Dogma is TERRIFYING, when you're a kid at some parts. But it's so good.
The "Brenda ?" line from sailboat guy to Rene was a reference to actress Shannon Doherty's famous tv role as Brenda in "Beverley Hills 90210", a 90s teen pop-culture phenomena.
Not only is Stan Lee in this, in his cameo for Captain Marvel he's reading the script for Mallrats

There's no accounting for taste, but EMPIRE RECORDS sucks. I was in retail in the 90s, and EMPIRE is nowhere near as accurate about that kind of job as HIGH FIDELITY or CLERKS. And I'm surprised you think it's not popular because I see so many people online and IRL who love it, so I figured it was a cult classic.

@@Theomite Empire Records is a great film. Who cares how "accuate" it is? We just reacted to a film where Stan Lee gives emotional relationship advice to random college kids because their friend asked nicely, then casually strolls all over the mall un-accosted l. Empire had a LOT of stars before they were stars. It isn't popular, primarily because it was a sleeper film that many still just have never heard of. Why did I never think about the fact that Earl and Randy are standing side by side and doing this movie together ? Who knew that they (Jason and Ethan) would end up doing the hit TV series “My Name Is Earl” together, 10 years later? Shanelle, you have no idea how deep the history goes with the cast and Kevin Smith. Some of the extras in both this movie and Clerks were on the TV series “Comic Book Men.” Which, by the way, was a great show. To name a few: Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Brian O’Halloran, Mike Zapzic and Scott Mosier, Kevin’s right hand man and producer plays some parts as well. Everybody is invited and there is a long ass history.

As much as i love Earl, randy and everyone - Joy was a standout on that show for me - the shit that came out of her mouth.
His movies do connect, and not just by being set in the same part of Jersey or having Jay and Silent Bob show up. The contestant played by the same actor who played Dante in "Clerks" is called Gil Hicks, which is also Dante's last name, so he's implied to be his brother or at least a close relative. The girl who drowned because T.S. called her fat is the same girl whose funeral Dante and Randall attend in "Clerks," and so on. Characters in his movies tend to know each other or be related in some way, such as one of the main characters in "Chasing Amy" being the sister of Trish, the girl doing the weird sex study, and also of the girl in "Clerks" who hooks up with the guy who claims to be gym trainer and calls Dante fat and out of shape.

Don't know if anyone else mentioned it or not yet, but Suzanne the Orangutan is in the movie because Kevin Smith was shocked at what the major studio would give him just from asking, so to test that he decided to ask them for an orangutan, and he got it. But he didn't really have anything in the script for it so he put the clip in at the end of walking off hand in hand with her.

And when the credits rolled and I saw I shared the same name as that absolute weenie from the dating show I just about collapsed on the floor laughing😂I do like quite a few of Kevin Smith's movies, but I've only seen them the once, so I'm not a die-hard fan. And so when I'm online, every so often someone will make a Clerks reference that'll go right over my head. They'll shout out "37!" or "I'm not even supposed to be here today!" at me and I'll be dumbfounded at first. AH! I actually squealed when I saw this! Nobody does Mallrats, and I freakin love this movie. The gerbil jokes were beaten to death in the 90s due to the Richard Gear thing. Everyone made those jokes, lol. +1 on Dogma too, I had a wicked crush on Affleck from that movie. I did not get that vibe from this one, lol. I don't know, I was 19, it was the 90s... it was a weird time for me. I also love Chasing Amy. Smith movies are pure angsty charm and really exemplify the 90s, IMO.
Kevin Smith recently completed production on the 430 Movie which takes place in a multiplex theater set in 1986. He's currently writing another Jay & Silent Bob film.
Well.. if you like this one... The sequel "Twilight Of The Mallrats" is in (Pre-Production) right now! 😊

