the petco brand air pumps?
Awesome
What r u using to stick that
is the video for the hearing impaired if so they wont hear the sir pump anyways
Would this work on a tetra whisper ?
nice one - now it"s silent
If anything, the air output should be slightly greater after this mod, since you're no longer wasting energy on shaking the solenoid about.
Will this work on an
Would it kill the manufacturer to put a small bit of adhesive on the motors to keep them in place?
cosmetic pads do goof for replacement filters if they are round and thin.
Why did you not speak in this?

Did you try it? I have a Hailea V-30. Currently got it in a sound isolating box, but its still quite bad. Don't feel like breaking warranty for nothing ^^
u hav watter in there
They're all noisy because they are rubbish quality. I was shocked to see how poor quality they were after buying a few on eBay to replace 20 year old tetra pumps. One of them got damaged in transit and I tried doing something similar with silicone but because the tiny little mounting pins had broken it wouldn't sit right so I scrapped them all and bought Eheim 400s which are silent straight out of the box.
Yeah, good point. I usually wear gloves for protection against accidentally brushing up against live terminals when I need the power to be on while I'm working, but my only precaution in this case was using one hand to press down on the internal components, so that any shock would travel through my finger or hand rather than across my chest.
It’s because some screws are loose
I just used to take a hammer to it. Made me happier.
how did he manage not to electrocute himself, he was close to the bare wire & as many times as i watch this video it looks like these wires are 240 volts & not transformed, Great fix though for the air pump many thanks PS are you still alive
I silence my by building a 9mm playwood box with lid and encasung the whole pump inside it - be careful to leave space and ventilation area for the pump. It is quiet. It is a diaphram pump. the one one the video is not a diaphram pump
Obnoxious that the company would sell this product without doing this first.
Voids The warranty.... Always repair using a Rena Repair Kit motors are made to be removed not glued in place

Who cares small fish pumps are cheap. Better than putting up with the noise!
It would be nice if you talked. As is we have to guess what you are doing. Just a little confusing at times. But thanks never the less.
Didn’t work at the end
Did I just see water coming out of it?
If the pump is for 30 to 60 gallons then no mercy
LOOK AT THE STATE OF YOUR EXTENSION LEAD 😱 MAYBE FIX THAT FIRST 🤷
What are These white things?
The best way to silence it is to throw it in the garbage.
That's an insane amount of noise, must be really crappy build. I have a massive 30 l/min pond pump that doesn't make a 1/10th of that racket.
Get bubblegums
I use super glue
That's still quite noisy.

10 x better tho
looks like a big computer mouse)))
What? Putting one hand inside the case is not particularly any less dangerous to your heart. The shock has to travel to ground or earth... its going through your chest regardless!

+GoF “ImNotASealImaWhale” Yourself To top it off, you reduced the units ability to move air by adding resistance with your new 'filters' (fire hazards - and when the fibers come off and into your pumps membrane its going to do some damage)

+GoF “ImNotASealImaWhale” Yourself absultely, but it will likely take the shortest path, and travel down your side. both hands at the same time could arc the circuit from one hand to the other, right through your heart.
Would it work if I put aquarium silicone there instead?

Great job.. and to all these people talking about dangerous... if you noticed, He unplugged it every time. Wires are nothing if there's no current flowing .. just stfu and pay attention to the details.
