Alex Stepney’s ‘save’ at 5:31 that David Coleman kept waffling on about, hit him squarely in the face. Peter Simpson missed a golden chance, but Stepney knew bugger all about the save!

LOL, like Bobby's shot earlier on, in which David described a miss by 20+ yards as a miss 'by inches'!

I was at this match as a young ManU season ticket holder sitting in the stand opposite, and can remember the animosity between Denis Law and Ian Ure very clearly - how on earth they lasted on the pitch till the 80th minute I don't know! Frightening challenges all match, no kidding. Then ironically, Ian Ure transferred to ManU and did a great job holding the defence together for a year or two.

I don't think Ure was ever appreciated by United fans. Busby rated him, but Wilf McGuiness did not. I know whose view I'd respect more.

I was at that game too as an 8 year old. The only thing I remember about the game itself was Law and Ure being sent off and the final result. Though my Dad and me were Man Utd supporters we travelled back to London on the Arsenal supporters train. I ended up with a programme signed by the Arsenal team. I went to the game at Highbury that season too which United won 2-0.

What a line-up that United side was and the Arsenal line-up wasn't bad either.

I remember this game well, Ure and Law were suspended for six weeks and in those days the clubs didn't pay the players if they were under suspension . Other things worth looking out for, Arsenal playing in a strange dark blue shirt, George Best's tash, (he obviously had just bought a copy of The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper) Also nice seeing in goal for Arsenal the legend Jim "Fingers" Furnell a goalkeeper that would give supporters heart failure every time he touched the ball! .

Both Ian Ure and Denis Law are still with us, both men well into their 80s

Tavy@ what a game. I couldnt believe that save alex stepney made at 5.01 that is one if not the best save i have ever saw. That player had so much time and space just to put the ball away, it was really him against stepney but with the odds at 80,20 against stepney. At first i thought he had scored, then i thought he had just missesd it by the post by inches, i couldnt believe that alex managed to save that with his face. They talk about the gordon banks save against pele. But lets be honest its not as brilliant as this. These kind of saves are by far always the hardest and best. Becouse its the easiest chance a player will get to score. The ball is put on a plate for him just to score with loads of time and space and he belted hit. He didnt have to go up and header it down wich is much easier for any keeper. The thing is there were lots of keepers at that time who would have also have saved the pele header. But george best just made banks look really average and a bit daft loads of times over the years. George sorted banks out no problem and in the most brilliant ways. In 1971 alone george scored at least 7 great goals against gordon, his best isnt on camera. When he beat 4 players in the space of 10 yards inside the box and nutmegged one of them then it was just him and gordon, gordon said in his autobiography that george was left with just me as he beat 4 players in such a short space then made a quick burst of speed just over 6 yards and hes facing me? Now a goal keeper must look at the ball not the player but with george its harder than that as he went to shoot hard and fast to then just stop his boot dead on the ball and i am still standing watching the ball in the mud then george puts his left boot on the ball as if to place the shot but then uses his right boot to drag the ball to his left side as i am still following him but i am basicly on my heels and rocking back and forth like a toy soldier as george then moves in closer to me and as he does it he drops his right shoulder so far down but still moving but he got slower and then i just fell to my left as i really thought george was going to his right to go past by me. And as am lieying in the mud he just waltzes round me and puts it away, then he just put one arm up. It was the greatest goal ever scored against me. It was at home at victoria road. I have photos of that goal up on the wall in my study, aka a room or office of work. And every time l look at it i still dont know how he managed to do it. How he beat 4 players in spectacular style inside my box over the space of 10 yards he just went past two as he drew them in to tackle him and then he pulled the ball back as they went sliding past him as george did a shimmy your sister kate would have been proud of then the 3rd player didnt dive in but he didnt need too as george put it through his legs then cleverly got infront of him so he couldnt tackle him hard or it would end up a penalty as he knew and the whole crowd knew that he would have to push george down to get the ball and he didnt want to do that, so the 4th player put himself up, george duly obliged as he sent him 3 different ways without touching the ball then walked past him as if he wasnt there. And that left him and me as i said earlier a was made to look the biggest fool as i can use my hands too, but that doesnt matter to george he likes it that way as i scrambled all about my 6 yard box and i knew what he was going to do but you couldnt do anything as playing against him is so different in the flesh, than what you see on tv. George was just a footballing genius. You had to expect the unexpected when you played against him. Rip george rip banksy.