This was a pleasant surprise, I don't think I've seen anyone react to it.. I've loved this film forever, it's unfortunately a film that never caught on and almost feels forgotten.. it's such an underrated film and probably my favorite Kevin Smith film..
I worked in a video rental store in the mid nineties. I got to open the shop Saturdays, so every Saturday morning, I'd pop in Mallrats. Must have seen it a hundred times.
Ever since I saw this movie years ago, everytime into a mall in the morning, I ALWAYS shout "I LOVE THE SMELL OF COMMERCE IN THE MORNING
This is my favorite one of the movies from the askewniverse for emotional reasons. The first time I saw this was on DVD at my "friend" Britt's house, we liked each other but were involved with other people at the time, eventually we got our heads on straight and got together. Even though nothing happened, I consider this our first date, and we just had our 22nd wedding anniversary two months ago!
Continuity wise this takes place the day before 'Clerks'. Julie Dwyer, the girl who died in the pool was one of Dante's ex-girlfriend's and Dante and Randal go to her wake in 'Clerks' (not we see it.) Randal also mentioned his late Cousin Walter with the implication Randal and Brodie are cousins. Brian O'Halloran who played Dante Hicks in 'Clerks' plays Gil Hicks ('Suitor #3') here, presumably Dante's relative.
In Captain Marvel, Stan Lee's cameo is him reading the Mallrats script 😊 trying to memorize it for the shoot lol
Fun Fact: because this was a bigger budget, Universal studio didn't want Jason Mewes to be Jay, as they wanted someone up and coming and bankable, in this case, Seth Green. As a result Jason Mewes had to audition to get the part.
Bryan Johnson, the basis for the video store clerk, is in this movie. And the famous line "Tell 'em Steve Dave"
"I'm nostalgic for a past that wasn't even mine." You just summed up my life xoxo
If you remember in Captain Marvel, the Stan Lee cameo, he is trying to memorize his lines for Mallrats on the train, which is funny cause he c couldn't remember them for the movie. Also, Mr. Svenning is played by Michael Rooker who played Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy.
It seems strange that there's only eleven years between Fast Times and Dazed and Confused.

