Classic line
This song is about My country, Spanish civil war 1936-39.
I remember the anticipation in waiting for the new album and lead single after becoming a huge fan on hearing EMG. This single exceeded my expectations..pure perfection lyrically and musically….I think fans and non fans alike can appreciate the quality of this tune and the message it conveys in the apathetic and individualistic society we live in even now…long gone are the days of idealistic people going to fight wars in foreign lands that are not related to them directly in order to protect the future of their children..
I saw an interview with James Dean Bradfield and he said this song was a tribute to The Spanish Republic and The Clash. The title is taken from a Spanish Civil War era poster which showed Francos Air Force bombing Barcelona with the statement "If you tolerate this then your children will be next" How prophetic that poster was as the children of Warsaw, Rotterdam, London, Coventry, Stalingrad, Caen,Berlin and Dresden were soon to find out.
Their first number 1 hit too.
Seen them live 17 times so far. My brother has seen them over 30 times!

I saw them at the first T in the Park in 1994 in a huge tent. I was on microdot LSD and that tent was the hottest place I have ever been. What a day..The Manics, The Levellers, Cypress Hill and Rage Against The Machine.
I lived in Cardiff around that time and met JDB, seriously one of the nicest guys I've ever met.
this song was my twins favourite song and she is longer with me and everytime i hear this song it makes me cry tears of joy! so thank you both for bringing a little joy into my morning!
Sometimes it's nice being Welsh
The Manics are undoubtedly a ‘Thinking Man’s Band’. Been a fan since they first started, brilliant band!!
One of the most powerful anti-Nazi, anti-fascist songs ever written.
Welsh poet's spitting fire.....
Journal for plague lovers 👍🏴👍
As my dear departed grandma used to say. "If you can`t bring yourself to say something nice, shut the fuck up." God rest her soul.
I was only chatting to Dave Eringa record producer with Manic Street Preachers on Monday! great bloke and he produced and engineered If you tolerate this your children will be next. I asked if I could obtain his autograph.. he said he would love to sign my vinyl!! mind blown how I achieved this.. but done! - C
I really like this band.
MASTERPIECE.
British music from about 93-99 was incredible. Could give you so many bands to check out who were epic in this period

@@IntoTheWhite04 oh dear, how I wish I could seem them live once, but Austria is not a very interesting country to tour for many bands I enjoy. With the Brexit regulations I am afraid we will see even less UK acts on the continent from now on.
Only number 1 ever about the Spanish civil war
My favourite song EVER!!! ❤
Love it - just love your talky bits....!
Great song - great reaction, lads. Cheers.

This song is very appropriate for times we live in.
9:59 I used to do that with Bowie almost every time. I was always wrong. Also Gold Against the Soul is my favorite Manics and I know to most that's crazy talk🤙

You didn't mention The Spanish Civil War, which is what the song is about.

You did though
During Agent Smith's interrogation of Mr Anderson, the Matrix seals his mouth up. The Manics did something similar a year earlier in this video.

Welcome to the dead zone should have been on the album
It's already happening
still have the single cd release in the paper wallet too.
Who ever thought you could write and perform a song about the Spanish civil war? And it be a bestseller! MSP for life - the most meaningful, political bands to come out of the UK since the 70s, by far!
I was 5 years old back then in 98
How about another Manic street preachers reaction? 😊 No surface all feeling Motown junk Ready for drowning Nobody loved you Slash and burn 5 for you there!
The lyrics are even better than you first assumed. The title of the song was used in a campaign in the UK to recruit volunteers to fight the dictator Franco images.app.goo.gl/e5UDKx4RtaBCnYsE7 In essence the writer is discussing his respect for these people who left Wales to fight Franco and who understood the threat to the future of their children…they saw the threat that these fascist dictators held..appeasement never stopped Hitler.. Again I think your friend would enjoy the depth to the song Kevin Carter also which I actually didn’t like until the 3rd listen..it’s now probably my fav song along with this of theirs
The girl who wanted to be God
Top 5 manics song
Great channel, be interesting to see you react to a track off Journal for Plague Lovers - as I haven't come across anyone do this.

1998!
This song came out a month after the IRA bombing of Omagh. Which was why it hit me so much with the themes that the song has.

Great point Tracey…that song title also was a very prophetic statement for that really tragic event..i feel the lowest point of the troubles…but in affect it was so bad it was not long before all the splinter groups disbanded…there was never going to be a winner on any side but just more innocent victims..
Talking about words you don't understand, why don' YOU understand the lyrics are about the Spanish Civil War!
