How to silence a noisy air pump

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have an aquarium air pump that makes a terrible rattling sound, you can modify it with a few squirts of hot-melt glue, silicone or any other space-filling adhesive or sealant to be as near to silent as it's ever likely to get.
I have two Rena Air 600 air pumps (it's called a Rena Air 400 in the US), and they were both really noisy until I opened them up and modified them to stop the components inside from rattling around.
Wrapping air pumps in towels will muffle the sound, but quickly leads to overheating of the pump, which shortens it's life.

Thank for your idea. I was inspired by your vid to silence my little rattler. I used a small piece of rubber about the thickness of a mousepad to cushion the inside of my pump and it is almost silent. The bubbles in the tank are louder than the pump. Cheers

I have this exact unit and after watching this and failing to find any foam or other material the right size, I wanted to test to see if it worked in principle--so I pushed 3 Q-tips on one side and four on the other--and that worked ( : No need to get the glue gun out of storage. Thanks for the tip. Now the worst noise has been silenced.

Amazing ! Many ,many years ago people were able to communicate only by examples and everything was perfectly clear ; with time people became stupid ; the nature had had to force them starting to express themselves by another way - by talking , hours and hours , and as we know , it doesn't always helps . If you didn't understand what I meant or you didn't understand the video , a man didn't say a word - a big sorry !!!

I have a smaller pump, it doesn't vibrate up against the outside walls of the case like yours, there is a substantial clearance... but when I take it apart it appears to be the sound of the magnet mechanism makes as it does it's job.

Just a note of caution for people doing this, the exposed electrodes is mains. If you touch them, it can potentially kill you. Just be aware of that. If you mess around inside, it is best to unplug it so it is safe to work on. Think of it this way, is it really worth while risking your life to fix a noisy pump?

Of cause it is obvious to some. The note of caution is intended for those to whom it is not so obvious. A ten year old child might view this and follow the instructions without realising that the exposed connection can kill them.

I had a similar noise issue with my diaphragm pump . . .the vibration noise was traveling through the tube and into the tank through the air stone . . If I removed the stone and line from the tank, it quieted down significantly. Solution: I took a small plastic juice bottle with a wide mouth. I punched a couple of holes at opposite ends and stuck in little plastic line fittings. I wadded up cheap paper napkins and put them in the juice container to art as a baffle. Put the lid on and stuck the lines into the fittings. The noise quieted down lower than it has ever been. Those diaphragm pumps can get noisy . . this was the first time I isolated the sound of one traveling into the tank

I have an air pump that I filled up all the extra space (not interfering with the pumper) with a crap load of hot glue (like 10 sticks!) to stop resonant noise. Quieted it down about 30%, and since it's now heavier it vibrates less and transfers less vibration / noise into the table.

They're all noisy because they are rubbish quality. I was shocked to see how poor quality they were after buying a few on eBay to replace 20 year old tetra pumps. One of them got damaged in transit and I tried doing something similar with silicone but because the tiny little mounting pins had broken it wouldn't sit right so I scrapped them all and bought Eheim 400s which are silent straight out of the box.

Yeah, good point. I usually wear gloves for protection against accidentally brushing up against live terminals when I need the power to be on while I'm working, but my only precaution in this case was using one hand to press down on the internal components, so that any shock would travel through my finger or hand rather than across my chest.