It's always kind of amusing when younger people today watch movies from back then and consider the vocabularies to be next-level. We all had the words. We just weren't as pretentious as Kevin Smith's writing sometimes was. This was actually something that eventually drew a lot of shade. Dawson's Creek was well known for this kind of dialog as well.
Ah, the Eden Prairie Mall in Eden Prairie, MN. I know it well, from this era before the remodel. Movie brings back a lot of memories, not just because of that, but the dozens of sleepovers where we watched it multiple times.
I actually worked security, briefly, at the Eden Prairie mall where this was filmed, back in the late 2000s! It looked quite a bit different though!
In Stan Lee's final MCU cameo (Captain Marvel), he's actually on the bus on his way to film his Mallrats cameo, holding the script and practicing his lines. Kevin Smith provided cut audio from Mallrats to use for Stan's voice in Captain Marvel.
Been trying to suggest this to reacters for ages. Thanks for doing it.
1995 was before the first X-Men movie. Stan Lee was an easy get - promoting Marvel and Stan Lee was his full-time job. In 2002, Kevin did a very long interview of Stan for "Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters & Marvels".
I once wrote a script for my daughter called Metal Queen. And it was amazing. Young girl bullied for being a Heavy Metal fan.then her father got together with her friends and started a metal band.
These characters are exactly the kinds of people that hung out in coffee shops in portland in the 1990s smart people with no plans.
I just stumbled across your channel this afternoon on the way to other reactions. I love what you got out of the two Smith films so far, and I just finished watching your Back to the Future trilogy. 5 reactions in and I’d like to share with you: I hope you keep chasing your ambitions. After seeing your love of the BTTF films, and how they touched you, I want to see your heart on the screen. You have obvious knowledge about how this film stuff works, yet still allow yourself to be moved by beautiful things. I think this makes a lovely combination which I want so much for you to share with us through your own creative efforts. Good luck!!!
Every movie by Kevin Smith is dialogue gold. Even his bad movies still have great dialogue.
The next film, Chasing Amy, is way deeper and probably the most emotional and serious of all of Kevin Smith’s movies. You should definitely check it out, it’s a great flick.
Seeing people geeking out over Stan's cameo in all the Marvel movies always made me think, '' if they only saw 'Mallrats'......''.
Fun fact, the scene where Kevin Smith Silent Bob gets his head stuck in Joey Lauren Adams' changing room took long enough to film that they hit it off and dated for a while. Some aspects of that relationship wound up making it into Chasing Amy, starring Adams, after they ended the romance (though they remain friends to this day).
This is supposed to take place the day before Clerks. The girl who died in the swimming pool doing laps, is the girl who's funeral Dante and Randal went to. In Captain Marvel, Stan Lee is seen reading the script for his part in Mallrats.
Miss being at the malls in the 90’s at the comic store in San Diego… this movie fits how life was back then. Arcades, comics, Suncoast, Sam Goody….can’t wait to see how Mallrats 2 works in todays world
There's a book series that bridges the gap between Chasing Amy and Dogma. Those depict what happened with Suzanne.
11:31 - LOL! I love these Shanellisms! 🤣🤣🤣
I work in the city they shot this movie in. I visit that mall food court often. Looks different now but some stuff still remains. I tried the chocolate covered pretzels.
The first magic eye they show isn't a sailboat (schooner) but a bunch of shapes in a grid formation floating at various heights. I love magic eye.
"THAT KID IS BACK ON THE ESCALATOR AGAIN!"
Glad to see you go further in this series. Here's a couple of bits I don't think you mentioned after the trivia section. Brian O'Halloran played Gil Hicks, whom they joked in the DVD commentary was Dante's identical cousin. Also, if you ever want to rewatch this, I recommend trying to find the DVD/Blu Ray as the commentary tracks are awesome. This was one of Stan Lee's earliest movie appearances. He would of course become known to the younger generation for appearing in all of the Marvel movies. Of the final scenes that Lee shot before passing was in Captain Marvel. As you noted with his cue cards in this movie, Stan had trouble delivering his few lines. Smith was able to provide audio from unused takes from this movie to clean up the audio. Kevin Smith was dating Joey Adams when this was made. So Silent Bob accidentally seeing Gwen naked so much was more funny. There is another cut of this movie that is about 45 minutes longer and has an entirely new (well, old) opening scene. It didn't test well, so the movie was rewritten and some shots were done late to make a new cut. I look forward to Chasing Amy next. I used to say it was in my top-3 movies of all time, but it has slipped a bit and I'm curious to see how you'll enjoy it.
This movie will always have a special place in my heart, as it was my first experience with Kevin Smith and the first girl I kind of liked in high school who showed it to me (I had to watch it again by myself with a dictionary afterwards but beside the point). Can't wait for you to see the others. CHASING AMY was a little emotional for me at the time, but definitely an important film, a whole cultural moment going on there. Arguably Kevin Smith's "best" film. And for my money it's all gold after that.
When he asked Ethan Supple if he wanted to come back for a second Mall Rats, Ethan sent Kevin Smith back a picture of a sailboat.
The rare "Like before I even watch". :-)
DO IT, DOUG! (Edit: Severely underrated fun fact: The shark's name is Bruce.)
In Captain Marvel, Stan Lee's Cameo is him with the Mallrats script rehearsing his lines. That made Kevin Smith cry as that made him a part of the MCU.
"who's your favorite new kid? call me joey." "jesus CHRIST man there's just some things you don't talk about in public!!" love this movie.
Kevin Smith's movies really connected with me, for a large part due to the fact that he displays a world I know, with references that are from my generation with a humour that is mine, even though I grew up in an entirely different country.
Stan Lee just always wanted to do Movies, so when he was asked through various contacts he went yes. It started a friendship between Kevin Smith and Stan Lee that lasted years, with Stan always asking when he would do another Cameo. The really fun part of the story is, when Stan saw the script his only concern was that he didn't want to give even in a work of fiction the idea that there was a 'One who got away' he was happily married to the great love of his life, so they added the extra scene where Stan reveals he was making it up. (Who even resembled the woman, that before didn't exist except in his head, he had been drawing for years long before he met her)
Suzanne plays a big role in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Kevin Smiths great work to totally poke fun at the entire movie/entertainment industry which has all the old characters from all his movies in addition to cameos by Will Ferrell, James VanDer Beek, Shannon Elizabeth, and Mark Hamill amongst many others
As a high schooler this movie on DVD was something a watched over and over. The first like 5 Kevin smith movies are all so great. 😊

