This song is about the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's against fascism. The Manics are a great band, thanks for checking them out!

😢 heartbreaking song

It was a warning if you tolerate this your children will be next... they are next! it's about the spanish civil war as well I chatted to the drummer in the video! nice bloke! I have their autographs too! react to The masses against the classes by them next! MUCH heavier.

I find the lyric ‘And on the street tonight, an old man plays/ With newspaper cuttings of his glory days’ Utterly poignant and heartbreaking.

@@thesound-chameleonman3580 That, like many veterans, he is now an old man, with nothing but memories, maybe the only one left from all his comrades. I once looked after an old man in hospital, who had lived a rich life. He had been a pilot who had ended his career as a training captain for British Airways, but he had started in the Fleet Air Arm. He had flown in the Pacific in WW2 from carriers, and told me once ‘do you know, I shot down my first Japanese aircraft on my 19th birthday…’ These people did amazing things- you and I will never be like them- but nobody knows because they are just old, and no longer relevant. We should look at what they were, not what they have done now. Look up another Manics song, La Tristesse Durera, another one about how veterans are treated- feted and applauded on Remembrance Day but forgotten, irrelevant and reduced to selling their medals the other 364 days of the year.

They just performed it for the charity concert for Ukraine last night on ITV network ... the message on the backdrop screen was very clear for all to see in bright green letters repeated 'If you tolerate this your children will be next' Very very important relevant band with historical meaning lyrics prescient to today's world, God bless them 🙏 🙏 🙏

Its a song about the Spanish civil war and the fight against fascism. The west did not give a shit about Ukraine for the last 8 years when the neo nazi infiltrated coup government of Ukraine committed atrocities daily against the people of east Ukraine. To play this song in support for a nazi government is fucking rediculous. Zelensky has outlawed political opposition along with opposition media. One of the network not banned that is owned by Ukraines richest person had a show host call for the murder of Russian children and said that he upholds the doctrine of Adolph Eichman who was one of the main architects of the holocaust. Thats the people the west is defending right now, but at the same time dont give a shit about the genocide in Yemen or the genocide in Palestine. Fuck nazis, fuck fascism and everyone who defends it.

@@gromgardenlor of course, there was the Spanish Civil War as a backdrop theme to it, but there is still a greater overall meaning to the song than just that , its why its timeless ..just the opening two lines makes it that .. : 'The future teaches you to be alone, the present to be afraid and cold' 👍

@@SandraSampsonColdfeet , haven't read the lyrics either, but from what I got from what I understood and the visuals it's also a warning of ongoing transhumanism, some powers trying to construct and install "machine-men" being easy to control and exploit, and actually we're closer to that than ever... functioning bio-robots without true emotion and empathy, just responding on directions and orders fed to them by the media, totally controlled, tracked and steared...

A recommendation of Three songs they have done with the same sort of vibe, The everlasting (1998), Let Robson sing(2001) and Golden platitudes(2010) but there is many more with impactful lyrics where the underlining message still seems poignant today

Richey Edwards WAS in this band early on, yes the MISSING rock star NOW sadly part of the 27 club. James Dean Bradfield's vocals are amazing here, echoes of Freddie Mercury in there.

When they perform live, he always does a solo interval where he does a couple of their song stripped bare to just him and a guitar. He does songs you’d never imagine could be done that way, I saw him do ‘Yes’ once. But when he does If You Tolerate This, it makes your skin tingle. For a real example of how good a singer he is, try listening to Ocean Spray, and Small Black Flowers That Grow in the Sky.

Nice Review of this classic song. The title of the song comes from a propaganda poster for recruiting volunteers to fight the fascist dictator Franco in Spain in the 1930s. The band are paying tribute to those people who fought and foresaw the danger of the rise in fascism in Europe at that time. They also hint in the song that they do not think they would have the same courage and conviction to do so themselves. I think there is also a lesson in the song that it is sometimes very necessary to fight against something that could destroy the future of our children..many examples of this even in today’s society. It’s a really wonderful thoughtful song and is probably one of my favorite songs ever.

I've copied this from Wikipedia to explain what the song is about: The song's theme is inspired by the Spanish Civil War, and the idealism of Welsh volunteers who joined the left-wing International Brigades fighting for the Spanish Republic against Francisco Franco's military rebels. The song takes its name from a Republican propaganda poster of the time written in English and displaying a photograph of a dead young child killed by the Nationalists, under a sky filled with bomber aircraft, with the song's titular warning written at the bottom.[3] Various real-life events from the Spanish Civil War provided inspiration for the lyrics. For example, the line "If I can shoot rabbits/then I can shoot fascists" is attributed to a remark made by a man to his brother who signed up with the Republican fighters. This was originally quoted in the book Miners Against Fascism by Hywel Francis. Another line, "I've walked Las Ramblas/but not with real intent", brings to mind the account in George Orwell's first-hand account of the war, Homage to Catalonia, of fighting on the Ramblas. Discrimination isn't the issue, its prejudice. "To be a man of discriminating tastes" used to mean that you sought out the very best. Btw, the Manics are among the very best.
