great game. huge change in the way players celebrate from today isn't it? None of the mobbing of the scorer, no excessive celebrations by the scorer

27 September 1969 was the date. This must have been one of the first league games broadcast in colour.

This was on BBC1, so would have been broadcast in B&W. The first colour edition of MOTD on BBC1 was on 15 Nov '69. The first edition of MOTD broadcast in colour was on 29 April '69, on BBC2. There are a couple of other matches made but not broadcast in colour - Leeds Utd v Leicester City, on 19 April '69 and Manchester City v Stoke City on 23 Aug '69. The earliest colour broadcast was the 1968 FA Cup final, which was broadcast live on both BBC1 and BBC2.

Not only did Man Utd fail to sign Mike England but Alan Ball says in his autobiography that when he was transfer listed by Everton, Utd were asked if they were interested & said no. By 1970, out of the 68 team, Foulkes was 38, Charlton 33, Brennan 33, Crerand 31 & Law 30. Lookin back now you can almost understand, as seasons went by without quality replacements, why George Best got disillusioned and fed up & lost his way.The first quality signing, apart from Morgan was not until 1972 (Buchan).

I grew up on the legends of the players United missed out on in the 1980s - Shilton, Butcher, Lineker, Gascoigne (and Platt and Beardsley, who they HAD but let go!). Just imagine the team they could have had with them alongside Robson, McGrath, Hughes, Whiteside and the rest. I think in the late 1960s and early 1970s the club was run by blinkered fools, to be honest.

Tavy@ The George Best header from 13 to 15 yards out and to out jump two defenders and then put the ball into the bottom corner the goal keeper was well beaten as best timed hes jump to perfection to beat 2 defenders before he put the ball neatly away! Best knew it, the crowd knew it, and the defence and goal keeper knew it. Wich shows that best was the complete player ever seen!!! R.I.P GEORGE. AND THANCKS

When United signed Ian Ure it was only about the 2nd signing in 6 years or so. Willie Morgan from Burnley being the other. With Ure at least United had a centre half, Bill Foulkes having thrown his boots across the dressing room in disgust and announcing he was packing it in after Ron Davies scored 4 headers in a 1-4 Old Trafford defeat to Southampton. No one could understand why Mike England had been allowed to move from Blackburn to Spurs a few years earlier without United bidding.

It's amazing how the club basically refused to sign players in the late 1960s/early 1970s. I know there was much more of a culture of bringing your own players through in those days, but even so it was obvious that United's squad was deeply inadequate and getting worse. You could see the relegation coming from 1970 or even 1969 but they sleepwalked into it. Crazy mismanagement.

@gary wood. Charlton wasnt even in the best 30 players of all time. Yes he was great, but he was never thee best and far from it. George best was the best. Bobby couldnt play on the wing, as that was his first position for man utd. Then matt got george best and he could play on the wing and he scored 28 leauge goals in 1968 to be the english leauges top scorer, wich was unheard of at that time for a winger, as best had to always beat men to score. Bobby could never do that as a winger becouse he hadnt the speed and couldnt dribble the way best could and finish from impossible angles plus best was alot braver and harder. In short george was a much better player than bobby. Even bobby admitted he was glad best was so good on the wing as it got bobby into the middle of the park. Bobbys best position was midfield. But bobby charlton was brilliant in that position. Its hard to believe that a player as great as bobby wasnt that good as a winger. But george best was the only player in the world that could play in any position, and be the best player there. So thats why hes the best ever. But franz beckenbauer was another player that could play in any position to. But he wasnt as good as best was. Pele probably could have played in any position to becouse he was so great. Only true naturaly gifted players can play in any position and be the best player there, yes theres alot that could do it but they wouldnt be the best there. As in messi would never be the best at centre half or right back and left back. So for me its george best, beckenbuaer and pele and thats where it stops. But the greatest i have seen as a player is george best, maradona then pele. I thought beckenbuaer was better than cruyff. Beckenbuaer won a world cup against cruyffs holland, and when you watch that match alone its so easy to see just how brilliant and better beckenbuaer is compared to cruyff. He strolled about the park as if he ownend it and hit 50 yard passes all over the park and nice short passes too, then dribbles and runs, i had forgot that cruyff was even on the park. I thought he had been taken off after 15 minutes becouse i couldnt see him or hear his name once, after they got a penalty in the first minute.

I adore watching George Best but the commentator goes way over the top praising his assist for United's 5th goal. He controlled the ball well, made space and picked his pass well....all excellent but by no means out of this world or beyond many players. A routine assist praised simply because it was Best who did it.

Tavy@ what was that George best header like from 13 to 15 yards out? The timing of it to leave his marker then put into the bottom corner of the net with the keeper so help less looking even after hes dive. Best must of jumpend about 3ft into the air. 2 keepers wouldnt have saved that. Its one of the best headed goals i have ever seen! When balls were heavier. But it was george best after all. Then the jinx to set up kidds goal was magic. Could you imagine maradona scoring a header like that one lol he wouldnt even attempt it from so far out never mind score it.

He said when he went for the medical even though his injuries were no secret the United physio asked him to bend his leg a few times and when he did said "That'll do" and sanctioned the signing. Amazing to think how slack and unprofessional a top club like United were run then !!

I love Diego but if amazes me how often people forget just how limiting his inability to use his right foot was. That limitation was the main weapon defenders had against him.
