Maple Grove Cemetery RAIN WALK • Tranquil Sounds • 10/5/23 • Queens, NY

In keeping with the spooky season vibes, I figured it’s a good time to walk some cemeteries. Even more so on a rainy day. There’s so much historical information to see in these places just by reading the headstones, plus it’s really peaceful and calming. I don’t see it as a gloomy place at all. It’s a little spooky, but it’s also cool to see sculpted memorials for people from over the years. All the names. Especially ones from the 19th century. Kind of gives you some perspective on your own life in a way.
This cemetery is Maple Grove, which is in the Kew Gardens section of Queens, NY. Maple Grove Cemetery was established by a group of six Brooklyn businessmen in 1875 - late in the period of rural cemetery development. Until that time most rural cemeteries were created through the purchase of large tracts of land by private citizens. However, under the leadership of William Cogswell, the six businessmen cleverly purchased 75 acres of undeveloped land in Jamaica and Newtown from Mary A. Webb, in exchange for one half the proceeds from the sale of burial lots. The benefit to the newly formed Maple Grove Cemetery Association was that it would not have to raise funds ahead of time to purchase the land.
The rural cemetery movement emerged in the United States during the 1830’s as urban areas grappled with the public health concerns related to overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions. These challenges, combined with a sense of nostalgia for the quiet beauty of the countryside, led to the establishment of so-called garden, or rural, cemeteries outside the cities. Mt. Auburn Cemetery was the first such cemetery to be established (1831) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Through the years it has stood as a model for the development of many cemeteries across the country.

Yes, cemeteries are very calming. I like that they have sidewalk trails throughout the grounds. Interesting how family members had their individual stones with their age. Thanks for the walk on a rainy day that added to the ambience!

What a beautiful old cemetery. The trees there are older than the cemetery I think, and those huge old hydrangeas. I love to see the old headstones and dates, older is better, just to think back of those times and how they might have lived. Thanks Paul, glad you did this.

You’re welcome! Calvary is definitely a good one visually based on the entrance gate design and the view of Manhattan alone.

@@paulsportal1720 Agree! Visually it is worth exploring . It’s such a part of NYC. From the cholera epidemic to the Godfather scene, lots of interesting history. Including my family's own through the generations. My sisters who left NY are loving your videos too. Thanks for doing them!