Ethan Suplee who plays William Black (the guy looking at the 3D poster) went on to co-star as Jason Lee's brother Randy in the tv series My Name Is Earl.
Remember in Clark's when they went to the funeral? It was for this girl that they're talking about that and the brain and ambulism in the middle of a backstroke.
Excellent movie, classic 90’s, and another example of a movie that could never be made today.
In his final appearance in the MCU Stan Lee appears as himself learning the lines for this movie, in a train. Partly because it is approximately time appropriate, but mostly because by that point one of his lines from this film was one of the few things he could still remember.
The funeral that Randal and Dante go to in Clerks is the girl that died in the pool that there are talking about in the beginning of this movie
Lol, for some reason I'm always watching you at work. Thanks for curing my boredom, at least temporarily.
This movie takes place in the same time as Clerks, The girl who dies swimming is the same girl that had the funeral they went to on clerks. Lots of cross characters. more in Chasing Amy. Quints and Brodie, are named after two of the main characters in Jaws. Till this day I still say, "Tell em, Steve Dave!". TS's twin brother was the one in Dazed and confused who was dating Joey Adams' character. At the end Silent Bob is parodying Luke Skywalker in the Wampa cave reaching for the light saber. And when SB spoke at the end, he quoted Yoda. I learn alot from the trivia in IMDB. Yes you have to watch "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back".
Joe Lefors was a real lawman and featured in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Naming the head security guard "Lafours" is definitely a tip of the hat from Smith
-Smith tells the story of “Snoochie Boochies” in the 1st An Evening with Kevin Smith. Basically, Jason Mewes said something which evolved into something else which evolved into something else and became. “Snoochie Boochies.” -This story was not the original story. If you watch the scene where Julie is explaining what happened to the girl who was supposed to be there, it was reshot in a warehouse because of it being redone. -I loved how Captain Marvel used this movie for the Stan Lee cameo.
Forget whether it pays off later in the movie, but I noticed Brody shook Stan Lee's hand (after he had put it in his behind).
You missed the obvious "I love the smell of Commerce in the morning!" as per Apocalypse Now "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning!" by Killgore Robert Duvall's famous line. I was not aware of Kevin Smith prior to this movie I bought it because it was cheap DVD bargain bin. Now I am hooked and have all his films up to Jay & Silent bob Strike Back, I've seen Red State and Jay & Silent bob Reboot but on rental. Oh, and Clerks 2 on DVD also.
Going to the mall just to hang out was a big thing in the 80s and 90s.
Here's some things you might not have noticed 1. This film takes place the day before the events of Clerks making it a prequel 2. Julie Dwyer, the girl who died in the pool is the same girl Dante & Randal went to the funeral of (which you can see the animated version called The Lost Scene on the Blu-ray). 3. Tricia, the 15 year old sex student is the younger sister of Alyssa in Chasing Amy & the girl at the end of Clerks (the one who left with the asshole trainer) 4. As you saw Brian O'Halleran plays Gil Hicks, this is 2 out of 3 characters he plays in the franchise. 5. Joey Lauren Adams started dating Kevin Smith after this film and their break up of sorts was made into Chasing Amy, which he had her play the lead and her character of Gwen will later be mentioned to have had a connection with Alyssa from Chasing Amy 6. No this wasn't based on any comic books, the Producer was friends with Stan Lee and asked him to be in it (Lee's first cameo was in Trial of the Incredible Hulk). 7. The Superman dialogue is what got Smith the writing job for Superman Lives, an unmade Superman sequel based on Death of Superman 8. Susanne does return 9. Seth Green was brought in to audition for Jay as Universal wanted a more professional actor, but even Green said he'd rather have Jason Mewes back and botched his audition making sure Jay kept the role. This is the film owned by Universal so we'll likely never get a complete box set and Smith has wanted to do a sequel called Mallbrats. Some elements do return in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot after he failed to get the sequel made. There's a director's cut that is completely different and actually flows better in my opinion though this is still great.
