Canada means "the village" because it was colonially rewritten from the Indigenous term, "Kanata" which literally means "village". There's actually a town called Kanata in the Ottawa suburbs and that's how the colonial name "Canada" came into existence.

I wonder if it's a similar situation to how the UK ended up with 4 rivers literally named "River River", since when the Roman Empire invaded and started making maps (because they were so big on map making), they pointed at a river and asked "what's that called?" and the native UK people went "uhh... a river?" and the Romans just nodded and wrote down "River River" Or at least that's the story I've heard. So like the Europeans came to Canada and asked "what's this place called?" and the natives just said "this is a village" and the Europeans nodded and wrote that.

Belgian here! I can see how compulsory voting might be seen as annoying, and to be fair I would be annoyed too, but I've got to say they really make it super easy. You get your voting stub in the mail automatically (you don't have to register) , which tells you where to go (it's usually not farther away than a few kilometers from where you live, especially in highly populate areas and most of BE is highly populated/urbanized) and on what day. It's always on a weekend and organized in schools or sports halls etc. For me it is 2 mins away by foot lol so I do it on my way to the bakery in the morning. You can choose at what time to go, and depending on that you might wait 5 minutes up to 30 mins. Longest I've personally had to wait to cast my vote was 10 mins lol, but then again I always go early in the morning to avoid the crowds; It's super easy. If you can't go because you're on holiday/sick/... you can easily get another person to cast your vote for you, but then you do have to go to city hall to ask for it. If it weren't organized as well I would be annoyed that it was compulsory I think, but still vote, it's such a privilege to have that right!
"Ankara is the capital of Russia"
Jack: "Yeah Jack knows things" Also Jack: *Calls Turkiye Russia for the rest of the video*
He Russia instead of turkey twice
Keep up the great content, Jack! Always make me smile. :)
@0:54 actually the Mercator projection gives you a good idea how far all the land is from one another. It stretches out at the top and bottom because the Earth is globe. On the map you're looking at the continents are accurate sizes but the oceans are stretched to compensate
“ankara is the capital of Russia ” 100% going to be in the next Reddit video
2:22 Map: Thailand has not been colonized Translated to Jackanese with the Jack's vision: Myanmar has not been colonized

How many strokes can you have in a minute?! 😂 4:37
2:36 he calls Thailand Myanmar 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
3:04 this is because when asked for what the name of their country was, the first nations responded "canada," they were just inviting the europeans to their village, but it was mistook as the name of the land and it stuck.
9:13 Because there wasn’t enough room to put it in the right place so the creator of the map had to put it in the Bay of Biscay
7:38 "aw whatever" *brrrrrrnt*
poor turkey is not feeling the love
Hey Jack, I have a video idea for you. I recently bought a few flags off of temu and I thought it would be cool if you did the same and made a video about it. I bought a USA, UK, and Germany one and they are all good quality for the 2 dollars I spent on them. I hope you see this and I love your videos.

7:48 At some unknown time, the Uralic-speaking peoples migrated from Central Asia into Europe, modern day Hungary and Scandinavia, which explains why Finland and Hungary are the only countries that do this while every else does forename then surname.
this is the channel im never missing a vid
bro the fact that jack calls Thailand Myanmar at 2:46 and then 5 seconds later says,”Yes, Jack knows things!”
In Iceland we traditionally take the father’s first name and then add son/son or dóttir/daughter at the end, so for example, Jóhannsdóttir would be translated to Johanns daughter or the daughter of Johann. We also do take the mother’s first name if the father wasn’t in the picture we the baby was born
I swear Jack is never gonna run out of new titles

0:34 that’s not Mercator (Mercator is the one where Greenland is about the same size as Africa), it seems to be one of the more accurate (but still inaccurate) alternatives, I think that might be the Robinson projection.
can you make a video where you try and draw historical countries?
Hell yeah! New geography video
Beef, I don't like country music, but I will listen to that into over and over 😂 please have that be a running bit in the future
2:51 “Jack knows things” Also jack 10 seconds earlier: calls thailand myanmar
the names thing in portugal is how i always realized it, here we tend to have anywhere between 3 to 5 surnames however in some extreme cases it goes up to 7. mothers surname is always the second to last while father's is predominant as the last
"Is that Liberia? Yeah, Jack knows things!" Also him 5 seconds ago, calling Thailand Myanmar.
One of the funniest stories I have ever heard is that the reason New South Wales is called that is because when explorers sailed past it, the barren lifeless and dull landscape reminded them of south wales.
4:51 thanks for missing out Norway the part i was waiting for
2:47 my dear jack, that Is Thailand.... Also jack 3 sec later: " i know things!! "
I, like jack, do also believe that these maps are of my upmost interest at this current point in time and possibly for the time onwards.
6:34 Jack your knowledge is astounding
I do feel voting should be compulsory, with all the possible ways to make voting easier. (national holiday where everything is closed at least half the day, mail-in ballots sent to all possible voters, absolutely no restriction on voting other than requiring proof of citizenship, etc) In the US, even though we are seen as rather politically charged (especially because of our "us vs them" two party system that only grows animosity), there is only 50-60% turnout in presidential election years and 40% or less for midterm election years.

I think i know why at 1:02 there is differences in Germany. So after WWII they divided germany into west and east one of the maps saying "graffiti" east germany was darker its probably the wall (also they didn't let people into the west or east so thats probably why there is tons of immigrants in west germany) idk maybe a thought

jack: sees unequal map also jack: thats the mercator projection (there are other inaccurate map types) 0:35
0:34 Bro just called the equirectangular projection the Mercator projection 💀💀💀
2:25 "generally speaking rather positive mottos" meanwhile virginia: "overthrow and k!ll tyrants"
That Þýskaland Þ is an old letter called Thorn that makes a TH sound still used in Icelandic that used to be used in a lot of languages like old English, it was derived from the rune of the same name, so that would be “th-ee-ska-Lond” I believe.
I love how he just calls turkey “Russia” for the entire video
Countries with compulsory voting generally also make it as simple as possible to vote, because the point is to encourage voting rather than punish not voting
Quick Cold War lesson: Basically Germany got taken over by the USSR and allied powers (uk, USA France) east Germany was controlled by the communist USSR and the west was controlled by the allied powers (each had a third). Essentially Berlin was cut in half and so was the rest of Germany in the same sections. If you go to Berlin you will be able to see the divide because the west funded their half far more than the communists funded their side so the east is far more visibly deprived. Also: The war eventually expanded into like a real war bc it was not like REAL war when in Germany, neither side actually attacked bc they both had the ability to demolish the other side in minutes. It was extremely near this point many times but luckily never got there I will update this more once I’ve revised it a bit
FYI, our state motto here in Iowa is also on our state flag on a ribbon held in the beak of an eagle.
"Ankara Capital of Russia" I'm laughing my Socks off