The days when it was considered a matter of shame to be sent off. Now the crowd cheer them as if they've done something to be proud of.

Neutral here: What a save by Alex Stepney at 05:33! Absolutely outstanding and from point blank range!

Big Yogi Ure, along with Gillie one of my boyhood heroes.

No wonder Ian Ure was never a favourite of the Stretford End during his time at United.

The only thing Ure did for me was score against liverpool when they won 4-1 . Other then that I never rated him . I would of love to have heard what was being said down the tunnel when Denis and Ure were heading back to the dressing rooms .

I just love the fact that Law got cracked in the head with a right hook, and the guy never even got sent off. The guy walked off like he knew he was only going to get a yellow. lol

This was FOOTBALL👍👍 .The amount of fans, the atmosphere,quality of Players and Football(played with a Hard Ball and Pitches more suitable for Farm Animals) And yet the game was played hard&tough with full on commitment...But I suppose if u want or prefer "Football Pantomime" then u "Dig" today's manicured,slick production.. And I nearly forgot,always great to see those "Gooners" get turned over👍☘️ .

For those of you watching in B&W, Arsenal are playing in dark blue jerseys.

Denis Law... a great goalscorer, but a dirty little bugger - you just saw him rake down Ian Ure's achilles as Ure passed the ball, and it was obviously intentional. Not only international colleagues, but Ure also ended up at Old Trafford a few years later.

@@gregod806 Fair point, but Ian Ure was more obvious with his clattering, and the resulting kerfuffle should have been the end of the matter. Law was class but sneaky, whereas Ian Ure was an awkward and gaffe-prone journeyman. Arsenal did well to off-load him to Old Trafford at a profit, because he was a walking disaster!

I know there were better centre halves than Ian Ure, but he couldn't have been that bad could he? he had a few bad injuries including 2 broken jaws in his career (it was big enough😂) he went onto become a social worker for convicts after leaving the game.

@@gregod806 😂 I have to agree with you; he did seem to attract disaster, but he was an international, and his career after football was laudable. It's just I first went to Highbury as a 6 year-old with my Dad in September 1962, and the first time we even sniffed success was against (then) Third Division Swindon Town in the 1969 League Cup Final... Don Rogers ran us ragged, the pitch was like a ploughed field, and Ian Ure had one of his stinkers. It scarred me!! I was the only Arsenal fan in my school...🤦‍♂️

Denis Law was not a dirty player. He took a huge amount of punishment from tough defenders, and was given very little protection by referees. Then when he retaliated in self-defence, he got suspended.

Law and Ure both got a six-week suspension for what was basically handbags. Typical FA, incapable of telling heat of the moment clashes from dirty play.

@@ysgol3 You can see Law stamping down around Ure's achilles. It was a nasty foul. I'd have liked to see what happened afterwards. I assume Ure hit law.

Goal by Aston assisted by Crerand. Just illustrates how inaccurate and unfair the " Best Law and Charlton Trinity " stuff was. No champion team is ever a 3 man team.

unfair if that sort of statement was about one game, but those three had something special. i'm guessing you were not around in those days to appreciate them. i was. having said that, true UNITED supporters/fans knew the worth of every player in the team/squad. no player was knowingly undervalued or underappreciated. and as a club everyone who worked for or at the club, whatever or wherever, was included in the appreciation when the accolades were given.

crerand was a superb midfielder in an era of sublime midfielders ,Collins, mackay bremner , giles, Murdoch, baxter , Haynes, ball ,Hudson, Charlton.

No one ever said they were a three-man team. There was talent running all through the team. Stepney, a great keeper who would have been an England regular in a different era, Tony Dunne, best left-back in Britain, Paddy Crerand the brains and creative force in the team, Nobby Stiles could mark anybody out of the game, Brian Kidd, a great talent ultimately unfulfilled at United. But Best, Law and Charlton were special.

@@joekavanagh7171 Nicely put. Crerand was pure class. Wonderful passer. Stiles wasn't just a tough tackler but a clever reader of the game and his distribution was usually accurate.

Possibly not. Half the people born in 1938 are still alive which equates to 29 years old in 1967 and football crowds are generally younger than the average.

Charleton class all the way. Arsenal, classless yobs all the way. I mean really, one of their star players wanted a move due to a pay dispute way back then? What a joke, just like they are now!