The answer to the question "Where did Kevin Smith get his vocabulary from?" is comics books. He got his fantastic vocabularly from reading comic books.
I saw Mallrats for the first time in 97. It was my introduction to Kevin Smith. Then I watched Clerks and Chasing Amy came out shortly after that
Sadly, very few saw this in cinemas, as the studio declared it a flop and pulled it in a single weekend. It has always been a "guilty pleasure" of mine, though, and I'm glad Shanelle gave it a look.
I love when the ethan suplee says brenda when looking at rene... calling her name from 90210
I never even thought about how Earl and Randy Hickey are in this movie together. lol
I really hope you do Chasing Amy soon it's probably my favorite Kevin Smith film. I love Clerks but Chasing Amy is the film that made me fall in love with this man's work.
14:07 I don't know how young Shanelle is, but the joke about William calling Shannen Doherty "Brenda" is her character's name in Beverly Hills 90210.
Note about the View Askewniverse: Mallrats takes place the day before Clerks, then Chasing Amy takes place 2 years later (my Criterion edition of Chasing Amy comes with a handy guide including a timeline and a chart of who went to high school together). Note about Silent Bob speaking: there's a pattern in his dialogue, in that he gives good advice during odd-numbered View Askewniverse films, but not-so-useful advice in even-numbered films... I first saw the View Askewniverse films out-of order (Clerks, then Dogma, then Mallrats, then Chasing Amy, then Clerks II, then Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), so for me Mallrats didn't feel like a letdown the way it did for many people who saw his films in order (although it did seem a bit of a "filler" movie compared to weightier films like Dogma or Chasing Amy, which grappled with more substantial themes).
The Susanne story served as a bridge between this one and Chasing Amy if I remember correctly. It was in a comic put out by Oni Comics back in 1999.
As someone who grew up in the town next to Kevin smith, I can’t help but mention it.
In Wonder Woman, Stan Lee's cameo has him in a bus reading a script. If you look, you can see the script is for Mallrats, which the filming of took place at the time that movie is set.
When I was in animation school, learning lip sync, I used Brody's food court audio for my project.
Great reaction! I'm so happy you're reacting to Kevin Smith's movies!
" I hope his pants get caught and a blood bath ensues." You missed the best line of the film Shanelle!!!
Chasing Amy is his best work by far. The movie was ground breaking with its theme and characters.
That kid is back on the EsCAlaToR!!
Fun fact-The events of Mallrats take place one day before Clerks. The girl who died doing laps at the YMCA, was the same girl whose funeral Dante and Randall got tossed out of for knocking over the casket.

Smith managed to get Comic book legend to Cameo, which was probably his first Cameo. Eventually Stan has an MCU Cameo where he is reading a Mallrats script and practicing his lines. Chasing Amy, the next movie, is surprisingly good, although it was never that popular. Dogma is great especially if you're religious, with some Big names involved, who all took off after it.
Good news, Kevin Smith is trying to make Mallrats 2. He was supposed to start production in 2020. I think it's still supposed to happen after all of the promotion for Clerks 3 is done.
